Rating: Summary: My 1st review at Amazon.... Review: I read a great deal. From mystery to history to Science fiction to westerns to fantasy to just about anything... I have a fiction addiction..
That said..a Johnstone book is always a fun way to pass the time.. This is the first of a new series that springs out of the end of Johnstone's Ashes series... It's after a massive plague has killed most of humanity and Mountain Man comes out of the moutains to save humanity..
It's dark and broody, action filled, full of Mr. Johnstone's preaching about hope(one of the reasons to read a Johnstone book,IMO), freedom and responsiblity... If you like his other books ..you'll like this..don't look for major literature..it's just good old fashioned rip roaring mind candy...and that's what I want when I pick up one of his "end of the world books"..
His weterns, however...are far more to my taste when I want something deeper and better than simple mind candy..
All in all a fun read of a couple of hours...not a bad way to spend a cold rainy day.
Rating: Summary: Ghost written claptrap Review: I was never a huge fan of William Johnstone's right-wing fantasies but I read a few of his early Ashes books when I was younger that I liked and still have fond memories of.
I am aware that he turned over the later Ashes novels to ghost-writers and that the Last Rebel spin-off was completely ghosted.
Like the Deathlands series published by Gold Eagle, it seems the publishers found a writer who doesn't care much about the continuity of Johnstone's previous books and can write only the most basic bare bones plots and characters.
The book is also written on a third grade level. Nobody could ever accuse the Ashes series of appealing to the high IQ type, but Last Rebel seems geared for an audience whose last reading experiences were with the adventures of Curious George!
I had hoped the spin-off of Ashes would be better than the last few years of that series but instead it's worse--if that's possible. This is my first and only experience with The Last Rebel.Give me the worst of Gold Eagle's OUTLANDERS series any day of the week!
Rating: Summary: Keep your money... Review: Like in the last books of "The Ashes" series Mr. Johnstone has decided to include modern day events that did not happen in the timeline (ie: Iraq).
This series has a main character just like Ben, always hooking up with a lady. I could have predicted that. I could also predict that the first group of Rebels Jim came into contact with think Jim thinks like Ben.
It appears that Mr. Johnstone has decided to write a book, and perhaps a series, for the mere sake of making money. I think you are better off keeping your money and spending it elsewhere.
