Rating: Summary: Great Companion to the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Review: If you liked The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, you'll find this book very satisfying. Set in a different place and time it also recounts the trials and tribulations of "sisterhood". It is a short read but worthwhile. There is a somewhat predictable mystery but this doesn't detract much from the story. A great book to compare with the Ya-Ya's in book club or with a friend.
Rating: Summary: Quilters Unite! Read this book! Review: This is a great book for quilters. It reveals the close connection and trust quilters have with each other. They create such a special community and this book describes it so well. Plus, its a very good mystry! Read it you won't want it to end.
Rating: Summary: Too quaint, with pasteboard characters Review: A friend recommended this book to me, saying that it was a wonderful book about women's lives. Unfortunately, I found the characters to be very flat and entirely unbelievable. In addition, I had in mind that this book would show some positive aspects about housewives and farmwives. However, the goals and ideals of this club seemed to reinforce the negative stereotypes of women, both who work outside of the home and those who stay at home. The context showed Rita who had goals other than babies and bottles, to be a hussy. While, Queenie Bean was the epitome of the perfect woman, thus reinforcing stereotypes. Very disappointing
Rating: Summary: Definately a book to read! Review: I don't have much to say about it, but the Persian Pickle Club is one of my favorite books. I've probably read it about 5 times now, and every time I love it even more. I felt like Rita and Quinnie were my best friends sharing their deepest secrets with me. If you love books with O'Henery endings, you'll love The Persian Pickle Club.
Rating: Summary: Hard to get into, but ended okay Review: This is the first book I have read by this author and I am not sure if I will read her others. I found it a chore to read until about the fifth chapter when the "mystery" began. Granted, I was eager to find out who did it and was surprised by the outcome, which I guess is a telltale sign of a good mystery. Don't get me wrong, THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB is not a bad novel. Actually, the story is quite good once it starts rolling. I probably won't be as quick to recommend this to others as I have been with other novels. But if you want a quick "mini-mystery" to pass the time, this book will provide.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorites. This book spoke to me. Review: I first heard about Persian Pickle Club while attending a national conference in North Carolina last October. It was recommended by a fellow fan of Bailey White (Mama Makes Up Her Mind....). I've carried the book and author name tucked in my wallet since October, but had not yet ordered it. I was amazed when I received it from a friend for my birthday last week. Life truely is stranger than fiction. I had not mentioned the book to anyone and did not know the book was set in Harveyville, Kansas. I live 15 miles from Harveyville and was a speech pathologist there ten years ago. I loved the book and the author's metaphorical use of quilts and and the quilting process. Every woman should have a support group like the Persian Pickle Club or Ya-Ya Sisters. They were so loyal and demonstrated such a strong sense of integrity, perserverance and friendship. My husband read and enjoyed the book and was not as enthralled.
Rating: Summary: A gentle, comfortable read Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters are well drawn and endearing. The sense of place and time is good, but not intrusive. I felt that the mystery was overdone and predictable. Still, it didn't tarnish my enjoyment of the book, and I plan to look up the author's other books.
Rating: Summary: Slow at first; but gains momentum. Review: Easy quick read. The first half did not grab me, but I enjoyed the second half of the book. I'm glad I finished it.
Rating: Summary: an entertaining who-dun-it Review: This was quite a book! I loved the supportive relationships the women all had with one another. By the end of the book, I couldn't have cared less who did the murder, I just wanted the story to go on forever. I wanted to know more about these women. Give me more!
Rating: Summary: I absolutely loved this book! So did my husband. Review: I inhaled this book. Then I turned around and read it aloud to my husband one rainy day. It was a near perfect woman's book. Funny, lots of good characters, a nice twist in the end. I especially liked the quilting, cooking and canning references ... particularily the one about a woman never being able to look at fabric without feeling it between her fingers. I also really liked The Diary of Matty Spencer for similar reasons but was not much charmed by Buster Midnight.
