Summary: True Devotion
Review: I really enjoyed this book, though some of my friends found it harder to get into. I think they were expecting more along the lines of the "O'Malley" series. (An excellent Dee Henderson series, I might add) I had no trouble staying focused on it and am looking forward to her next Uncommon Hero Book 2.

Summary: Great Story
Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was plenty of action, romance, faith. Dee did a wonderful job with this story. In fact, I've read all of her books to date, and they are great.

Summary: Riveting from page one
Review: I recently discovered Dee Henderson in this novel, and what a discovery! The book opens with a woman (Kelly) floating in the ocean, wondering if she will become a victim like her husband, wondering if the new man in her life (Joe), a SEAL, will rescue her. Flashbacks intertwine with the scene, as the author takes her time entering into the commencement of the story itself. Kelly is falling for Joe, but isn't sure if she has the strength to marry another SEAL. Joe's intensely in love with her, but knows her concerns. Meanwhile the man responsible for her husband's death (Raider) is out to finish off Joe's platoon, putting Joe's life in grave danger. Joe and Kelly struggle to make a decision concerning their relationship in the midst of constant distractions. In the end, Kelly herself is kidnapped by the feared Raider and thought to be dead. This event alone changes Joe's life forever. A must-read book, the best I've seen in a while. Henderson's an amazing writer, and knows what she's talking about. Looking forward impatiently for Book Two!

Summary: A fine read from Dee Henderson
Review: I usually steer clear of contemporary romance novels like the plague, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I picked up True Devotion. Dee Henderson knows what makes a story riveting and what appeals to readers. I loved Joe and Kelly's story. The book is interesting, funny, and focuses on two very believable characters. The insights into the world of the Navy SEALS were fascinating. Henderson has a great book that will captivate readers from the start. I cannot wait until the sequel arrives!

Summary: True perfection!
Review: Once I pick up a book by Dee Henderson, it does not take me long to finish it and this was no exception. This is the first in the Uncommon Heroes series and it is superb. The end of the book came too soon. I wanted it to go on to see what became of the characters, who are all very believable. It is an action packed book full of intrigue and excitement with a special blend of romance. A very well written book. The only down side is I have to wait quite a while for the second in the series to become available! Thanks Dee! Keep 'em coming!

Summary: Not my Cup of Tea...
Review: Part of this I guess is my fault, I picked this book up thinking, ok, its a love story between a Navy SEAL and a SEAL widow and some political intrigue. That was the case, but it also says on the spine (which I did not notice) that is labeled as a 'Inspirational Romance', which means, it is a Contemporary Christian Romance. Not my cup of tea...I don't mean that in any bad way or anything, so don't get me wrong, but I like to keep my religion and my romance reading seperate. The way the male lead of a gorgeous Navy SEAL Joe didn't go over with me as going to church every Sunday and the female lead Kelly reading the Bible in bed every night. Not to say the book was bad or not well written. I thought it could've been an interesting plot considering all the work the author put into the research on SEALS and the Navy. The plot fell flat simply because it focused too much on Kelly's insecurities and her incapability to be alone.
I understand she was lonely and loved her husband who died, but the plot was clouded by it so much that I was irritated. Joe was a well thought out character and was wasted in this story in my opinion. The 'villian' was not believeable to me and I actually liked him, lol. You're not supposed to like the villian, but here we can't help but like him. Didn't leave much for me to anticipate. All in all, the constant whining and clinginess of the heroine bugged me to no end and Joe deserved better. The 'bad guy' was too nice. Too much religious overtones. Not enough romance. I gave 3 stars for the in depth look into SEALs lives and work and was astonished. The research was excellent and I applaud Ms. Henderson. Well done...

~Lifeguard Kelly Jacobs was about to drown in the cold waters off the coast clinging to a drowning boy. How were the Coast Guard going to see her? It was dark and a storm was coming in fast. Riptides were all around her. Time was running out...until she remembered Nay SEAL Joe Baker. Her best friend now after her Navy SEAL husband's untimely death 3 years past. He would come find her, he had to. She trusted him, she needed him, if only she could last for a little longer...

Navy SEAL Lt. Joe "Bear" Baker saved Kelly from the freezing and raging tide in the nick of time. He wasn't going to let her die, not Kelly. He had lost his best friend 3 years before and he would not let his widow...the woman he found himself in love with die that night. He knew Kelly would not feel the same, she had already paid the ultimate price of being a SEAL wife. He didn't want to hurt her anymore than she was. But when he saw her hope and spirit sinking lower and lower as time passed, he knew he had to save her, not just from the water, but from dispair. Love...love will save her and him.

The only problem...the very man who killed Kelly's husband is back and so close she can touch him. They're both about to find that trust and love in God and country will be their only hope.

I feel I must make it clear to anyone looking into buying this book that if you are looking for a sweet and very chaste romance with no real violence or offending dialog, this is it. It is a very 'PG' rated romance; it is also the first book in a series called 'Uncommon Heroes'...

Summary: Not for me
Review: The book grabbed my attention at the beginning and I couldn't put the book down for a few chapters. It was exciting, believable, and definitely the kind of book you could reread many times. After that though...

The main problems were with the villain, the predictability of the plot, and the hero and heroine together.

The villain was very, very likeable. He was nice, kind, good to his (likeable) teenage son, mannerly, generous... Of course he *had* been selling nuclear weapons of course but he *had* tried to stop, then been blackmailed... He was simply too likeable and, from the moment he appeared on the scene, I knew he was the villain and I was sad about it. (Oh, and he wasn't really responsible for what's-is-face's death either)

The plot was actually fine-just VERY predictable. Good writing yes, excitement sometimes, shock, surprise, and wonder---no.

And the 3rd problem: the heroine and hero. Apart, I could deal with them. Joe was a little too perfect and macho for my taste, but still, he was a decent guy (aside from one thing at the end of the book which made me cry jerk! jerk!) Kelly was nice--was not perfect--but she was a little weak and rather emotional at times. I like to be able to like or admire the heroine and hero, but in True Devotion I simply tolerated them and wished that somehow Kelly and the villain...

Summary: Move Over Brockman
Review: There is just something about a man in uniform which has romance readers' hearts all a tweeter especially if the uniform is that of a Navy SEAL. One need only look at the highly successful SEAL books by Suzanne Brockman to know what branch of the military service is the reader's favorite. Well move over Susanne Brockman, there is a new kid on the block who has created a truly stunning tale of love and devotion to God, Country and to those left behind when the missions are done. TRUE DEVOTION is the remarkably poignant story of a Navy SEAL widow and the man whose love for her is tied to her husband's death. Multnomah author, Dee Henderson, who has captivated romantic suspense readers with DANGER IN THE SHADOWS and THE NEGOGIATOR, has crafted a tale of love and devotion sure to fascinate the most cynical reader.

Navy widow and lifeguard, Kelly Jacobs has found herself in tight spots before but nothing like this. Relying on survival skills her deceased husband taught her may not be enough to save her and the young surfer as they are caught in a rip tide being drawn out to sea. As the biting cold of the water is taking its toll and darkness sets in Kelly races to keep her young charge alive and her strength up but her spirit takes the biggest toll. With the knowledge Navy SEALs take care of their own including widows, her only hope is they will be found soon by the Navy or Coast Guard. Yet, as the tide pushes them further away from the few lights still visible from the base, her thoughts drift to her husband's best friend, Navy SEAL Lt. Joe "Bear" Baker. As her faith and spirit are tested to the limit it seems she has some unfinished business about her husband's death and her growing feelings for "Bear" Baker. Will he find her in time to explore them or is it her time to join her husband?

In TRUE DEVOTION, Ms. Henderson has provided readers with a uniquely plotted story using the "second chance at love" theme; a theme sadly lacking in today's romance offerings. The fact Dee Henderson does it with a crisp professional voice makes TRUE DEVOTION a must read even if you have never read an Inspirational book. Readers are sure to become loyal fans of Ms Henderson's work after reading the first chapter of Kelly's intense personal introspection: truly incredible writing sure to make the reader's heart ache at the intensity of her feelings. Have the tissues ready!. Her impressive knowledge of the workings of Navy SEALS never takes over the story but then she never lets the spirituality of her books become preachy either. This is what makes a Dee Henderson novel something very special. If you are a fan of Navy SEAL stories, you must read TRUE DEVOTION, a story with depth and emotion far surpassing the best of Suzanne Brockman's Navy SEALs. Dee Henderson is truly one of Romance's rising stars.
