Summary: Heartbreaker won't break JG's fans' hearts....
Review: Julie Garwood's first contemporary chiller is a must read for any Garwood fan. Like many, I was sceptical and wondered if I would like this "new" type of book.

It's wonderful. Ms. Garwood stays true to her writing style with real life hero and heroine characters, along with her always perfect secondary characters. The suspense and tension is believable and scary, but there's humor, too. Nick's reactions when Laurent agrees with him after he tries to explain to her that she couldn't possibly love him, that it's just the situation they're in is hilarious - "Of course you don't love me.....what do you mean, you don't love me?". Vintage Garwood bantering and I just put the book down and laughed.

I also know I'm not alone in falling for Father Tom and Noah Clayborne (yes, Clayborne) and am hoping (demanding?) that Noah get his own book as soon as possible.

It's been rumored that each of the so-called FBI "Apostles", Noah among them, will be getting their own books, but for now, one of Nick's brothers is the next to get his own book. Theo? Please, please let Noah be next.

Anyway, run, do not walk to your bookstore / internet site to get this book. You WON'T be disappointed.

Summary: GOOD PLOT BUT THE CHARACTERS NEED SOME WORK
Review: OVERALL I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. I THINK IF THERE WERE MORE TRUE CONNECTIONS WITH THE CHARACTERS I WOULD HAVE ENJOYED IT MORE. THE TWISTS AND TURNS IN THE STORY WAS WHAT KEPT ME READING.
ONE OF THE REVIEWERS GAVE THE ENDING AWAY, WHICH I THINK IS VERY UNFAIR TO THE READERS THAT CHECK OUT THE REVIEWS.
THERE ARE SOME GOOD AND BAD REVIEWS ON THIS BOOK BUT I THINK YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK AND FORM YOUR OWN OPINION.

Summary: HEARTBREAKER Breaks New Ground
Review: Julie Garwood is one of my top ten favorite authors. I have all of her books. When the publisher announced a new Julie Garwood novel, I couldn't wait for it to hit the shelves and was worried that I wouldn't like it because this one would be set in modern days, a very different setting than Ms. Garwood's previous historical novels.

Heartbreaker begins in the confessional on sweltering day. Tom Madden is the priest filling in for the regular priest and is just about to call it a day when he gets his one and only confession. It is a nut who promises to kill Tom's sister, Laurant, and who calls himself the Heartbreaker.
Heartbreaker challenges Tom to reveal the confession (a big no-no in the Catholic church, confessions are sacred). Heartbreaker knows all about Tom's and Laurant's life, their habits and friends, and predicts that Tom will call in his FBI friend, Nick Buchanan for help. Well, he wasn't wrong. Nick comes to the aid of his friend and becomes Laurant's bodyguard. The couple pretend to be in love to draw out the killer, and of course, they fall in love for real.

The book is predictable regarding the evolution of the romance between Laurant and Nick, but I can't complain. Laurant's stubbornness and vulnerability make her very attractive. Nick's old-fashioned sense of chivalry is charming, and I will admit to wishing there more of that kind of male protectiveness around today.

Nick's fear of flying gives a comic tilt to the story as does Laurant's neighbors, a pair of elderly sisters that stick their noses in where they do(n't) belong.

I wasn't disappointed and heaved a great sigh of relief when I finished the book. I take these books and their authors personally and would have felt betrayed if the book was a bomb. Thank goodness it was good!

I had the absolute wrong guy as the Heartbreaker and was thrilled to find out I was wrong. I hate too much predictability.

Summary: Stark Raving Mad
Review: You're a romance writer, but you want to do a "genre shift," kind of like going from baseball to football. What do you do? You write a romance and then plop down right on top of the romance "a crazy person," a control freak who is strong and intelligent but more than a little sick: his name is Stark, but he's masquerading as Justin Brady, a simpleton. No matter, he can't fool Mr. Hero, that is, Nick the FBI Guy. Nick is all-around alpha-male what-every-woman wants, so how can he lose? You see the problem here? We all know what's going to happen: Down goes Stark, up goes Nick, he gets the girl (whoops, woman) in the end. Ever heard that one before?

On the good side, the book will keep you occupied and the paperback copy has a nice type font with space between the lines, making it easy to read. Lots of conversation. But way too much "kitchen and bedroom" talk, for me, but for romance lovers, of course not.

Jules Wesson is the only character who doesn't follow a formula: Jules, the unliked FBI Guy in Charge ("jerk"), does a good deed at the end and never gets his comeuppance, at least not in this book.

Which brings to mind another problem: Where did Stark come from? Obviously, he has a past history, but it's only alluded to in this book and never really explained. Something about Nick shooting Stark's wife, who was trying to kidnap a child? Wow! There must be a prequel, but the book cover never mentioned it.

Well, you don't absolutely need the prequel, but I still say Stark was a little too crazy to be believable. But, as a good writer should, Garwood offers something for everybody: Noah's cool. Diximus.

Summary: Great Thriller
Review: Now everyone has their favorite author, one of mine is Julie Garwood. I have enjoyed her historical romances immensely and now she has switched to more contemporary fare. Father Madden, while taking confession, receives a horrible message from a madman. He tells Father Madden he is a killer and he has already chosen his next victim, Father Madden's sister, Laurant. Father Madden telephones the only person he knows who can help protect his sister, one of his best friends, FBI agent, Nick Buchanan. Nick Buchanan meets Laurant and while trying to protect her, and stay one step ahead of the killer, finds himself very attracted to her. This is your typical "hunted heroine" novel, with the hunky FBI agent keeping the heroine safe while they are on the run, and a demented killer stalking their every move. Still, the story flows, the characters connect, and I loved the story. I would highly recommend.
