Rating: Summary: The best way to while away a sick day. Review: I admit, most of the clues simply went whoosh over my head but I managed to find the culprit without cheating. However, when I looked in the answer sheets to see how I had been EXPECTED to solve the conundrum, I was simply shocked at the complexity of the clues and hints. This book is surely a work of genius and (though it does have pretty pictures) is definitely not children material.
If you're an adult and are fond of riddles, buy this book (but beware: you'll be in for a sore brain if your IQ ranking is below 270)
Rating: Summary: Just Amazing for kids and adults!! Review: I first saw this book when my six year old son saw it at the library. He wanted to check it out because his summer school teacher had read it to him and he said it was really good. So we brought it home and read it. Of course, by the second page my son was revealing the answer to the mystery (because his teacher had explained it to him). So, I didn't get to figure it out like everyone else. After we read the book, I put my children to bed and promptly went back to the couch and picked it up. I went to the "top secret" section in the back that reveals the answer to the mystery. Detailed explanations about each clue on each page were there and everything was so fascinating. If you've had this book forever and not figured out the mystery, your missing out on a lot of neat info by not opening the back section! I plan to buy this book for road trips... I think my kids could entertain themselves for hours trying to find all the mice!
Rating: Summary: I use this book at the start of my math class every year... Review: I have 35 copies of this book and we start the school year with a focus on problem solving. My middle school students, in groups of four, solve as many of the puzzles as they can, determine the names and costumes of all the guests (one is almost impossible) and learn a lot about working together as a group in the process. This book is really great, captures the imagination of my students and is a great way to start the year.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Children's Novel Review: Perfect for the curious and inquisitive child, the Eleventh Hour was one of my favorite books as a kid, I enjoyed every day it took me to solve the mystery, running with glee to my mom or dad every time I found a new clue, or solved another piece of the puzzle. So when I wanted to buy some books for a neice who loves to read the Eleventh Hour was at the top of my lengthy list. She has enjoyed the book and solved the mystery pretty quickly for an 8 year old, and even solved she still loves to spend hours looking through the book at its beautiful illustrations and try to find more hidden clues to the mystery. This is most certainly the perfect book for any imaginative and curious child!
Rating: Summary: im 15 and i still enjoy it Review: This book is great for readers of all ages but while the child will love the cute stories and the vibrant pictures the adults will enjoy the hidden clues and secrets. Base is truly a genius in his imagry taken from real architectual masterpieces blended with an elephant touch. His witty wordplay is cute and will occasionaly make you groan at an enjoyable pun. There are small jokes and some odd clues that lead to nowhere but if you claim to have solved the entire book without the help of the answers in the back then you are lying. All in all-this book is amazing.
Rating: Summary: Unforgetable! I love it! Review: This book is such a great book for children. I first read this book when I was in the 2nd grade (1992). I loved it. Around my freshman year of high school I started thinking about the book again and was trying to find it. I didn't have a title or an author so it was complicated! I'm now a sophomore in college and I just found the book!! I just ordered a copy. What I'm getting at is, the book is definitely one that will stick with you. Unforgetable. The illistrations are incredible. Great book for any child OR adult!
Rating: Summary: Curious? A Wonderful Mystery! Review: This is still one of my favorite childrens books, I remember pouring over the highly detailed paintings of Graeme Base trying to pick out the clues in each and every one of the pictures. I recomend this book to anyone with children, I haven't met one who didn't like it! It's also a wonderful gift for parents of smaller children because they can still have much fun along with their children trying to pick out every single clue to deduce the hungry guest really is.

Rating: Summary: A Mind Stretching Book Review: While the illustrations are superb and disovering some of the clues can be great fun, solving all them is arguably impossible. For those who happen to be well schooled (certainly not children) in obscure areas of knowledge, it may be possible, but not likely given that the author makes one significant error (see page where animals discover feast is missing) and takes such liberty as making up some, but not all of the hieroglyphics (very misleading). Some COULD be deciphered, one, for the letter Q would be an extremely fortunate guess. Morse code can be translated online but will not be within casual reach of many children. The author has some brilliant ideas that are just not well suited for his intended audience. As an adult book, the conclusions are challenging, if not impossible in certain areas due to the aforementioned, however, children can certainly enjoy it if they are not frustrated by the unlikelihood they will solve the mystery based on solving each of the author's clues. If they enjoy the possibility of a correct answer based on guesswork and solving the occasional clue, it may be very enjoyable for them.
