Summary: I wasn't impressed
Review: I am absolutely amazed at the positive reviews this book has received. I found the book tedious and the theme of 'love triangle' boring. The characters had very little character. I can't care about a coke-snorting, self-absorbed thirty-something and Jane did little for me either. Carey, instead of committing suicide, should have found someone more worthy of his love. I wonder why this author decided on the topic. He certainly too many pages to it. It is obvious I didn't enjoy this whiney book.

Summary: My all- time favorite book!
Review: I bought this book at a garage sale when I was thirteen. I have read it every year since then. It still has profound meaning for me as an adult. It is about the beautiful relationship between three friends, each with their own story, each forced to live with the decisions that they make. It is the story of love, and ultimately, hope. "Early From the Dance" is a rare find. Enjoy!

Summary: All These Years...
Review: I first read this book when I was barely out of my teens and I can tell you each and every place I occupied while turning these pages. It is a book that has stayed with me and haunts me often in my wondering whatever became of A.

I, too, as another reviewer, cannot journey a bookstore without browsing the shelf where I find this author and always, always hope he will have published something new and memorable since my last visit.

A must read for real readers - an excellent travel/beach/late night with the flu book! Get it!

Summary: My All Time Favorite...
Review: I have purchased so many copies of this book to give as gifts, that I keep my local bookstore in business. I feel honored and priviliged to have been able to read this book. I read it when it first came out, and immediately felt it far surpassed "The Prince of Tides." It is truly a brilliant book. To all those who have yet to read it. `You are in for a wonderful treat.

Summary: Read 3 times and always entertained & find something new
Review: I have read this book 3 times and love it. I want to read MORE novels by David Payne. I am eagerly awaiting a new novel. I will be the first in line. True and very realistic of becoming an early adult, love and tribulations. I value this book and will always keep it in my collection.

Summary: Top Ten
Review: I have read thousands of fiction books in my life, and can honestly say (though I have nothing in common with these white, Southern, American characters) that this is in the top ten, of the best books I have ever read. Few pieces of fiction have ever emotionally moved me as much.

Summary: The first section of the book kept me riveted
Review: I read this book several years ago, but it made quite an impression on me (obviously or I wouldn't be writing this so much later) The first section was so intensely moving it was at once nearly unbearable and impossible to put down (at one point I hid it under my desk and pretended to work while reading). Unfortunately, I didn't feel the last two sections lived up to the first. I passed the book on to several friends, because I HAD to have someone to talk to about the book, and they both had the same reaction. One friend called me the day after I gave it to him out of the blue to thank me for passing it on, but by the time he finished he felt let down.

I can't say enough that the first section at least partially makes up for anything lacking in the rest of the book and highly reccomend reading the whole thing to anyone. To this day just thinking about this book brings back intense emotions!

Summary: A timeless masterpiece...
Review: I was fortunate enough to stumble on this book shortly after it was published. Since then I have read it several times and have passed it on, purchased it for friends, and generally reveled in the riveting tale and superb prose. Segments read like romantic poetry. It evokes that special time in everyone's life when romance is all and all things seem possible. David Payne is an incredibly talented writer with the rare gift of being able to tear your heart out with a phrase. I admired his talent when I discovered him. I admire it even more now. Read it. You will cherish the experience.

Summary: A powerful, must read book by a major new talent.
Review: I was privledged enough to be able to read this book when it was first released a few years ago. I have read it three times since then, and I still cannot fully describe how much it moves me. David Payne has written a brilliant, powerful book that may very well be the "Catcher in the Rye" of its generation. This is a must read for all fans of great Southern writers, but should, by no means, be limited to this group. This book is a treasure...

Summary: Wordy but fascinating
Review: I was transported by this densely-written book (literally, I started it on a 15-hour plane trip).I'm a grandmother now, but I know precisely what those characters' feelings are (were) like, and I can see similar life's experiences testing the second and third generation in my own family. A novel that reveals real life and real people to readers in a universal way is a novel that deserves to be re-read. Trouble is, my daughter took it off me and so it remains on the other side of the world! Highly recommended.
