Rating: Summary: Still Laughing at TV reality Review: "Cute" is a generous descriptor for shallow "Filthy Rich." I liken it to a a funny Saturday Night Live sketch that's stretched into a painful feature-length film. Instead, pick up Bridget Jones' Diary or Getting Over It by Anna Maxted.
Rating: Summary: elementary school reading Review: Filthy Rich is an amusing story--one that is perhaps getting a bit dated already because of the vagaries of network television. Our heroine and narrator, Marcie Lee Mallowitz is dumped on live, national television by her fiance after she gives him the incorrect answer in a Who Wants To Be Millionaire-type game show. The dumping is so spectacular that it catches the national imagination--Marcie becomes an instant celebrity a la Darva Conger and others like her. People Magazine and their ilk come running, pursuing her at every turn. This is an amusing novel and because of it's unique story line (as compared to your standard romantic comedy), it is not absolutely predictable. A fun little read--perfect for a two hour plane ride.
Rating: Summary: A Must-Read Review: Hurray for Marcy Lee Mallowitz, the 34-year-old personal life coach who is the appealing heroine of this hilarious page-turner. Marcy becomes a quasi-celeb when dumped on network TV by her doltish orthodontist boyfriend following a disastrous gig as his Lifeline on the game show "So You Want to Be Filthy Rich!" Her world turns upside down as Oprah, Diane and Rosie come knocking, and a mystery man enters her life. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, the author examines contemporary questions of fame, celebrity and personal fulfillment through the eyes of characters who are as memorable for their humanity as for the predicaments that make this book such a hoot. Dorothy Samuels's book is a must-read. And that's my absolute final answer.
Rating: Summary: :(:( Review: I felt like I was reading the same chapter over and over again. There is NO other point to the story other than that the main character doesn't know which TV show interview to choose from and whether or not she should go back on the game show. 17 chapters dedicated to these 2 subjects. Very disappointing.
Rating: Summary: Rich in fun! Review: If you are in the mood for some extremely light fiction, Filthy Rich would be a good pick. Cute, fun and easy to read -- this book is the perfect refresher after something lengthy or intense. Dorothy Samuels has written a nice, leisurely read and I will look forward to more novels from her in the future.Filthy Rich tells the story of 34-year-old Marcy Lee Mallowitz's rise to fame. During a taping of the popular TV game show, So You Want To Be Filthy Rich, Marcy's boyfriend, Neil, is in the hot seat and about to win the $1.75 million dollar prize. His mistake: asking Marcy to be his Lifeline and give him the answer to the winning question. When Marcy gets the answer wrong, Neil blows up and dumps his girlfriend of three years right on national TV! Suddenly, Marcy has become America's Sweetheart -- interviews, commercial spots, walk-on roles, and gifts galore coming pouring in from celebrities, talk-show hosts and journalists all trying to get the exclusive scoop. But what has started as a humiliating debut on television could possibly be a blessing in disguise...if Marcy plays her cards right. Filthy Rich is cute but no great shakes. The idea is semi-original since the author patterned her book after Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and Survivor, but it's still fun to read. This novel is diet food for the brain -- nothing heavy or meaty here -- but loads of readers will enjoy the plight of Marcy, the world's most famous dumpee, regardless of how literary they like their books.
Rating: Summary: Fast and fun. Enjoy. Review: If you're in the mood for a fast, fun read with some redeeming social value, Filthy Rich is a perfect choice. Written in the self-absorbed style of a celebrity tell-all, this clever send-up of America's shallow fixation with fame, personal growth gurus, and low-rent reality TV is bound to please all but the most grouchy readers. The plot is breezy, and the lead character, a professional closet organizer turned professional life coach named Marcy Lee Mallowitz, is irrestible. Hope there's a sequel.
Rating: Summary: hilarious biting look at who can be a celebrity Review: Marcie is spectacularly and publicly dumped by Neil when she is his lifeline on a popular game show "Filthy Rich". She wants to hide from the world, but the world won't let her! Suddenly everyone has an opinion on Marcie based on her unwanted 15 minutes of fame, and every talk-show host in the country wants to interview her. Meanwhile, she is heartbroken over the end of her relationship -- such as it was! But will she get the chance to examine her relationship and pick up the pieces without the world analyzing her every move? Read his gem of a book and see!
Rating: Summary: Still Laughing at TV reality Review: Thanks to lingering popularity of awful reality TV shows - witness the high ratings for Donald Trump's vanity prime-time production-this fun comic novel retains its freshness. The show the book spoofs, Who Wants to be a Millionaire with Regis Philbin,is off-the-air. But its backstage look at the heronine's rise from nobodyhood to instant reality show fame and celebrity is still right-on-target. I really enjoyed this one.
Rating: Summary: A Fun Beach Read Review: This book lacks ANY clever jokes or storyline. I agree with the "elementary school reading" comment. I bought this because of the Bridget Jones reference-well Helen Fiedling should be offended if anyone uses her name in reviewing this book. The jokes are very lame-and immature. I couldn't even finish it. don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, fun read Review: What a fun read. No, it's not deep and literary, but that's not what I wanted to read.
"Filthy Rich" is a great escape read. We've all thought about what it would be like to have our 15 minutes of fame. Lots of us have wondered what it would be like to be sought after by the media. In "Filthy Rich," we go along for the ride with the heroine as it happens to her. And it's a hoot!
