Rating: Summary: Absolute Page Turner! Review: I used to be the type of person who gagged at the thought of having to pick up a book and read it. I began reading Patricia Cornwell and thought she was the best author ever. WRONG! Ever since I discovered Tami Hoag there hasn't been one time since I haven't had one of her books at my side. Cry Wolf was my favorite of all that I've read, by far! I began reading this book Saturday morning and found that I couldn't put it down. I had the entire thing finished by the next afternoon. I absolutely fell in love with one of the book's main characters, Jack. Most of the books I have read of Ms. Hoag's put more emphasis on the crimes but this one concentrates more on the love affair. It was a nice change. The characters, scenery, and background are so well described that I actually had to remind myself that it wasn't real. Ms. Hoag does such a good job of describing the characters emotions that throughout the novel I felt the same way they did. By the time I finished this book I wanted to pack up, move to Cajun Country and meet me a tall, dark, and handsome stranger with a sordid past. I gaurantee this novel will leave a similar impression on anyone who reads it!
Rating: Summary: Terrific- but same storyline Review: I just finished this book yesterday and it was very good. I couldn't put it down in the end (but i had a good idea of who the killer was when they first brought him into the picture, but I kept wondering if it was him or not. I love mysteries, and this definetly had a twist on it with who the killer was. I recommend AShes to Ashes to anyone who wants to read Tami Hoag, but read that one later on, because that one really surprised me with the killer!!!
Rating: Summary: More romance... Review: Normally love TH books... do not like same ole' romance in any shape or form. Too much sex and not enough about the murders... This book should have been called "sex on the bayou". Just finished the book so I could confirm my suspicions on the murderer....
Rating: Summary: a book with 2 personalities Review: This book, CRY WOLF, was a pretty good book, other then the fact that it was mostly a romance novel. During the beginning of this book, it concentrates on the growing relationship between Laurel and Jack... It wasn't until about halfway through where the book actually got serious about the Bayou Strangler. Before the death of a bartender in the area, the strangler is really just an afterthought if that. If Tami Hoag had interwoven more about the Bayou Strangler in the beginning, which was supossed to be the main theme of the book, then I could have rated it a full 5 stars... Stick with the theme!
Rating: Summary: A Romance Novel by Any Other Name. . . . Review: . . .still reads as corny. I picked up this book and read about unsolved strangling cases in Louisiana and the woman who wants to solve them. It sounded fascinating, Patricia Cornwell-esque. Silly me. Turns out this is a romance novel wearing a mystery novel's jacket. Fluff in sheep's clothing, if you will. Much of the emphasis is placed upon the relationship with Jack and Laurel and all of that. The murders seem to be placed into the book almost as an afterthought, to keep it as being classified as a "romance." And they did a darn good job, too. If you read the back cover of this book, there isn't a *single word* mentioned about Laurel falling in love with a "mysterious man-with-dark-past" sort of thing that the romance genre is famous for. I was very irritated with the if not false, then completely misleading synopsis on the back of the novel. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that a fan of the romance genre would absolutely love this book. I'm not a fan of the romance genre. I kept reading it, hoping it would get better, hoping that it *wasn't* going to be what I suspected it was, (plus I'd just spent a good six dollars of my precious cash for it), but it was. Just another trite romance novel. Oh well.
Rating: Summary: A great hero and heroine Review: I really loved this book, I,ve read Tami Hoag's books before, but this one is for sure my favorite. Here is a little about it.A killer is stalking the bayous of Louisiana, savegly raping and killing young woman, and leaving no clues behind Laurel Chandler came back to her hometown in Lousiana to relax after a case that cost her almost everything. Her job, her marriage, her sanity. She expected to find peace, but instead found the little town in the grip of fear. A killer stalking and everyone is terrified. And she certainly didn't expect to fall in love. Jack Boudreax is a man tormented by his past, his job, his wife's suicide. He now spends his time drinking, trying to drown his troubles. But more trouble finds him when Laurel Chandler walkes into a bar where he is playing, and tells him his dog has ruined her garden and he needed to pay her. He doesn't want to fall in love, doens't want to hurt anyone or let himself be hurt again, but is drawn to Laurel like a fish to water. And when the killer strikes too close to home, who will be next.
Rating: Summary: no stars really Review: This was the first book I read of Tami Hoag, and it is also the last. I thought I bought a suspence book, that is how it was presented (yes, I did read somewhere that it was originally written as romance novel - it should have been marketed as such) but what it ended up being is a romance novel with a laughable "suspence" plot. Very predictable, she even gave away the identity of the murderer with a really weak metaphore. I did finish reading it only because I kept hoping it would get better and because I hoped that the murderer was somebody other than who I knew it was from almost the beginning. I guess if you are into romance novels you may enjoy it, I absolutely do not like romance novels. There are so many great suspense books out there, this is not one of them, don't bother...
Rating: Summary: Kept me guessing till the end... Review: During the course of the book, I changed my mind about six times about who I thought was the killer -- and each time I had very well thought out reasons (so I THOUGHT) for believing my latest theory. And at the end, I was STILL fooled. I loved the bayou atmosphere: It's just dripping with sensuality, heat and mystery. Laurel and Jack were both cool although I wanted to knock their heads together after awhile. Tami Hoag's roots in the romance genre still clearly show and she can't resist that endless attraction/ resistance/ attraction back and forth thing that can get tedious eventually. It would be refreshing to have her write about a couple who like each other right off the bat and join forces immediately. However, this book's super!
Rating: Summary: cry wolf Review: This was without a doubt one of the best books I've read in a long time. The heroine and the hero have all the elements to make a good book great. The tension not only between the two, but, also, between the heroine and her family is right at the edge and Ms. Hoag makes you feel everything she feels. It took me a long time to figure out who was the killer in this book and even when I did, I didn't want to believe it. If you enjoy this genre, this is the book to read!
Rating: Summary: Worth Reading for the Atmosphere Alone Review: Tami Hoag deserves an A+ for her wonderful evocation of the Louisiana swampland in this thriller. The town, people, and the spooky swamp itself have all stayed in my mind weeks after I finished the novel. Another great feature of the work is its sexy Cajun hero, Jack. Most of the time, he's a real charmer. This said, Cry Wolf has one serious failing in my view: it places far too much attention on what proves to be a tedious romance. From the beginning, it's obvious who will get involved with whom. The novel is seriously marred by these characters' long monologues and incessant conversations about "why we shouldn't be romantically involved," even though it's crystal clear that the romantic relationship is good for both partners. Jack's puerile moments of insecurity are particularly irritating - they don't fit his character. He is very appealing in his confidence, but exceedingly dull in his moments of insecurity. I would have appreciated it if the leading couple had tormented each other less and enjoyed each other more - especially since the steamy love scenes are quite well-written. As a thriller, the novel is OK. It's rather obvious whodunit, but the killer's motives are not immediately apparent. Overall, Cry Wolf offers a good read, but it is NOT for those who can't stomach sappy romances full of pointless game-playing.
