Rating: 5 stars
Summary: My new favorite novel
Review: I read this novel for my AP English class and thought it was the most thought provoking, intelligent, ambiguous novel I have read in my life. Munif was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature (I think the year was 1981). The story is of an archaic Saudi Arabian town focused only on tradition and honor. This town struggles with the imposing force of modernity, dealing with new generations and influences from a nearby large city. The story is not so much focused on the people and dialog, but the town itself. One of the most intriguing characters of the novel is actually the desert. I would recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a change of pace from the typical, American "searching for identity" novel. Endings is simply amazing.
