Summary: MULTIPLE MURDER ON HOG-KILLING DAY
Review: FIRST - THIS IS NOT A NOVEL!!! IT IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE.

A GREAT PICTURE OF A SOUTHERN FAMILY FUN AMUCK WITH POWER AND MONEY AND MEAN!! SOME MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY KEPT THE RESIDENTS OF THE PEE DEE AREA OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN TERROR FOR OVER 100 YEARS.

WELL-WRITTEN AND WELL RESEARCHED - IT IS NOT AS EMOTIONAL AS THE ZEIGLER'S LAST OF THE BIGHAMS, WHICH WAS WRITTEN AT THE HEIGHT OF THE SCANDAL AND THE SUCCEEDING SENSATIONAL TRIAL(S).

THERE IS MUCH DOUBT (AND ACTUALLY MUCH EVIDENCE) REGARDING THE GUILT OF THE PERSON CONVICTED OF THE MURDER OF HIS FAMILY. EDMUND BIGHAM WAS A MILD-MANNERED MAN WHO SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN THE ONLY "NORMAL" PERSON IN THE FAMILY. HE WAS PROBABLY CONVICTED ON THE BASIS OF HIS NAME, BY A JURY WHO DID NOT LET FACTS GET IN THE WAY OF THEIR VERDICT.

A GREAT READ BY A WONDERFUL RESEARCHER AND WRITER!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Summary: Nice
Review: I read this novel two years ago when I was in the tenth grade. It was nice to read a piece centered in South Carolina, where I live. I like the "two sides to the story" plot given by the author, parts of the novel are extremely well written. The imagery and descriptiona are excellent, but there are parts of the novel that are very boring ( i.e. the chapter describing the financial state of the family) Overall, a decent read. Since it has been a while sice I have read the novel, I cant critique it as well as I would like to, since I may make a mistake, so I will stop here.

Summary: Just As Good the Second Time
Review: I used to hear tales about the famous Bigham family from my father, who had grown up near the town of Bishopville while these events were taking place. I have a sister who was living in Darlington at the time the book was pubished, and who bought a copy for me. Just this past week, while looking through some of my old books, I got the book down and read it again for the second time. The purpose of the book is not to establish the guilt or innocence of anyone, but I was convinced then and am still convinced that Edmund was innocent of murdering his family although he served a life sentence for doing so. Interestingly, enough, he was finally paroled in 1960, the year I graduated from Bishopville High School, and I remember the event very well. This is a true story of a tragic event that occured within a tragic family. The book is well researched and well written. I recommend it to anyone who has a love of authenic history, and especially all those, like myself, who have a deep love for the Southland.
