Rating: Summary: Yes! Read this book! Review: "The Joyous Season" is pee-your-pants funny. I am thrilled to see it, along with other books by Patrick Dennis, back in print.
Rating: Summary: precocious wit! Review: I always read 5 star reviews with a healthy dose of skepticism. But this definitely earns its stars. I started and finished the book in one day--I couldn't put it down, it was just so good! This book depicts that Manhattanite mid-century lifestyle to perfection and with much hilarity. It is rare to find a book told from the perspective of a child that is believeable and wise. A little reminiscent of some of my favorites: "Harriet the Spy," "Metropolitan" and "Tadpole".
Rating: Summary: The Joyous Season Review: I do so love this book! I first read it in high school, in the '60's, and currently own a very bedraggled paper back copy acquired in a used bookstore in Cambridge Ma, in 1970...my husband has read it several times and I have lost count of the number of times I have read it. Why oh why has this not been made into a movie or stage play? I have "cast" this movie in my mind so many times...with movie actors, TV actors, soap actors, etc. I recommend this book to everyone, and once you get it, don't let it get away!!! It is my annual cheer up read! No one else has mentioned "How Firm a Foundation", a delightful sendup of "family trusts" .....
Rating: Summary: 25 Years Later, I's Still Laughing Review: I read this book for the first time in high school, over 25 years ago (Go ahead-- do the math) Over time my paperback copy split down the middle, and I lost half. BUT, this is the one book I could recite in a Farenheit 451 world. I can still recall passages that had tears rolling down my cheeks. Because of this book I went on to Tony and Little Me (both by Patrick Dennis-- he of Auntie Mame fame) It's a book I search for in used bookstores and garage sales.Kerry ("That's an e and two r's, not a c and an a, fer chrissake!!) is this delicious blend of Manhattan sophisto-kid and ten-year-old naif. It's through his eyes that we view the actions of all the adults around him, and they don't come off too well. He's part child and part con-man, and his sister, Missy, is no slouch, either. This book is pure joy. Be sure to read it either when you're alone or when you're around people who don't worry about you when you burst into guffaws. It's been my little treasure for 25 years, and I'm delighted to know there are others who have discovered it and treasure it, too.
Rating: Summary: Funniest Book I Have Ever Read Review: I still have the book I originally purchased in 1964 and it remains the funniest book I have ever read. I still laugh out loud when I read it, which to me, is the true test of real comedy.
Rating: Summary: I'm not alone in my enthusiasm/quest for this wonderful book Review: I've been looking for a copy of this book for years, with no success. I first found the book at the library, being a Patrick Dennis fan already. I agree, it is one of the funniest books ever written! At one point I even considered checking the book out, and then telling them I'd lost it and paying the fine. However, ethics (or cowardice) prevailed. I no longer live near that library, so temptation is out of the way. Just reading the reviews at this site have brought some of my favorite parts of the book back to mind. I find that books written from a child's perspective are usually a wonderful read. Please, P-L-E-A-S-E republish this book! Has any publisher ever put out a complete anthology of Dennis's works? I'd buy it
Rating: Summary: The Funniest Novels ever written Review: It is way past time for some smart publisher to reprint all of Mr. Tanner's wonderful, deliciously funny and socially insightful novels. I have read almost all of them over and over starting at age 12. Fortunately my sweet Mother thought he was a genius and always bought the hardcover editions when they were published so I inherited a treasure trove of all 16. I feel sorry for all the readers who haven't had the opportunity to enjoy these gems of witty dialogue and keen character study. Patrick Dennis is a social commentator on the manners and morals of our generation of the first order. These are without doubt the funniest novels ever written in the English language. There are 16 different novels written under a variety of pseudonyms. All are a delight. To learn more about the divine Mr. Dennis read Eric Myers " Uncle Mame " and read about the real life-is-as-interesting-as-fiction life of Edward Everett Tanner.
Rating: Summary: On Your Must List Review: It's been a long, long time since I first read this novel (mid-60s), but one thing has always remained clear -- I laughed out loud -- again, and again, and again, and ....If you've never read a Patrick Dennis novel, it doesn't matter where you begin. Read one and you'll want to read them all.
Rating: Summary: Looking for Joy Review: Lost my dear old copy, and would love to know if anyone out there has a copy. Why does the publisher not reprint...time for a Dennis revival.
Rating: Summary: A great Christmas Read!! Review: Patrick Dennis is a genius - in fact, I'd recommend another of his books, "Genius", too!! I've read and re-read "A joyous Season" a number of times, and can't recommend it more highly. The laughs start on just about page one, and keep on until the last sentence. Kerry and Missy are a great team, and the two grandmothers, each so very different, make for a great intergenerational contest. I've been looking for a new copy for some time, and would love to see it re-released! If you see it, buy it!!
