Rating: Summary: It's supernatural! Review: Before I begin, let me tell you that this is not Artemis Fowl. It is just as good as AF in it's own right, so don't expect an AF clone. Continuing the spate of between-Artemis-Fowl books, Eoin Colfer genuinely surprised me with this book containing traits from the books mentioned above in the title.
This book is about an orphan named Cosmo Hill, who goes to the Clarissa Frayne institute for the parentally challenged [laughs] where sadistic marshalls test deadldy products on the inmates. One day Cosmo escapes from Clarissa Frayne and gets horribly injured in the resulting chase. Luckily he is rescued by the self entitled "Supernaturalists", a group of people who can see supernatural creatures, named parasites, who, apperantly, suck the life out of dying people. Cosmo's one goal im life is to fit in, and this group gives him the chance to do so. He embraces the group's ideals with a passion, hunting the parasites every night with high-tech gadgets quietly reminiscent of AF. But little does he know that one member of the groupl has a secret. BUM BUM BUM!
This book is for anyone who has liked any of Mr. Colfer's books, or, for that matter, anyone with a liking for good reads.
Note: There is a fourth AF coming out soon, "The Opal Deception".
Rating: Summary: No Artemis Fowl Review: I became a fan of Eoin Colfer after reading the Artemis Fowl series. Unlike the Supernaturalist, the Artemis Fowl books have in-depth characters, unique plots and witty dialouge. Here, Colfer seems to focus purely on the technological aspect of the story, and forgets the rest. Sure, while we get a blow by blow description of the characters plugging in some electro gadget or other, we wonder what this has to do with the story. The charactars are pretty stereotypical, with nothing particularily unique or fascinating. The plot is interesting enough, and the setting, while grotesque is well presented. The problem is, the characters don't seem to interact with the setting or eachother. When Colfer throws in the "plot twists," there is no slow suspensful build up to make them as shocking as they could have been. It's as if someone said, okay the bomb blew up in the Restaurant! Versus, showing people eating and minding their own business, and then showing the villian with the bomb. What this book did do for me, is help me appreciate how good the Artemis Fowl books really are. I've felt that the Supernaturalist is Eoin Colfer's second dud (counting the Wish List.) I really hope he doesn't suffer from Sophomore Slump, and brings back the sparkle and magic of Artemis Fowl. Perhaps this book should have spent some more time in the editing room, replacing the technology with actual human emotion.
Rating: Summary: Super Supernaturalist! Review: If you like the Artemis Fowl series, you'll love The Supernaturalist. This exciting adventure takes place in the future, in Satellite City. I really enjoyed reading this book and The Supernaturalist was really hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: Whoa... Review: Only because I realised I didn't care enough when one of the major characters died at the end. Otherwise, it was brilliant. However, I know that some people did not like Artemis Fowl because they can't accept the whole anti-hero thing, so maybe "The Supernaturalist" is a better introduction to Eion Colfer's addictive work.
Rating: Summary: Exciting and thought provoking Review: Sci-fi or fantasy readers will be interested in this story set in a dystopian future. Colfer has so many layers to his stories. On one level this is a mystery-save-the-world adventure. On another, we ponder the value of human life and what makes it worth saving?
Cosmo Hill was named after the place he was found as a baby. An orphan, he lives at the Clarissa Frayne Institute for Parentally Challenged Boys. The "institute" uses the boys for all kinds of horrible government and industry product testing. Cosmo dreams of escape (no matter how unlikely) before his life expectancy of 15 years is up.
When his chance comes he escapes but is terribly hurt. In his wounded state he has his first vision of tiny blue creatures that seem to be feeding off his life force. He is rescued by a band of misfits who call themselves the Supernaturalists because they alone can see these energy parasites and are committed to destroying them. Cosmo joins their group and devotes himself to their cause but all is not as it seems. What are these strange creatures and what politics and dynamics are at work in his new family?
Colfer is terrific at plotting fast-paced action-packed stories. He has a real gift for dreaming up amazing techno-gadgetry. His Artemis Fowl books are full of technical wonders. Even in his book "The Wish Lis"t he has St. Peter and Beelzebub talking on very high tech cell phones.
A former student who saw me looking at this book at the library made a point to tell me it was one of the best books he had ever read.
Rating: Summary: Excellent and fascinating book! Review: This book and its author created a fascinating world and reality in which to follow believable characters through the fantastic. Much the way more traditional sci-fi and space opera has done over the years and continues to do: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Rendezvous with Rama", "2001", "2010", "Childhood's End", "I,Robot", "Ringworld", "Advent of the Corps", and more.
Rating: Summary: In the eyes of the beholder Review: This is an extrordinary book! The best book I have ever read! That is saying something since I am a really big Harry Potter fan! If you are looking for a great read you have found it.
The book Starts out in the future with an orphan named Cosmo Hill he is 14 and is also known as a no-sponser. At this so called orphanage they test toxic products on the orphans to see if they are safe for the rest of the world and what products are best. Time is running out for Cosmo because it is a rare occasion an orphan lives past 15. Cosmo gets lucky and escapes while being transported. A team known as the Supernaturalists find Cosmo and restore him to health. He becomes a member of this team and they embark on a quest to rid the world of life sucking parasites, but everything is not how it seems. The group find out many secrets that have been kept hidden and the book ends with a sad twist that was very unexpected.
Read this book because this is the best book you will ever read!!! This author writes better then J.K Rowling which is a very hard thing for me to say. Eoin Colfer (author) has very good word choiceand writes realistically.
Rating: Summary: Not a waste of time or money Review: This is not Aretimis Fowl. If you come in excpecting Artemis Fowl, you are likely to be disappointed. This is a very good book. Eoin Colfer uses his ability to write fantastic characters that you find your self torn between who you like the best, similiar to Aretmis Fowl. Take it from me, an average 14 year old boy much like Cosmo, Colfer captures his feelings greatly. However, sometimes the plot moves a bit to fast and some of the early plot twists are a tad predictable, despite it you will find yourself loving this book. The one thing that seperates this from Aretimis Fowl is the fact that this one has a better ending then any of the three. Overall, a book you won't be sorry you read.
