Rating: Summary: Excellent read - Buy it Review: 'The Memory Game' had me in it's clutches within the first chapter. I could not put the book down. I became irrevocably involved with the main character as if she were talking to me, and me alone. Brilliant piece of mastery. If you've read this novel then you must read N. French's new novel, 'The Safe House'. It has the same intensity and flow as her previous work. Not to be missed.
Rating: Summary: In my memory forever!! Dianne Hakvoort- The Netherlands. Review: For the first time since Donna Tartt's Secret History I have come across an astonishingly good read! The story, plot and the lively characters made my day. Thanks to Mrs French, hopefully there are more wonderful novels to come!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Overall... Review: Having just read 'The Memeory Game' while I was sick, I can recommend it as a good novel to while away the hours, and an interesting look at issues surrounding repressed memory. It is one of those novels that creeps up on you, and before you know it, you've become engrossed and finished half the book. The one problem that I had with it was that the ending was too abrupt - it felt like the author had reached a word limit and now had to wrap up as quickly as possible, a disappointment after an otherwise good read. Recommended for holidays or plane trips where you want something interesting but light at the same time.
Rating: Summary: Had to read Review: I had to read this book because I had to do a class assignment. I found that the story\ plot was good but there was too much description to keep me interested. Im not one to pick a book apart because of it's faults and I never will. But there was so much description of every little thing around her that I wanted to put it down, It bored me!. Except I couldn't as with most murder, mysteries I wanted to find out what happened at the end. Overall the book was okay but it took to long with lots of unnesscary crap.
Rating: Summary: Not badly written Review: I have just finished reading this book and must disagree with those readers who found it to be badly written. In my opinion it was no better or worse than most other mystery novels. I also think people get a little paranoid about the smoking and drinking of the Jane character. It was obviously excessive and used to illustrate the stress and strain she was undergoing in her search for the truth. We all know smoking and heavy drinking are bad for you(as Jane frequently acknowledges) but it's not a reason to dislike the book.I thought the story was gripping and the repressed memory aspect an interesting angle.
Rating: Summary: Good listen with a disappointing end Review: I listened to this unabriged reading during a long drive. I was engrossed with the story, the reader's voice, and the details, until the 11th hour (literally). I found the ending unsatisfying. The author takes us on a painstaking journey through a woman's life & memory, but she did not allow us to journey with Jane to the end. A twist at the end of a story is satisfying, but the way this twist was presented seems like a cheap trick.
Rating: Summary: True emotions, intriguing plot Review: Nicci French took a potentially explosive topic (repressed memories and those who accuse family members of wrongdoing as a result of retrieving these memories) and addressed it with great emotional honesty and strength. Accusations against family members due to the recovery of repressed memories has happened within my own family and I thought the writing was strong, true, and emotionally accurate, very close to my own real life experience. French was able to package these raw emotions within an engrossing thriller that kept me turning the pages without diluting or cheapening the emotional power of the traumas her main character faced. I was impressed by French's ability to manage the psychological interior of her confused, unhappy main character -- the story is psychologically dead on target.
Rating: Summary: Good listen with a disappointing end Review: Overall I loved it. When I was abroud in London for a college semester I bought this book for 10lbs. I just learned that it is selling for $84. I am absolutely astonished!!!! Anyhow, I found the writting a bit below average but the content gripping. I have yet to see the movie but I'm sure it will keep me in suspense the whole way through it. I recommend this book highly and would love to see more of Nicki French's work.
