Constantly bumming a place to sleep of someone they know, or the guy that Kate's mom is currently involved with, they seem to never unpack their bags. In order for the invisible realm of the Seelie court to survive another 7 years, she must make a choice between to the people who have befriended her and protected her for so long, or save herself.
Every seven years, a mortal girl must be sacrificed to keep the Seelie Court free and the Unseelie Court in bondage. Kate has known the fey since she was seven, but how could they have kept this from her? Nothing is what it seems and what seems to have meaning, means nothing. With riddles that will make you silly with laughter, and a bit of a romance for wishing that you could have that too, Tithe combines all the elements that are necessary for a classic fairy tale with the modern language and technology of today
Weather it is the enrapturing descriptive of a world we would have never known without the help of author Holly Black that capture you from page one, or the logic that this war in a parallel universe is happening all around us, this book is sure to keep you wanting more. And if you do, don't fret for the sequel to Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale comes out Summer 2005. Sources say that the sequel is supposedly to be as good, if not better, than the first. I know I'll be reading it the day it hits shelves this summer.
Rating: Summary: Tithe, How I love it. Review: It was so good to be able to breathe, Kaye thought. She loved the serene brutality of the ocean, loved the electric power she felt with each breathe of wet, briny air. She spun again, dizzily, not caring that her skirt was flying up over the tops of her black thigh-high stockings.
"Come on ," Janet called..."your going to fall"
Tithe is about a girl named Kaye whose mom is in rock band until one of the members gets drunk and arrested. Then she and her mom have to move in with Kaye's grandmother. While there she hangs out with her friend Janet who takes her to a bar to meet her boyfriend and one of their old classmates. Kaye goes down to the basement and then the trouble starts. Janet's boyfriend sees her making a stuffed nonliving horse move. She didn't even realize it was moving. Then all he can think about is Kaye and starts calling her constantly.
Holly Black has written a series called the spiderwick chronicles. It is a fiction series that I'm sure is great but have not read. Tithe is the only other book she has written. She spent her early years in a decaying Victorian mansion where her mother fed her a steady diet of ghost stories and faerie tales. An avid collector of rare folklore volumes, spooky dolls, and crazy hats, she lives in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

Rating: Summary: An AWSOME book! Review: First of all, I would love to say that I love faeries! But after I read this book, it totally twisted my imaganation of them! I encouraged all my friends to read it, who felt the same way about it as me, just to tell you...I have read it seven times, and counting, it is one of my all time favorite books. It is mainly about a girl, Kaye, who travels around with her mother's rock band. After her mother's boyfriend tries to kill her, they move back to New Jersey, where Kaye's 'imaganary' friends return to her and tell her that she is a pixie. She saves a knight, Roiben *drools*. Kaye become a sacrifice to the UnSeelie court, when Roiben and her imaganary friends, Spike and Lutie-Loo, save her. Roiben and Kaye fall in love, and that is pretty much the end. I am really yearning for a sequal, because it ended too soon! *crys* It is probably my favorite book, besides the swearing, violence (which in all fairness was pretty awsome) and some sexual content, it is an awsome book for reluctant high school readers.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely loved it Review: I came across Tithe in the local library, the book stuffed behind three other books on one of the highest shelves. The summary had been scratched off, so I read the first page. I was not immediately hooked, but that was soon to change. I began reading the book on the way home and as soon as I met the daring Roiben, I was hooked.
Holly Black is not afraid to write out scenes that would actually take place with teens, unlike some other authors. She knows how Kaye would react to a drunken mother and over-protective grand mother.
I just finished the book and I have added it to my Christmas Wish-List. I love the book. It's as simple as that. I wouldn't change a thing about it. Well .. I'd change one thing. More Roiben. :)
Rating: Summary: Oh my god - Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale - the best!******* Review: I thought that this was a great book. If you are into the whole faerie thing, or even if you aren't, you will like this book. it's really exciting and i loved it.
there's some romance in there too - not the sappy kind
whether u go for the hard core punk faerie book, or the pretty little faerie book, you should definitely like it.
Rating: Summary: more like 10 stars! I couldnt put it down! Review: I'm VERY picky about books, but this one was totally worth reading! l read it in 4 days (which is really amazing considering how slow i read) It's not one of those goody-goody faery tales, it's really dark and different. It's really dramatic. It's not like one of those books where you have to wait for the boring parts to get over with until you get to the exciting parts, the whole thing is exciting! If you dont buy it here, go out and rent it from the library or something, even if your not a big fantasy fan, read it cuz its more than worth reading.
Rating: Summary: There are better choices Review: If you want to read a terrific tale of faerie unleased on a modern world, read War for the Oaks by Emma Bull. Raymond Feist has another option, but I've forgotten the title. This book is a huge disappointment. I bought it based on a student's recommendation and was heartily dismayed at its sophomoric style and content.
Rating: Summary: "Tithe"-A Modern...Miracle Review: Just recently have I gotten back into the good habit of reading. Somehow my sister seems to find the best picks out there so I leave it up to her to find books. When she confronted me with "Tithe" I was very interested. Reading into it I found myself completley indulged in this book asking, "Want to read another chapter?" It was brilliantly written and I love the fact that the 'typical teenager' is not portrayed in this reading. The book brings wonderful images to your mind as you go through the text and pretty soon you create almost a perfect little world. The descriptions really give you the feel of what everything is like going on through there. When my sister and I would describe to eachother how we thought the settings looked we ended up having a pretty similar image in our minds. That's all in the greatness of the details. I don't just want to know that something is there, I want to know exactly its' position (which is what this book offers). I found that I couldn't put it down and am now regainging my faith in reading. It brings a wonderful balance of what it is like to be a teen with all the feelings that come with being an adult. It deals with love, fear, curiosity, and the dark aspects of life. This dark, dramatic book is great for the struggling teens, the 'gawthic' underground, and for even just those fantasy lovers. This is a must read!
Rating: Summary: Coming of age tale getting stale.... Review: The theme is common: hard-bitten young girl on the edge of society, in this case a 16 year old daughter of a rock musician who smokes her breakfast named Kaye, who discovers who's not really human. In fact, she's a pixie. And, she's pivotal in the next war between the Seelie and Unseelie Court. Emma Bull did a much more original rendition in "War for the Oaks" and I think it may be more appropriate for the younger audiences recommended than "Tithe"
