Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good Book?
Review: Yeah, I'd say so. Catherine Carmier was Gaines's first novel, and it is clear that his writing has matured since. Nevertheless, it is a well-developed novel that will make you consider moral issues. Gaines presents these issues in a unique way; he doesn't clearly define positive and negative forces in the novel. Even though some characters are somewhat stock and underdeveloped, Catherine Carmier is a solid read that any Gaines fan will enjoy.
