Rating: Summary: A very good story Review: The book was very easy to read and it had a great story line -- too bad the title was the only thing left after Hollywood buthchered it. I could have enjoyed a little more accurate flick. Oh well, good book.
Rating: Summary: Ouch, what the heck was that? Review: As a loyal Clancy reader I was very disappointed with Net Force. The characters were shallow, the scenes were bare and the plot (what I could find of one) was predictable and transparent. The "Techno" parts were devoid of insight and realism. The "Thriller" parts were all found on a couple of pages describing very brief and predictable fight scenes. Clancy was one of my favorite authors because he could use the Hitchcock school of suspense combined with vivid characters to tell a griping story. In the past it was had to put down a Clancy work. Net Force was hard to pick up - it became work to finish it. Just like one of those bad "B" movies you hope will get better - and doesn't, Net Force leaves you wondering "what the heck was that?" Mr. Clancy, please take the time to do the writing yourself. If you do, I'll read everything you publish. Until then, it's back to the notable writers producing the notable works.
Rating: Summary: Espionage in the 21st Century Review: This novel was interesting and exciting. Up-to-date technologies are revealed. This advenure novel was much better than Clancy's Op-Centers series. Surfing the web with twisted villians is all to real in todays age.
Rating: Summary: Net Force get's you pumping.... Review: I have not read Tom Clancy's work for quite some time now but when I saw this book I bought it because it's about the net and the terrorism that could happen in the not so distant future over the net. I think the story is great and it kept me on the edge of my sit and it's a book I enjoyed reading on the way to work riding the subway. The characters were in my belief well developed.
Rating: Summary: A good book but not a Clancy Classic Review: When people think about Tom Clancy certain images come to mind: Detail, Detail, Detail. The saga of Jack Ryan is chalked full of detail. But alot of what he wrote about in those books were tied so close to reality that the "wiggle room" was non-exsistant. Net Force was a creative stab at what the Intelligance Orgs of our country will/could be like in 11 years. Clearly the world is changing and Clancy is wondering what the face of the Techno-Thriller will be like. Apparently he has not read the works by Gibson. I will say that his vision of the 'net is alot more believable than the cyber-punk pulp that is around...
Rating: Summary: weak plot, weak view of the future, predictable events Review: Interesting, but thin. Clancy's views on VR are a little unrealistic for my tastes (real hackers will always use a command line, IMHO :-)), but are entertaining nonetheless. The plot is a little bit of a stretch... In particular, there's no real motivation or reason for some of what happens. For example, why would a mafia boss order a hit on a Net Force commander, just because the FBI has been giving him grief?. Beyond the lack of realism, it's also worth noting that much of the outcome is predictable -- especially the martial arts battle that pits a member of Net Force against "the Selkie", a notorious assassin. Read this book if you have time to kill, but don't expect to see Clancy's finest.
Rating: Summary: Quite disappointing. Not a typical Clancy novel. Review: The characters were uninteresting and the plot slow and full of holes. After reading many of Clancy's other books, this was comes up short. Not really worth reading.
Rating: Summary: The worst Clancy ever!!! Don't bother. Review: Full of predicable quasi stereotypes, PC silliness and overblown internet wet dreams. Beyond this it's just plain old bad writing. I suspect that this is a lot more the work of Mr. Piecznik than it is of Tom Clancy. I have enjoyed Clancy's work for some time and I found this to be a huge disappointment. No real insight into the technology just pure fantasy on every level. When the 2nd degree black belt man meets the small "well trained" women, can you guess who gets beaten thoroughly? It's not predictable it's downright boring. Don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: Tom Clancy follows the Stephen King Act Review: It looks like Tom C. is pumping books al la King. I used to enjoy Stephen King until he decided to pump watered down books to the public.Net Force does not even rate up to Op Center!! Tom Clancy's Op Center series were not as good as his other novels (which I read at least twice!), however, they were still enjoyable reading. This is the first time a made-for-TV show beats the book!!! The depth of the plot was poor, with the plot taking up one or two chapters at best. What should have been character building sounding more like filler to add pages to the book!! I hope this isn't what us die hard Clancy fans have to look forward to.
Rating: Summary: An Interesting Look about Technology in the Future Review: This book will probably not satisfy the normal Clancy reader, who depends on Clancy's detailed knowledge of a subject--particularly war. It will, however, satisfy first time readers. Also, since the Net is relatively new and mostly untapped, regular readers should give Clancy some breathing room here on the details. With that said, NetForce is about information and power. He who controls the information has the power. I found the women in the book to be interesting, and thought that their characters were well developed. I would have liked to see more character development in some of the other NetForce employees. It's scary to think that this type of "information terrorism" could be in our not too distant future!
