Rating: Summary: "Tao of Physics" For Dummies ? Review: I have never read anything by Chopra but was intrigued by his comments regarding the book in a brief TV interview. After reading most of the reviews here, I've decided that Fritjof Capra probably said whatever is in "How to Know God" in a much more succinct and convincing manner. Thank you to everyone who reviewed this book; for those who enjoyed it, if you are of a scientific bent you will enjoy "The Tao of Physics" as well.
Rating: Summary: Quite the archaeological tool for the mind and soul. Review: This book inables me to see not only the evolvement of our image of God, but my own evolvement through my lifetime. It also is helping me to drudge up some of my old beliefs that still are in my subconscious. It is an excellent book that brings those subtle truths out into full light. It helps me understand how thinking causes us to evolve. If we can't work out what we believe to make sense then we alter that belief slightly and so on and so on. Very interesting. Quite the archaeological tool for the mind and soul.
Rating: Summary: The Simple Truths behind all beliefs Review: This book if for everyone who has felt there was something missing from the mainstream religious practices. Chopra is getting to the very root of who we are, and our endless possibilities as human and spiritual beings. Our mind, body and spirit make up our whole selves. When one is out of balance, the other two are also out of balance. What Chopra is teaching is at the root of all belief systems, if you can dig below all the politics, dogma and ritual and end up with the pure essence of that belief. That essence is the root of all. Lao Tsu expresseed this teaching in the Tao te Ching. Tom Brown, Jr.'s books also teach of this pure root, as shown by his teacher, a very spritiual grandfather from the Lipan Apache tribe. Extremely powerful. Chopra, Lao Tsu, Tom Brown's words go hand and hand and they are from different parts of the world. They are universal. Check them out before passing judgement... Tom Brown also published several excellent wilderness field guides.
Rating: Summary: The best yet! Review: I have read nearly all of Chopra's works and this is the best yet! Having grown up in a very conservative religion which caused me to wonder about God, Chopra's deep insights have presented a view of God that I always thought was out there.Although this book will take more than one reading, it made a big impact on my thinking. For any one who is willing to break away from the old external beliefs and find your own way, this book is the best! Thanks, Deepak!
Rating: Summary: Hard wiring is old science Review: Its amazing what people will buy into. The fans of this book praise the author for tolerance and open mindedness. They think his ideas are new and liberating. Yet they display so much anger and hostility at the their own western traditions! Where is the liberal mindedness of the rewiewer below who praises the book because she approves of anything that angers Christians? The ideas Chopra draws on form the cultural basis of societies whose social stuctures are ridged and opressive(ex. India's caste system). When he does draw on ideas originating the "west" they are old and and hardly liberating such as "hard wired" brains that know God. If these ideas are so creative and liberating why are the places where they form the dominant belief system so repressive? Political liberty never sprouted from "eastern" mysticism. If you want a sublime example of the relationship between God and man read Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugral Address. You are all looking for wisdom in a man writes popular books which enrich him whlile you ignore it in your own history. The only history where freedom has flourished. Maybe there is a reason for this. Maybe our own intellectual traditons aren't so evil after all. Maybe Lincoln was smart enough to know this and to understand the relationship between the Bible and the liberation of oppressed people.
Rating: Summary: JUST A LAY PERSON TRYING TO FIND ANSWERES Review: DID I FIND ANSWERS? YES AND I THINK THAT "HOW TO KNOW GOD" HAS HELPED ME ON MY PATH... WILL I EVER HAVE THE COMPLETE FEELING THAT I REALLY KNOW GOD? ONLY WHEN I DIE....... BUT FOR A LAY PERSON THIS BOOK IS GOOD NOT GREAT BUT GOOD AND THANKS TO THE AUTHOR FOR MAKING IT EASIER TO KNOW GOD A LITTLE BETTER AND I WILL CONTINUE ON MY PATH.........
Rating: Summary: Great Book for the open-minded and searching. Review: If you are searching for a relationship with God or trying to decide if you believe in him or not, by all means give this book a try. The author has some very unique and enlightening ideas and does not come across as claiming this is the only way, do it or else. I found myself putting this book down every 10 to 12 pages just to think about what I had read. It helped me tremendously and I plan on reading it again with no break between readings. If you are someone who has your mind made up and feel somewhat threatened by new ideas, please don't spend your money. You won't get past chapter two. I don't understand that way of thinking however, and have a hard time believing that the people who wrote negative reviews actually took the time to read this book. Good luck to all in your search.
Rating: Summary: Quite interesting Review: This book is deep as it must have been a challenge to write a book about this subject. Deepak carefully analyses each aspect of knowing God. Sure, Chopra's understanding is based on his virtually all-inclusive perception throughout all religions of who God is, but at least he thought about all the various approaches to finding and knowing God. This book will help people think about this subject in a more specific way and in categories. Another book that analyses how we may know God, and a book that I highly recommend is Dietmar Scherf's "I Love Me: Avoiding & Overcoming Depression."
Rating: Summary: A rare approach to the God question Review: This is the book to read if you promised yourself never to read about God -- as he is usually presented. As much as I enjoyed this book, it seems more important to point out that it attempts to be factual about God rahter than religious. No faith is slighted, yet none is endorsed, either. Deepak attempts to gather as many arguments as possible for a God that can be experienced rather than blindly believed in, and the 'how to' aspect is an open invitation to explore one's own heart, mind, and spirit to see if the evidence for God is personally convincing.
Rating: Summary: Nothing new and beneath the surface something very old Review: I spent some time with this book and found nothing new in it.You can go back to Capra's books of over 20 years ago and find thesame kind of reductionism as Stephen Gould pointed out in his reviews of the The Turning Point and The Tao of Physics. It's all easy answeres and comes down to the anatomy of the brain. It's not faith its "hard wiring" that that counts. There is so much certainty in The authors' belief that he knows God you have to look hard for any sense of humility in the face of the eternal. Other than that the book is interesting and deserves a couple of stars. END
