Summary: A book of endless memorable lines
Review: I picked up this book at the public library yesterday and finished it this morning. The library copy of Losing Julia is now so dogeared that I must get a copy of my own...or spend my morning writing the memorable lines and scenes in my journal. It's been a long time since I have read a book that was this painful...as a teacher, the book captures all I want my students to learn from reading about war in Red Badge and The Things They Carried; I will certainly shared selected passages with them as we bring to a close our look at war in literature. Personally, having experienced a love like Patrick and Julia, I share Hull's belief that true love can never be replaced...living alone is preferable to sharing a life without what is truly love. As a writer, I hope to, one day, capture in my own novel what Jonathon Hull has in his. Thank you, Jonathon Hull, for your beautiful writing.

Summary: I laughed, I cried...
Review: This book was without a doubt the most lyrical story I have read in recent memory. Hull manages to capture to finest details about comeraderie in the trenches, the passion of the love that got away and the angst of old age. It was a wonderful journey. Anyone who discounts the love story between Patrick and Julia did not understand the book! (And that is a tragedy in and of itself). I'd put this book on my top ten recommended list.

Summary: THIS ONE IS A GEM
Review: Losing Julia is more than an impressive first novel. It could very well rank as a classic when the rest of the world discovers it. This is prose that becomes poetry at times. This is the tragedy of life turned into chuckles, tears turned into magnifying glasses of truth. This is a war story with remarkable observations: "You should see this, Father. Damn! Your son, Patrick, right up against the German lines! Goddamn, Father, would you believe it? Your son! Look at me. Father, look at me dangling both feet over the edg3e of the universe, jumping the moon, soaring up and up farther than anyone has ever gone...How do I get back I want to get back."

It is a love story that endures absences and separations and the pain of growing old. It is the voice of love speaking across the years and the image of love strong until the end.

It is a way to laugh at the damage old age can do to the body, but not the spirit. It is planning your funeral with a wry laugh, and deciding whether your last words will be "some cosmic knowledge" or "The treasure is buried beneath the...and be cheered by the thought of them digging holes for the rest of their lives." It is an eighty year old man writing love letters to his nurse and longing to "get laid" just once more before he dies.

This book is done with a minimum of words and the author never lets the reader down. I can't wait to see what Jonathan Hull writes next.

Summary: great and not so great
Review: I thought this book was really 3 books in one: Patrick's WWI experiences, his experience of growing old trapped in a dying body, and his memories of his true love: julia. The first two parts were great. I loved reading them, they were funny, sad, and very evocative. However the parts about Julia were right out of _The Bridges of Madison County_ (as others have mentioned), and I really didn't like those parts.

Since the part about Julia are important to the story, I don't think they can be skipped or skimmed so I would not recommend the book. But I did give it 3 stars for the WWI and present sections.

Summary: WORDY!
Review: I thought this book went on too long, rambled through two continents, and was UNBELIEVEABLE at the end. This certainly won't be on my Christmas list to give anyone.

Summary: Absolutely Awesome!
Review: This is one of my favorite books of all time. I read constantly and never reread a book, but this one I would immdediately to remember all the words of wisdom on analyzing love, life, old age, the horrors of war. I definitely will buy this book to keep and recommend it to others. I hated to finish it. And to think it is his first book. So much insight indeed!

Summary: Diane Yannick
Review: This is without a doubt one of the best books I've read. It made me think about war, growing old, relationships and life in general. I have earmarked pages that I must go back and reread. I'm usually anxious to pass my books on but I am hesitant to part with this one. I can't wait to read Jonathan Hull's second book.

Summary: An interesting story overall, but...
Review: I found myself not really liking the character of Julia very much and hence found the love affair aspect a bit overdone. It took me some time to get into this book - I've been picking it up and putting it down since March and only just ended up finishing it last week. It didn't really grab me as I thought it might based on reviews. However, I found the writing strong and will definately seek out other work of the same author in the future.

Summary: One of the Best
Review: I just finished Losing Julia and have to say that I could not put it down. It was captivating and made me think about life. I can only hope that in this life time I get the chance to experience the love that Jonathan Hull wrote about. I am not usually a fan of war novels but this took my breathe away and if I could erase the memory of reading and experience the book all over again I would. I recommend it to anyone who wants to read something beatiful.
