Rating: Summary: My first novel! Review: This was the first large novel I ever read and I really, really enjoyed it. Ever since I have been turned onto reading because of it. The writing isn't complex but very descriptive. The plot absolutely rocks! Its not as scary as some people say, at least it wasnt for me but for creepiness its a great read and highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Exciting, but too dark for a Christian Novel! Review: I enjoyed reading this book quite a bit, but it reminded me too much of the enjoyment I used to feel reading Clive Barker, Stephen King, and Dean Koontz. I felt like I was sinning by reading it. I don't like being attracted to darkness, but I enjoyed Peretti's first two books, and the Prophet so much, that I thought I'd give it a try. It is not for the reader seeking only purity and light. All that said, it was a good read, and very hard to put down. It showed that faith in God will help you with your sin problem, but I agree with some of the other reviews written here, that the Gospel wasn't really presented, and I felt that it should have been. Lighten up a bit Mr Peretti. You are obviously very gifted, and I can see your childhood fascination with monsters evident in your work. I was the same way as a child, but I want to remember Phil 4:8 (KJV) "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
Rating: Summary: Adrenaline pumping, heart racing, sheer terror........ Review: Adrenaline pumping, heart racing, sheer terror............ Does this sound like a Stephen King novel to you? It should but it isn't. This is a 550 page novel by Frank Peretti without all the cussing that is contained in a Stephen King novel. "The Oath" was a wonderfully chilling book, that kept me hooked, wondering what was going to happen on the next page. To start out the book, there is a bizarre murder that has taken place, and Steve Benson, the victim's brother, will stop at nothing in trying to find out who (or what) killed his brother, Cliff. The oath, is the secret that the people of Hyde River Valley have had for over 100 years. Steve has to discover through years of legends what this oath is to find out the mystery to his brother's death, as well as the deaths of four other people since he has arrived in town. He goes on the search with deputy Tracy Ellis, and along the way, they discover truths that are too frightening to hear, but also too frightening not to do anything about them. Along the way, they meet Levi Cobb who has a journal of hundreds of entries testifying to the oath that everyone is trying to keep--BUT, no one ever listens to Levi, and Steve and Tracy doubt whether they should, either. I cannot reveal any more without giving away the secret of The Oath, but I think you will find it breath-taking and fear-invoking. I was thrilled when I went to the local Christian bookstore, and found this novel. It is every bit as good as one of Mr. King's novels (along the line of "IT"), but without the dirty language and innuendos. I highly recommend this book, and hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Hope you enjoy. Melissa J. Mills rynomel@aol.com
Rating: Summary: Chris Review: I LOVED This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti so I was so eager to read this book. I was very disappointed by the slowness of the story line. While, I enjoyed the ending, It was not worth the 4 times I had to check it out of the library to finish reading it. It took 350+ pages to get going. I don't recommend this book, I am sorry to report.
Rating: Summary: One of Peretti's best! Review: This is one of Frank Peretti's best novel: full of mystery, thrils and horror. A brother of a nature photographer, killed by what the police say was an animal attack, comes to an old mining town to find he truth. He finds everyone even more cold and mysterious than the death of his brother. Soon he finds an older, deeper secret, a horror in the form of a beast which is tied to the citizens of the town. Awesome read.

Rating: Summary: Sin and the serpent : an amazing book! Review: I loved this book and I consider myself to be a picky reader. The symbolism was perfect. The charactors were very believable. I was immediately drawn in and it kept me turning the pages all the way through. After reading it I'm left with a lesson that stays with me. Sin must never be ignored. When I try to rationalize my sinful behavior, I'll remember the figurative black tar oozing from my heart and the dragon who is constantly crouching at my door, inhaling the stench my sin gives out and licking his chops. Way to go Frank!
Rating: Summary: good read, though slightly disappointing Review: I first read "This Present Darkness" about 10 or 12 years ago, and absolutely loved it. But I didn't follow up w/any of Peretti's other books until a few years ago, when I read "The Prophet" and also enjoyed it. So, recently I picked up a copy of "The Oath", and was a little disappointed. The novel starts off really well, and the story develops nicely. The characters were interesting, the plot well done and the writing smooth.
The book is rather long (548 pages)--but that's not a problem. What I didn't like is that after reading through a book that size, the ending was just way too simplistic. The whole point behind the final climax was that we need to accept Christ into our hearts in order to defeat sin. But the main character's "faith" was never solid, never embraced. Throughout the entire "final battle" he was wandering around with the attitude of "MAYBE there is a God, and MAYBE He'll help me defeat this monster, so I'll just say a quick prayer and hope because it can't hurt anything."
It was rather a letdown to see an inspiring author like Peretti treat faith (and the affects of faith) so indifferently, so simplistically and so superficially. Sin isn't rebuked or defeated by the mere mention of God--it is defeated through true faith and a love of God in one's heart.
Rating: Summary: The end drags on too long when the suspense is long gone. Review: It took a long time for me to "get in the book" and I'm not sure that ever really happened. I kept waiting for a twist of some kind... which never came :(
Peretti is an awesome author, but if you really want good christian reading, check out his "This present darkness/Piercing the darkness" novels instead. Prophet is great as well, though in a different style.
I just was expecting something more exiting/interesting from Peretti than this book.
Rating: Summary: The Oath !READ! Review: This is truely the best book I have ever read. Words can't express how much I enjoyed this book. THis is the sort of book that you can't put down want to read all in one day kinda novel. This is not just a book for adults but it makes a great teen book for boys and girls (im 14). I would not recomend it to children under 13 because or the nature of the book and some words might be harder for younger children to understand. but that is up to the parents. Frank Peretti is a christian author who writes scary/thriller/horror novles. For all those christians out there this book is not evil like it sounds or the as cover presents. It is all based on Godly morals and you will find out as you read this book what I am talking about. So, good luck! Enjoy your book.
