Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I realy liked the book. I thought it was a little unrealistic at times, but it was mostly entertaining and it kept me interested. It also gave me a different perspective on what the law inforcement would be like in the future. Yes, I do agree it's not Clancy's best and he could of put a little more in to the plot of the story, but it is a good story overall.
Rating: Summary: typical of an author who has past his peak Review: Why Tom? All the books such as Sum of all Fears, Clear & Present Danger etc. - fantastic, 5 stars! These Net Force books - very poor. Tom you are not a romantic novelist so don't try to be one. I just read 400 pages of romantic, nice drivel - i buy Jackie Collins for that! Also this futuristic nonsense is at best interesting and i would say boring. Where's the action? Where's the thrill? Where's the suspense? Clint Eastwood was an A1 actor and all his western films & Dirty Harry films were A1. Then he had to get all 'arty' on us and try to do what he is not best at (directing) and the films he stars in are just OK - not great. Tom Clancy is following in these steps with Net Force and to a degree Op-Centre. Artists should stick to what they are good at and not kid the public into buying lesser grade novels just because of the writers name. I have read all Clancy's books but this is the last one unless he goes back to writing what he is good at,
Rating: Summary: Good. But not great. Review: Net Force is good. A little unrealistic but good. In NF: Hidden Agendas Alex Michaels and Antonella Fiorella "get it on" GET NF:HD!
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: This is the first book of this kind (computer centered suspense) that I've read and I'm hooked! The only way it could have been better is if it had been more realistic, maybe using more actually existing technology. I was completely engrossed in this book and am on pins and needles to read more like it. If any of you other computer-action readers know of any, PLEASE email me and let me know!
Rating: Summary: Where's the research? Review: I too am disappointed in the obvious lack of research into future technology. It's like the authors picked up on the concepts of abstractions and avatars to make relating to others and data easier, and then took it so far that it became cartoonish. Watching the packets cruise on by? What the heck? If we were to believe that all these metaphors were necessary, where is the background on what the relationship is? All I get is that a truck could be a slow packet (??) or a dude who chose to drive a big truck? This falls far short of what Gibson or Daniel Keyes Moran can portray, or even the book and movie "Disclosure". Further, have the authors never heard of Moore's Law? When writing a novel set twelve years in the future, one should look at the pace things are changing at. This aids in projection. There's mention of "the new 900MHz processors". Well, processor speed will likely double four times between now and 2010. If we're at 600 MHz now, that would be 9.6 GHz by 2010. How come William Gibson in the 80s is able to overcome the limitations of silicon in his novels and suggest organics as the next generation of computing tech, but Net Force doesn't mention holographic-based processors, or organics? The Web has profoundly changed media and people's lives in the past few years. Why does this novel not speculate on how society itself is different in the future due to the ubiquitous nature of this tech, the ready access to information?
Rating: Summary: Interesting with a plesant ending but too unrealistic!!!!!! Review: I read many novels by Tom Clancy, (MY favorite Clear and Present danger, Cardinal of the Kremlin) by now I know Tom Clancy style of writing, and after reading Netforce I really wonder if Tom Clancy wrote this novel or if his name has just been placed on the cover of the novel to boost it's sales. Well back to the Novel, the book starts of with an exceptionally intriguing plot that develops nicely with the assasination of NetForce director Steve Day. (Classical Tom Clancy writing catches your interest from the first page) The story develops well, but then midway through the novel, the story rapidly loses it realism. The mere idea of a global web where one person can go on with a VR Gear and meet someone else on the other side of the planet and interact with them (a man can such as talk, walk, and even have sex with a women)is more far fetched, even for the year this is happening, 2010. (2) I understand that the Mafia can hold a grudge on Steve Day for his previous involvements in organized crime. However how will 3 Conspiring Russian officials no that. (3) The "selkie" the world's best assasin for higher, skilled in the art of disguise, trickery and execution, however and I dont mean to sound sexist but I believe to make the story more believable "She" should not have been a "she", better yet a "He". The fact that she need this one more job to retire is "fake" because if she have been saving up enough money to her goal of 10 million and she is a couple of millions short, she could work out something with what she has i would believe. (4) last but not least was how NetForce linked the murder of Steve Day, the unfortunate mishaps that happen throughout the whole world, Murder of Mobster Genaloni's enforcer Sampson to one man Vladimir Plekhanov throug this virtual internet is beyond far fetched it's just impossible, and worst they successfully find where his is and basically kidnap him for the Chechnya ( i believe near Russia) in the middle of the night without making any noise with the helicopter they used to land there and retrieve him, in real life that man would have heard when the helicopter came around his cabin. Vladimir Plekhanov i believe is too clever to fall for it. However despite it faults im very openminded and i ended up enjoying the book till the end. I loved reading the technical stuff like the Ground assault missions or the missions of the Selkie, However i think the Mafia should have played a bigger role in the Novel maybe them trying to assasinate Alex Micheals in a diffrent way to make it the novel more exciting. Otherwise a good novel but really not my cup of tea. I prefer the way Tom Clancy used to wrie when he wrote the Jack ryan series which i miss so much.
Rating: Summary: GREAT!! Review: I am wondering what everyone was expecting by reading a book that was set in 2010. Many of you have decided the book was not realistic enough, but there is absolutely no way of knowing what the future will be. Does the term "fiction" not mean anything to any of you anymore? Can't we still read a good book to escape the real world for a while? Does it all have to be true to life now? If so, what is the good of reading, when we can walk outside and watch a murder? The book was a wonderful book, and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone. It is fast-paced, and full of descriptions of every detail.
Rating: Summary: A Gotta Read Type of Book Review: I don't know what the hell all those other guy's problem is, but this book is unbeleivably intersting and not wordy and not not wordy. it's right smack in the middle.Perfect. You should read this book no matter what anyone says!!!!
Rating: Summary: Lot's of Bullets and Intrigue, but too short on Tech Review: It was an enjoyable and entertaining book. Plot and character development were done reasonable well. The ending was a bit anti-climactic. My only real disappointment with the book was it's approach to the Internet and technology in the future. The cell phones on steriods were cool, but the VR internet link wasn't realistic, even by future standards. VR will happen, and even you're front end might be a highway or forest trail, But you wouldn't see a "slow moving data packet", you don't see one today, what makes you think you'll want to see trillions of them in the future (the net will be "that" much more busy). And you won't see someone (by chance), waiting at a VR gas station. The whole tech angle of the future took a back seat to making it easy to write the action sequences. The teens were thrown in to appeal to that element. Enough said about that. So, it's a good read. Just not for the net angle. Kind of sorry when you consider the name is "Netforce". Still worth the read. Took me a couple of days. So, enjoy!
Rating: Summary: ah Tom Clancy is great but this one is a dud Review: Let's just first say this is a nicely written book -- in the traditional Tom Clancy style, fast, gripping, action-based. the action scenes are especially done nicely. however, the whole premise of the story was just so incredibly unbelievable that i was not suspended as i normally am with all tom clancy fiction novels. come on, some of that VR stuff was just so far-fetched and to be honest, lame. oh ya, and that teenage slang, just plain stupid. still don't let this spoil your view of tom clancy -- just a mild misstep, i'm sure his next will be great
