Summary: Delicious!
Review: "World of Pies" begins in the year 1962 and is set mostly in the charming small town of Annette, Texas where Roxanne Milner (the book's narrator) comes of age.

It is easy to picture Annette from the author's wonderful depiction of small-town life. There is the drug store soda fountain, where you can buy the best milshakes in town, parades through the town square on the 4th of July, and fireflies that light up the sky on hot summer nights. Roxanne leads a cast of colorful characters whose lives I enjoyed being a part of for 149 pages. Her journey to adulthood is shaped by people like her cousin Tommy who ends up going off to fight in Vietnam and her father, Carl, who runs the only lingerie store in town. There's also the drifter, Mr. Fred, who Roxanne encounters during her stint as a maid at a local hotel, and Miss Swam, Annette's first mail lady, who becomes somewhat of an inspiration to Roxanne.

The book opens with Roxanne looking on as her parents gear up for the pie fair, the first in the town's history. At 12, she's anything but excited about the event. The end of this remarkable novel brings the story full-circle, but to give away anything more would be criminal. All I can say is that this is a book not to be missed. It contains all the ingrediants for a superb read!

Summary: A terrific coming of age fun and quick read
Review: All I have to say is get me some of that pie! If it wasn't for the pies, it was the story in itself. This book is so easy to relate to! It starts off with a young 12 year old, just growing out of her tomboy stage, learning how to bake a pie. The book then ends with that same girl, teaching her own dauhter how to bake a pie. The struggles with boys, pregnancy, death, crushes, money, and leaving home make this book remarkable and easy to relate to. Although, I wasn't born in the 60's life growing up now is very similar to the life depicted. Overall, I'd have to say this book was mmm mmm good!

Summary: Uninspiring
Review: Just like a slice of chocolate cream pie I devoured this book in one sitting. I LOVED IT!!!

World of Pies is the story of a young girl named Roxanne who is growing up in Annette, TX in the 1960's. We're there with her through crushes, nail polish, death, pie making, friends and into her adulthood. The book is warm, touching, funny, engaging and fast paced. You genuinely feel like you personally KNOW the characters in the book!

The author has a unique ability to build each chapter upon itself, even though they are written as vignettes. We get to know details about each character while still being a quick read.

What I also loved about this book is that the main character doesn't have a trunkfull of baggage - she's a sweet person beginning, middle and end.

One of the BEST books I've read this year!!!

Summary: Delightful and Delicious!
Review: Karen Stolz's first novel is a book of entertaining short stories with delicious recipes sandwiched in between. This is the life story of Roxanne, from her first pie contest to her first baby... Her father is the owner of Carl's Corsets, the small town's lingerie store, and her mother is a fairy tale stay at home mom. Roxanne divides her time between snooping on the town's first mail lady and playing with her cousin Tommy. It's truly a magical town, complete with a soda shop and the friendly town sheriff. All is not sunshine, though, there are enough tears to go around. If you love books by Billie Letts and Barbara Kingsolver (i.e. The Bean Trees), you will really love this novel (and don't forget to try the recipes!)...

Summary: Pumpkin?
Review: Such a heartwarming book. It starts off at the age when Roxanne is twelve. She's into baseball and not-so-into pies. She bakes a pie for the pie contest because her parents pursuade her to. The book continues on with Roxanne growing each chapter. Soon, she's found a boyfriend a year younger than her who she celebrates many "firsts" with. Her mother and father have a new baby which leaves Roxanne in surprise.

Roxanne continues to grow older, goes to college, comes back to visit her cousin who has lost his arm in the war. She has a strong bond with her cousin; lets just leave it clean and at that.

Roxanne gets married, has a lovely wedding in her small hometown. She gets homesick of being in the populated busy state, and yearns to live in the cracker country of home. Places such as Carl's Corsets (her father's lingerie store) and the Cafe just wouldn't be the same.

I really enjoyed this book; it gave me happy little feelings inside. I reccomend this quick read to anyone of any age. It will make you smile, remember on the good innocent years, and laugh.

Summary: Def yummy!!
Review: This book was a wonderful read! I enjoyed the pace it went at and loved living in this little pie world she had created. Have yet to try the recipes but the frozen salad is on the top! Some places the story skips but I would recommend this book and look forward to seeing more by this author!

Summary: Take a Vacation From Fast-Paced Living in WORLD OF PIES
Review: This is a book to sit back and relax with and not worry about the ending or the plot. It's a book to live in and experience small town life at it's best. Bake pies for the pie fair with your mother. Romanticize the life of the mail lady and peek in her windows to see how she lives. Help your dad run his lingerie store. Go out to the lake to make out with the guy that runs the drugstore's soda fountain. Develop a crush on your cousin (after all, it's a small town and there's not much to choose from). And move back to the small town to raise your family because you relish the simplicity of a life where you know everyone in town.

Each chapter of the book represents a different stage in Roxanne's life. You watch her grow up, go to college, get married, and move back to Annette, Texas. The book is thin and just right for a short weekend vacation inside your own mind. The characters are all three-dimensional and memorable. It's a sweet and pleasurable book that even has home cooking dessert recipes at the end.

Summary: Small Town Southern Living
Review: This was a refreshing read. I really enjoy light southern living books, and this one was great. I liked how each chapter was a different summer in Roxannes' life, starting at age twelve, and ending with her in her forties. For such a little book (only 10 short chapters), I felt like I'd read about Roxies entire life! A great read if your looking for something light and quick.
