Rating: Summary: Pros and Cons Review: I found the book provocative and enlightening, but also repetitive and murky in some areas. There's much to be gained from reading this and, depending upon where you are on the path, it may well change your life. But although most of the book was clear and accessible, there were other parts that I wish had been explained more simply and succinctly. Without at least some understanding of Einstein's theory of relativity and quantum physics, portions of this book will be difficult for many readers to plow through ...
Rating: Summary: A Return of The Ancient Knowledge and Wisdom Review: "How to Know God," in my opinion, is based on the very ancient Hermetic Philosophy. "How to Know God" written by Deepak Chopra is an excellent book for those who are interested in searching the SPIRIT and matter of which all of us are composed. I do not agree that God is the process itself, but rather, the "cause" of all processes that we observe in nature such as the four seasons of our environment; The rise and fall of governments and nations for example and the creative activity of the Universe. What we as human observe in nature as various processes in our environment is the "effect" of the "cause." The CAUSE itself remains hidden from the general public's view by reason of their established preconceived belief systems. "How to Know God" is a good start as an eye opener and gives the open minded reader a "looking glass" into the "creative mental activity" (cause) of SPIRIT of which there is nothing that can escape its presence.J. Rating: Summary: An excellent work from a master of thought. Review: This almost perfect work is very well done and Depak speaks well and is easy to understand. He speaks of things that are pretty enlightening and has an interesting idea of how the universe really is. Its a long listen with three tapes but is well worth the money.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: This is a wonderful read, and I would recommend it to every human on earth. Deepak is simply amazing and this is just the start of spiritual "awakening". Expecting some made up war again anytime soon.
Rating: Summary: Deepak's Best Review: Dr. Chopra spends a lot of time describing a pre-rational image instead of a trans-rational image. (Joseph Cambell spent his life devoted to sudying pre-rational myths.) The better for the average person to comrehend. You have to meet your audience at the level they are understanding. Most people do not know the difference between Pre-rational and trans-rational. Sometimes I'm not even sure I do. With all of the above said this is a great book. I believe Deepak Chopra's heartfelt best. He obviously did a lot of research and hard work to write this book. I enjoyed it immmensely, and continue to read it from time to time, even if I do not agree with everything I read. I believe as a reader we can take what works and leave the rest behind with gratitude that it made us pause to think. There are some reviews that "idolize" this book and others that "awfulize" this book. I think the greatness of this book is that it fits into the "middle path, between excess and deficiency, between exageration and minimization to a place of love" to paraphrase another great author.
Rating: Summary: chopra should stick to being a doc.. Review: I give this book 2 stars for the entertainment it provides coming from someone so full of himself. I am worried that chopra is being regarded by many in the west as one of the leaders regarding Indian spiritualism. If this is the case, it is quite sad, because India has some genuine spiritual giants whose sincerity could never be questioned i.e. ramakrishna, ramana maharshi etc. These individuals words have the ring of truth, and they didn't have a medical clinic on the side charging obscene amounts of money for an 'ayurvedic massage' etc...
Rating: Summary: How to escape God. Review: Chopra is a skillful writer who has read (well, skimmed) widely. But he should have called this book, "How to get away from God." Here are some of the dodges he uses: 1. "One bald fact stands at the beginning of any search for God. He leaves no footprints in the material world." This statement sets the tone for the immense subjective dogmatism of the book. But that which you decide at the beginning of your search should not be called a "fact," but a "prejudice." Before you agree on this point too quickly, read Creator and the Cosmos, by astronomer Hugh Ross. 2. Chopra treats both Christianity and science as a bird searching for twigs for his own nest treats the nests of other birds. He retells the story of Adam and Eve casting serpent as hero and God as villain; in the process overlooking all the profound subtleties and psychological insights of the passage. He shamelessly misrepresents Christianity: "None of the kings of Israel is punished for going to war." (False.) "Jesus is adamantly opposed to war." (He never said so.) "Christianity was too new to be lawful." (No, it was too exclusive; there were lots of new religions, then as now.) "In the Bible one finds such verses as, "Seek ye the kingdom of heaven within." (Uh, no, one doesn't.) 3. Chopra freely picks and chooses from science as well. He waves the words "science" and "quantum physics" before the readers like magic wands. But like Rajneesh, who called intellect "the chief villain," and Muktananda, who promised to liberate his followers from "impossible webs of intellect," Chopra believes we create our own reality, and it shows in his science as well. The art in sophistry is to get your victims to believe because it is absurd: to seduce the clever into thinking themselves wise (and thus becoming fools) through confusing paradox with ordinary nonsense. This is an art, because if you say things too directly ("Jesus was a Hindu. The Jews chose extermination.") the paradox deflates into parody, and the spell snaps. Chopra, more than Walsch, is a master of inflated, high-sounding, ego-massaging argument, but many of his ideas reduce to such things. If you want true paradox, as well as refreshment after all this sophistry, try G. K. Chesterton, Lao Zi, the Prayer of St. Francis, or the Beatitudes. 4. Chopra grossly confuses the categories of miracle and magic. (See my book, Jesus and the Religions of Man, for an empirical discussion of the differences.) 5. Chopra is a naive about modern guruism, meditation, and the various gurus. For more critical views, see Spiritual Tourist by Mick Brown, Avatar of Night by Tal Brooke, or Truth and Social Reform and (best of all) The World of Gurus, by Indian thinker Vishal Mangalwadi. 6. Chopra also passes over real common ground between Hinduism and Christianity. One strong element in the ancient Rig Veda is the theme of sacrifice, of God who is also man who will sacrifice Himself. (With a great deal of very interesting prophetic detail. Again, see Jesus and the Religions of Man.) If Chopra wanted to join the two religions, he missed a good chance here. But of course he wants Christianity to evolve into his idea of Hinduism, not the other way around. Unlike Chopra, I do not claim to be an expert on God. But of two things I am certain: that in His essential nature, the true God is good. And that the path to God at every stage, for saint as much as sinner, begins in humility. As Jesus said, "No one can enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless he becomes as a little child." Let me suggest a few books by people who came to God as children, and really met him. By Searching, by Isobel Kuhn; Confessions, by Augustine; and Goforth of China, by Rosalin Goforth. I also recommend John Piper's Enjoying God: The Confessions of a Christian Hedonist.
Rating: Summary: No stars for Chopra Review: As someone who has genuinely transformed all the way to Oneness by way of direct experience (Deepak's "Unity consciousness"), I can assure you that Deepak Chopra is not "attuned" to the true nature of reality, only to the true nature of how to pull the wool over the eyes of the public in order to make himself a very wealthy man. I sincerely hope that more people will read this negative review, and the several other well-written similar reviews, first, before buying (and buying into) his trickery. Every century has had its great "snake-oil salesmen," but Chopra has got to be the king of them all. He is, without question, another great pretender, cunningly promoting his own prerational myth and magic level perceptions and beliefs as genuinely transrational truths solely for the sake of adding even more money to his already over-flowing pockets. On reading this book (thank god I had the sense to only borrow it), I half expected to eventually come across a chapter on how Santa Claus and his reindeer, by way of quantum mind manipulation, are able to span the globe in a single night! Indeed, this latest book confirmed my previous intuitions regarding Chopra; he is, at best, at level 3 of his own borrowed "7 levels of consciousness" ideology. And no one from that lower level of consciousness has the capacity, and therefore the right, to even attempt to describe the qualities and perceptions of any of the higher levels of consciousness; what he is doing is tantamount to a first-grader attempting to describe, for example, Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. His flagrant misuse of quantum mechanics, of which he obviously has no real concept, as an attempt to rationalize a wide range of superstitious beliefs, from angels to flying nuns, is deplorable, to say the least. I was also very dismayed to read that such respected individuals as the Dalai Lama, and especially Ken Wilber (who, in the past, has done his best to illustrate the enormous difference between the prerational and transrational modes of awareness) are in support of this horrifically immature man and his latest scam of a book. It says a great deal about the level of consciousness they too actually are at, doesn't it?
Rating: Summary: EYE-OPENING LOGIC Review: I discovered Dr. Chopra and his works while listening to the Oprah show one evening. I have to tell you that I was a sceptic until I was challenged to purchase the audio tapes of 'How to Know God'. This has been close to 6 months ago and I am still learning and opening new doors in my mind. The book has allowed me to transform my everyday existance to a new level. Dr. Chopra uses quantum physics, notes scientific studies to develop the foundation for God. What Dr. Chopra has made us realize is that all religions in the world are similar when it comes to the Unknown - God. We are all praying, meditating, etc.. to the same God. I thouroughly enjoyed the audio book and intend to follow it's teachings.
