Rating: Summary: New found appreciation Review: After hearing several people talk about meeting Travis Hunter and reading his books, a male friend suggested that I check out his copy of "The Hearts of Men". In the back of my mind, I thought that this was going to be one of those b.s. books about sensitive men with issues. I took the book and told him I would return it in a week or two. I started reading it that night and finished the whole novel the following evening. The only time that I put it down was to use the bathroom and to get something to eat. The Hearts of Men was one of the most sincere and astounding books that I have ever read. Mr. Hunter made his characters so close to real life that he had me wondering if he was talking about someone I knew. I could vividly and emotionally feel what was happening in their lives. What I really loved about this story was how responsible his male characters were. We hear male bashing stories everyday and at every turn. This book was refreshing and very positive. I returned the book to my friend and went out and bought my own copy. I would and have been recommending this book to all of my friends and acquaintances. I was so moved that I ordered his second novel "Married But Still Looking". Mr. Hunter is blessed with an outstanding talent. I am glad that he is able to share it with us. Enjoy this read, as you will be thoroughly surprised. Like me, you will not want to put it down. Let's support this author. Go tell a friend or purchase a copy as a gift.

Rating: Summary: The hearts of men Review: Basically the book is about three men. Their names are Prodigy Banks,Bernard Charles, and Winston Fuller a.k.a. Poppa Doc. Prodigy starts out as being a player, and sleeping with all the sexy women in hi office because he has his shockingly good looks to back him up. Bernard is a workaholic that doesn't have time to spend with his family. Poppa Doc is just someone who likes to drop the knowledge whenever he can and keep the peace. The reason i say this is because Prodigy and Charles are always fighting because of the carjacking incident that occured while bernardss mother and daughter were int the car and one of Prodigy's friends were the one that did it, and also becuase prodigy used to be a gang banger before he moved out to Georgia, Poppa Doc is always trying to keep the peace. When Prodigy's cousin Jermaine comes down Poppa doc also tries to help because he is a gang banger and prodigy doesn't roll like that anymore. All these things are a challenge for Prodigy, when he meets a girl does this all change. When Bernard is faced with a heart-racking decision does this change his life. What about Poppa Doc when he is faced with a serious issue. I think this is a good book to read if you want a book that will keep you wantimg to read more.
Rating: Summary: Fair story; fair writing; one dimensional characters Review: Congratulations to Mr. Hunter for getting the book published and then sold so that it reached a wide audience - great job! I had some issues with the story, writing, and plotting. I disliked the character's soap opera names (Prodigy Banks, Genesis Styles). The Prodigy character was not believable; he seemed to spend all of his time driving around helping everyone but himself. And the scenes between Prodigy and the new love interest at the end of the book did not ring true. And does one believe for a minute that they slept together for a year and didn't have sex? I don't think so. The dialogue between Bernard and his wife was so unrealistic, I cringed at every scene they had together.
The story has a "rah-rah" cheerleader feel to it. I understand the goal (i.e., show that there are responsible, adult men), but there isn't much conflict to demonstrate that point. And when there is conflict, it's handled in a TV movie-of-the-week fashion - all wrapped up in a bow. For example, Jermaine clearly has a drinking problem, but it's miracuously resolved in a paragraph. Poppa Doc has lung cancer, but it felt like background noise and merely used as a plot device since you knew he was going to die. But before he does, he gives an extended speech at his church about family, commitment, etc. to "thunderous applause." Ouch.
There's little subtlety in Mr. Hunter's writing; no nuance; no subtext; not much creativity in allowing characters to develop based on what they do rather than what they say. It was a very busy story with multiple story lines with lots of potential material and issues (religion, extra-marital affairs, the effects of divorce, absent parent, abandonment, alcoholism, cancer, single parenting, reasons men and woman sleep around, career advancement (or lack thereof), mentoring, etc., etc., etc.) I just don't think much of it was fully realized. As a result, the book is a mish-mash of ideas and false starts. The return of Bernard's mother was particularly jarring. She just shows up and every thing is fine.
It was a fair read and I'll definitely get the next book in the series.
Rating: Summary: Men... gotta luv em Review: I truly enjoyed this book. I think the writing style was great, especially how the three main characters were introduced. I like reading a book that draws me into the homes and lives of the characters and this book did that for me. I laughed, cried and disliked the "boy/man" behaviors. Prodigy thinks badly of a woman sleeping with a man she just met, but what about him. (since I can't use profanity and I must watch my words, I can't call him what he really was!!) Prodigy should have asked for a few bucks and he would be a "working man" or "man of the evening". But he does improve himself and his relationship with women (or woman). Bernard was a character that I just didn't like and he got worse. Poppa Doc was the love of the book!!!! I felt so many emotions while reading this book because I have met & dated these types of men (all but Poppa Doc) and it wasn't pleasant. I can't wait to read Travis Hunter's next book. The title alone is so intriguing. Much luv to ya Travis and may God continue to bless you.
Rating: Summary: 'OFF THE HOOK' Review: Recently, I read the book,The Hearts Of Men. I can assure you that I feel that all men should read this book.I am convinced that this book should be a required book for boys and young men in schools and colleges across this nation. If a man want to learn how to treat a woman,he should read this book. If a man want to know how to be a father, he should read this book. If a man want to know how to be a better son and a better husband, he should read this book. Without going into details about the characters,I can say that the characters in the book are characters you may know in real life. After I read this book, I found myself thinking about one of my favorite gospel songs, Be Grateful. There is a part in the song where the lead singer says "Be Grateful because there is someone else who is worst off than you. Be Grateful because there is someone who loves to be in your shoes". I am convinced that Travis Hunter is telling men to "Be Grateful " for what you have, not what you do not have. I am further convinced that Travis Hunter is letting all men know that we are men not because we say we are men but we are men because we act like men. I challenge all men to read this book. I challenge all women to encourage all the men(sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, uncles, etc.) in their lives to read this book. Thank you, Travis Hunter for writng this book.Your book speaks truly to "The Hearts Of Men".
Rating: Summary: GREAT!!! Review: This book was reviewed by The Between the Pages book club. It received 4 out of 5 stars. Mr. Hunter had well rounded characters that all my club members could relate to. It was refreshing to her a man's point of view that was sincere and real. The story showed how differently a man views what a relationship is compared to what a woman thinks. It also showed how men deal with fatherhood, and marriage on different levels. This was a great read and is recommened highly for a different perspective on life's issues. I will read "Trouble Man" to follow the lives of the Banks men.
Rating: Summary: Men Have Hearts Too Review: This book was well thought out and put together. It shows real black men with real feelings and men who become very responsible. It also shows how single mothers can not turn little boys into men (only a REAL MAN can do that). Thanks Travis for showing us positive black male role models (especially Poppa Doc)and the influence he can have on men even if they are not his blood son. I also recommend that men as well as women read this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: 'OFF THE HOOK' Review: This one was deep it show compassion/character that some men possess.......
