Summary: There is a Plot...
Review: As a Tami Hoag fan, I found this book to have a slow start. The storyline tempts the reader and lays ideas that "something" has happened to both of the main characters, Jack and Laurel; however, it is slow at revealing what the "something" is. Unlike Hoag's other books which starts off with a murder mystery, the first half of the book delves into a the love story part of the plot. Because I enjoy Hoag for the Who-Dunnit stories, I felt that the first half dragged on. Not a bad read, but does not measure up to my favorite, A Thin Dark Line. Both Cry Wolf and A Thin Dark Line take place in South Louisiana, a place that is near and dear to my heart.

Summary: Big bad wolf in the swamps of Louisiana
Review: Laurel Chandler is a disturbed prosecutor coming home from Georgia for some R&R after her own "cry wolf" incident. She needs some emotional healing, but gets caught up in a serial killer drama instead. The killer is playing games with her, singling her out by slipping her trophies from the dead girls found in the swamp. This book is rich with descriptions of the Louisiana scenary, the Cajun people, and many interesting suspects. Ms Hoag goes to great lengths to build the story with gripping background material on a number of shady characters. I thoroughly enjoyed trying out my own theories as to which one could have the motive and opportunity to commit the murders. Near the end, the killer reveals him/herself to our heroine in a cutesy fashion, further adding to the drama. Read it. You'll love it.

Summary: Disappointing!
Review: Cry Wolf is the mediocre result you get when an author tries to go back and convert an earlier effort which was in the "romance" genre --the genre in which Tami Hoag started writing -- into a thriller -- the genre in which Hoag has achieved her fame. Until Cry Wolf, I have been a big fan of Tami Hoag, enjoying thrillers such as Night Sins, Guilty As Sin, etc. very much. Cry Wolf, however, is mostly a soap opera. The mystery/suspense doesn't even begin to come into play until about 1/2 way into this 529 page paperback. Since I am an avid reader of thrillers, I was somewhat disappointed that, despite the fact that a number of murders did happen, the suspense was unsatisfying for me. I kept hoping that as I read on the suspense would build; but, it did not. Bottom line is if you're a "romance" reader who likes some mystery/suspense, this is a book you'll enjoy (and probably a lot). However, this book will probably disappoint you, as it did me, if you are a thriller lover looking for an exciting "read."

Review: First - if you are a Tami Hoag fan, be sure to read this book BEFORE reading "A Thin Dark Line" - she reveals both who the killer is and who his victims were. This was a really great suspense novel, definately my favorite of all Ms.Hoag's books. The characters were extremely colorful, the killer a big surprise, and the last 20 pages are virtually impossible to put down. The only thing that keeps me from rating it a 10 is the fact that Ms.Hoag still seems to be sticking to the same formula she uses in all of her novels: heroine meets a tortured bad boy who turns out to be a softie underneath, she acts like she can't stand him or trust him, he the same, they hate each other,they love each other, he saves her from peril and doom, they live happily ever after. If she could have toned down the predictable (and somewhat "gag-me") romance storyline, this book would have been perfect. All in all, if you can take the drippy romance with a grain of salt, this is one terrific read you won't want to miss.

Summary: Not Exactly Southern Hospitality
Review: Prosecutor Laurel Chandler has suffered a nervous breakdown after losing a case where children were being abused. The loss makes things worse in that Laurel is convinced of the abuse and the fact that the perpetrators have gone free have just made her completely sick. She heads to her paternal Aunt's home in Bayou Breaux, Louisiana to heal. Despite Laurel's desire to simply do nothing, she's pretty quickly drawn in by some of the town's characters. In addition a serial killer is hunting woman in the nearby towns and killing them. Tami Hoag has created a fascinating story and excellent characters. As a reader, I was completely taken by the richness of the character development and the authentic feel of a small town in Louisiana. Obviously Laurel rises to the occasion and starts investigating the serial killings. Yet, this isn't simply a fascinating mystery. It's also the story of odd but engaging characters that kept me wanting to read more. I just couldn't wait to find out what was up next. One of Hoag's best.

Summary: Too Much Romance
Review: This book does not live up to Tami Hoag's standards. I thought it was a new book but it is written like a romance and hyped as a mystery. It is full of goopy hate-love senarios that are soooooo boring. I bought the audio book which was quite expensive and I am very sorry.
