Rating: Summary: Captivating Review: Never before has a book allowed me to see the true nature of the pioneers. Gerald Lunds description and story line allowed me to feel as though I was right with the Martin Handcart company. His descriptions and historical clarity allowed me to know that all their sacrifices were not in vain. This book has helped me understand the true nature of the Fire and the Covenant.
Rating: Summary: A Mormon fairy tale of tragic proportions Review: The reality of the Willie and Martin Handcart Companies is that the Mormon church allowed them to begin their journey with green wood carts which disintegrated along the travels. While the carts allowed the emmigrants from Europe a total of 17 pounds of goods at the beginning of the trip--the individuals were soon faced with little or no food. The emigrants were not funded at the same level as other Morman wagon trains and handcart companies of the time. Then at Fort Caspar the Mormon leaders, who were herding these emigrants to the Kingdom of God, make the decision to cross Wyoming in October. A month known for its horrific blizzards and adverse weather. These emigrants who were to be baptized in Salt Lake were trapped and left to die by the Mormon leadership as they felt that both handcart companies were not worthy of utilizing funds to keep them at Fort Caspar. The Mormons staged a half hearted attempt to rescue the companies but when you realize the true numbers which died at both sites, you understand that it was simply a public relations stunt. To add insult to injuty, these emigrants were then baptized in 2000...the church just overlooked this fact until they made the Willie's Handcart location a desert theme park. My true rating for this fairy tale is a -1 star. Know the truth...Brigham Young often bragged that "We have the greatest and smoothes liars in the world." A demonstrated fact even today.
Rating: Summary: fire of the covenant Review: This is an amazing book for all readers to read. It will make yoy laugh and cry! Lund puts you right there in the heart of history! This book is amazing 100 times over!
Rating: Summary: Captivating Review: What an amazing talent Gerald Lund has in his ability to merge historical events with the inclusion of fictional characters. Although this book's several pages can intimidate even the stoutest of novelists, I found myself unable to put it down as I moved from one chapter to the next. I found myself being pulled into the story and truly feeling what it must have been like crossing the unsettled West as a Mormon Pioneer. On more than one occasion I was actually brought to tears. If you read this book, prepare yourself for some late night reading sessions.

Rating: Summary: Wonderfully woven novel of fact and fiction Review: When I started the novel, I was a bit overwhelmed by its length. But as I began to turn the pages, I was quickly enveloped into the amazing tale of the trials, bravery, and faithful diligence of the members of the Martin and Willie handcart companies. Gerald N. Lund paints a vivid portrayal of their struggles that stimulates the mind, pulls at the heart and envigorates the spirit.... 5 stars!
