Rating: Summary: Delightful Time Trip Review: As an author of a time-travel book myself, I'm familiar with the amazing potential that time travel offers to a story. There is potential for the speculative application of philosophy, religion, and science. There is the potential for plot-twists and surprises. There is also the potential for pure confusion and, as a result, unreadable stories. Timecross'd accomplishes the first two, and escapes the third, in an action-packed time adventure that is both fun and exciting. I recommend it highly. The story involves the aptly named "loop" -- a time machine which is the temporal equivalent to the portal in the movie "Stargate" -- which is used effectively to create "loops" in the plot's timeline. The love story is always present, though it often takes a back seat as the characters involved forget their emotions in an effort to focus on survival. This book has everything from nazis to Shakespeare, however, and despite what you are looking for in a book, there is a good chance you will find it here. The only thing that I felt was out of place was a slightly awkward love scene in pre-history. Overall, the story progressed rapidly and kept the reader interested in the delightfully dysfunctional cast. I also feel that the subtitle and cover detract somewhat from the quality of the book. I had passed this book up on several occasions because the cover gave the impression of a romantic comedy. After seeing that several readers recommended my own book "Out of Place Out of Time" in addition to Timecross'd, I picked it up and was delightfully surprised to find a thoughtful and adventurous story that offers far more.
Rating: Summary: I wish I had my own Loop!!! Review: I goofed. I recently reviewed Timecross'd after reading less than half of the book (I'll never ever do that again). The story just wasn't engaging me that much, so I put the book away and moved on to other things, after writing a lukewarm review on Amazon. But apparently I was destined to read Timecross'd. A few days later, I found myself in the local hospital emergency room having an apparent heart attack. It turned out that I was not having a heart attack, but the doctor kept me in the hospital for a couple of days while they ran every medical test in the book (bottom line: my heart is fine, but it looks like I may be getting a stomach ulcer). I had gone to the hospital very early in the morning, and once it was clear that I wasn't in danger but that they were keeping me overnight, my wife went home to get some of my things. She mistakenly picked up Timecross'd, not realizing that I wasn't reading it anymore. So I started reading Timecross'd to pass the time between giving the vampire nurses several quarts of my blood to drink or whatever the heck they do with it. A funny thing happened then. I started enjoying the book. About halfway through the book, there's a major shift in the story line, one that makes more sense and explains some of the earlier action that I didn't like. After I escaped from the hospital, I returned home and finished the book.
It's really a very good and very original story. The Loop is an incredible invention for time travel, and I found myself constantly daydreaming about when and where I would travel if I had the Loop (first stop would be 1976 to talk myself out of marrying my first wife, then maybe on to Gettysburg in 1863 to give Robert E. Lee a little hindsight advice about getting those Yankees off Cemetery Ridge). Timecross'd is based on the idea that you can loop back in time and start a new timeline from there and alter history from that point forward. Sean Thompson, the author, does a wonderfully imaginative job with this premise. The story is sometimes a bit confusing, but that's because it's confusing to Abby, the main character, as she tries to decipher what's going on and gradually realizes that someone else is using the Loop for their own purposes.
So I really enjoyed Timecross'd. Fortunately, I was able to delete my earlier review and post this one. And I'll never review a book again without finishing it first.
Rating: Summary: Editor knows best! Review: It was a pleasure to work with Sean Thompson on this novel. Timecross'd is a fun, adventure-filled book that contains great humor and nevertheless causes you to stop and think about the choices you make in life and the consequences that can arise from the path you choose. Timecross'd offers something for every reader: boot-stomping action, drama, love, mystery, philosophy, hard science, history, and more all wrapped up into one neat package! The solid plot will keep you on your toes and turning the pages until late into the night. You don't want to miss this one!
Rating: Summary: Loved this book! Review: Not being a hardcore sci-fi reader, I was afraid this one would be over my head or not hold my interest. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! I was drawn in by the characters almost immediately. They were actually realistic! The story was great and I especially enjoyed the narrator's dry humor. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in sci-fi(where the author holds his own quite well without being boring) to romance and just plain good fiction.
