Rating: Summary: A great book from the series Review: I thought it was so cool how the South American nations are getting involved in the war with US Allies Chile and Paraguay battling pro british Argentina. I think the war ultimately depend on which side Brazil chooses which will leave it as a power by not being in the war early on.
Rating: Summary: Another 5 starrer from Harry Review: If you like H. Turtledove, you will, of course, read his latest. If you don't like him, then you are out of luck. If you haven't read him, read one and you'll be hooked. So...get hooked....
Rating: Summary: Prose so-so but story line well thought out, logical Review: Most of the time Mr. Turtledove holds my interest and keeps my sympathies with his characters. Once in a while his prose gets in the way but I cannot put the book down. It is a guilty pleasure for someone, like me, that reads alot of history. He has one problem, military courtesy has a Lieutenant Colonel addressed as "Colonel" not "Lieutenant-Colonel". Every time that occurrs in his text it puts me off. But nontheless, Harry has captured the grity texture of a WWI era war between the states. His characterizations of real people, T.R. Roosevelt and George Custer are a bit thin sometimes but still, he brings believeable elements of their commonly known characteristics in to the story and it moves along. At a ripping good clip at that.
Rating: Summary: Excellent - what might have been! Review: Again, Turtledove does an excellent job of presenting an alternate history. Amazing to think it all turned on one event as presented in "How Few Remain." From the small amount I know of how the USA and CSA saw each other during the US Civil War (War of Secession in this series - I guess it's true that the victors write the history!) this is very plausible as to how the two countries would have dealt with each other. As a Canadian, I somehow find myself rooting for the CSA even though I hate what it stood for. As portrayed in both books of the Great War series, we Canadians are just as patriotic as you Americans, we just don't show it as overtly. Even though it's fiction, it just goes to show how war makes strange bedfellows. I too can't wait for the next book in the series, and I can't wait to see how the borders will have been redrawn again after the conclusion. I just hope that Turtledove continues this series through to World War II (likely to have happened inevitably no matter who won WWI) and even into the 50's and 60's and the civil rights movement. Just how might things have been different. I must disagree with others who found the pace slow - WWI was slow and this comes across well in this book. I don't think there are too many characters, and they could be developed more, but each book, they are more fleshed out. Please, Harry - give us the next one soon!
Rating: Summary: Worth The Wait Review: I've been waiting what what seems like forever for the next book in Turtledove's Great War series. I believe it was worth the wait. I couldn't put this one down and finished it it record time. A totaly believable plot and characters. Only problem now is that I've now got to wait for the next one!
Rating: Summary: Excellent despite character glut Review: Books concerning 20th Century military history fascinate me, this year has been kind--with great new books like 'The First World War', and fiction like "War of the Rats" and "The Triumph & Glory" [these are WWII] ---so I was thrilled to discover the latest Turtledove effort was out. "The Great War: Walk in Hell" is much better than "How Few Remain" and "American Front", although, as is the case in most of Turtledove's books, there are a lot of characters to try and keep track of. That can get tedious. But the good far outweighs the bad, this is a solid 4 star book, I enjoyed it very much.
Rating: Summary: Walk In Heaven; The End Of Alternate History Review: This is the end of a genre! Alternate history will never be the same again after Turtledove's books, and thank God for that. With Dr. Turtledove you have a felling of credibility in what he writes. I agree, there may be minor lapses, but no big ones, as in many other alternate history books. Now, this is how it ends. With Britain committed to defending Canada and keeping the CSA afloat, Germany will win, at the latest when the Kaiserschlacht comes along in the Spring of 1918. There will be no American forces and not enough British ones to deal with the Germans freed from the Eastern Front. So, how does it fell, America? You will rule the world along with Kaiser Bill!
Rating: Summary: Excellent, fun to read. I can't wait for the rest. Review: I love alternate history and this series on WW1 is excellent. I especially like the way Turtledove weaves in many different characters. At this stage I can only guess as to the outcome of the war but I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Rating: Summary: Better than the first volume, but still slow moving. Review: I have to admit I was underwhelmed with the first volume, but this second installment is much better. I think that the number of characters is still to large and there are a number of implausible events and strategic circumstances. (Living up here in North Dakota, I can't believe the USA hasn't taken Winnipeg in two years. After all, its only 80 miles from the US border across some of the flattest and most wide open terrain in the world!)That said, this book and series is a rip roaring yarn. Just be ready to suspend some disbelief. AND THE USA BETTER WIN!
Rating: Summary: Best book out there Review: my favort writer Harry turtledove has done it again! this is one of the best books i've read. its a must!
