Rating: Summary: Criticism at its best--illuminating and appreciative Review: Helen Vendler writes clearly and with great affection about Wallace Stevens, a difficult and rewarding poet. This short book will open many doors in Stevens, and inspire further appreciation of his work on the part of the reader.
Rating: Summary: Astute, astonishing essays on Wallace Stevens Review: The great poetry critic, Helen Vendler has done it again with her book of essays on the poetry of Wallace Stevens. Insightfully, astutely, and passionately, Ms. Vendler speaks of Stevens's word choices, and how they helped him create great poetry .... she talks some about the man himself ... his misery, and his desire ...And, she analyzes several of his poems to great illumination and great effect. I especially enjoyed her discussions of Stevens's later poems, "The River of Rivers in Connecticut," and "The Palm at End of the Mind." This is fabulous prose on Stevens's poetry, and on Stevens, and it is lovingly and meticulously paid out with balance, careful thought, and boundless enthusiasm! This is a great book of essays on poetry, and I recommend it to everybody.
