Review: "The Last Confederate Flag" is the most true to life fiction I've ever read. This story, filled with memorable characters and surprise after surprise, seems more current than the daily news and more Orwellian than "1984".

I seldom read fiction and have never before looked ahead to discover what was going to happen next because I couldn't wait to find out.

This is a story about what happens when a man with principles meets those without principles in an age of political correctness and big government!

Lloyd Lenard has not only authored a riveting story about heritage, love and courage but one that has much to teach those who believe "in truth, justice and the American way."

Review: Author, WWII Veteran Lloyd E. Lenard, has written a gripping account of politically correct motivated attacks against the culture, heritage, traditions and symbols of the Old South. He is very familiar with the arguments for both sides of this controversy. He offers a compelling defense against these attacks.
The story unfolds in the ficitional Georgia City of Forrest during modern times. Southerner, Stoney Bedford, the leading character, stands in defense against efforts by those desiring to remove the Confederate flag and the General Robert E. Lee monument at city hall. Bedford's narration is an emotional roller coaster of contentment, disbelief, frustratiion, courage, anger, suspense and shock. Similar alarming scenarios are occurring all across the Southland today. This book should be considered historical fiction.
The Last Confederate Flag is recommended for mature readers desiring a more thorough understanding of both sides of the southern heritage debate, and also for those who just enjoy reading a histrionic novel.

Summary: Rousing and relevent...
Review: Lenard's Bedford reminds me somewhat of Tom Wolfe's Charlie Croker from "A Man in Full." A Southern man of tradition forced to live in a world that regards him as suspicious at best and quite possibly dangerous. Stoney Bedford's world quickly begins to unravel when he takes a stand against the removal of the Confederate Flag.

The story is a worthy read and I devoured it in about 2 days. There are a few problems which prevented me from giving it a full five stars. It needed a good editor. Some of the characters (the psychiatrist especially) spout off things in public no one would ever say. All the protagonists in the book have identical ideologies and are all a little too concerned about The War Between the States. This is fine for the main protagonist and makes him interesting and unique, but it seems stretched to have all the protagonists share his particular view. A trial in the story is referred to as Kafkaesque and Orwellian about two dozen times. There are a number of mispellings when referring to proper names (calling Kazakhstan Kazachstan, calling the Hutu tribesmen the Huttos, etc, etc). Again, nothing really bad but things a good editor would have spotted.

Nevertheless, the story itself is worth the read. Lenard has a developed gift of description. His scenes of Georgia outdoor environs are professionally done and evocative. Most of the characters are well-drawn and multi-dimensional. Their feelings and motivations translate well to the reader. Stoney Bedford comes to life with a deep history and full sense of purpose. The reader wants him to win!

It is very sad that many American's do not know their own history. And even scarier is that many will believe anything that they view on television news or newspapers.

In conclusion, I could not put this book down. A true page-turner indeed.
