Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've read in a while! Review: I got this book so I would have something to do at a family gathering. I didn't put it down until I finished it. I never guessed how good this book would be. A great surprise!
Rating: Summary: Too formulaic to really grip Review: Freedman writes better than most of his rivals - especially the legal thriller authors, many of whom rarely rise above cardboard where the characters are concerned - but I found I could see where this story was going to easily to fast. Why? Because I could sense the author setting up his 'surprises'. They don't spring lifelike from the grain of what the story is about. They're simply assembled - albeit quite well.
Rating: Summary: Move over Grisham! Here comes Freedman Review: This is one of the best books that I have read in some time. I found this book more thrilling then some of John Grhisham books. The plot of this story has so many twist and turns that your not exactly sure who did it until the end. Read it today!
Rating: Summary: A "couldn't put it down" book! Review: "The Disappearance" held my interest from start to finish. Nothing was predictable, yet neither was any of it unbelievable. This, in my opinion, is the true mark of a great "who dunnit." I "happened" upon this book and can't wait to read Freedman's other books. I would suggest that the many readers who read Grisham's latest book and thought it was pretty terrible - as I did - give Freedman a try. "The Disappearance" is a much better read than even the best of Grisham.
Rating: Summary: A fun, suspenseful read with well developed characters. Review: Having read a House of Smoke, I knew what Freedman's writing style was and wanted more. The Disappearance has wonderfully developed characters and an excellent plot that keeps the reader interested and enthusiastic. Somewhat disappointing are the trial chapters. Luke, the primary character, does not come across as the super-sharp lawyer you were lead to believe he is. The dialog of the trial itself does not hold the same level of excitement and suspense that the rest of the book contains, and is somewhat anticlimatic. Despite some shortcomings, I would highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Another Top-Notch Legal Thriller from Freedman! Review: For once I agree with a review written by Harriet Klausner andHarstan Finder has written another very engrossing legalthriller. Well-developed characters, fast-paced plot, realistic dialogue, lots of surprises, etc. A worthy successor to Against The Wind and Key Witness (although I enjoyed both of these slightly more).
Rating: Summary: Another Winner! Review: What a wonderful addition to J.F. Freedman's growing legacy. Strong characterizations and a riveting plot combine to suck you into the fast-paced whirlpool of deceit and deceptions. I read this book non-stop and anxiously look forward to Freedman's next!
Rating: Summary: Another good thriller by this talented writer Review: Looking back on his career as the superstar of the Santa Barbara District Attorney's office, Luke Garrison realizes that he once placed his media clippings above justice. He remains haunted by one case in particular in which his ruthlessness condemned an innocent man to the gallows. That case and a divorce has led him to seek penance in the Northern California forests. Three years have passed since he left Southern California. Luke is surprised when retired Judge Ferdinand De La Guerra comes traipsing north to ask him to defend a suspect in what is a highly visible, open and shut case. Luke reluctantly agrees to defend Joe Allison, who is accused of abducting and killing fourteen-year old Emma Lancaster. Luke sees the case as a personal catharsis that will enable him to reclaim his own self worth. However, as he seeks the truth, he also thinks his client either did the dastardly deed or is hiding something even more nightmarish. J.F. Freedman is one of the top writers of legal thrillers, renowned for his sizzling one-sitting page turners. His current novel is incredibly chilling as the gifted writer builds up the suspense surrounding THE DISAPPEARANCE and subsequent murder of a teenage girl. Due to the author's immense talent, a seemingly unlikeable snot like Luke actually garners reader empathy when he battles his personal demons in order to do the right thing. The crisp story line is filled with pathos and grit as fans of the sub-genre will believe that this novel is the legal thriller of the season if not the year. Mr. Freedman's novels are consistently top entertainment. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Freedman is on my list of authors to read! Review: Wow, this was a really good book. I enjoyed it very much. I got it from my dad, who happened to pick it up at a used book store and read it & passed it on. I definately have Freedman on my fav. authors list now. This book was perfectly paced. I liked the way the story evolved and things slowly crept out. It was a surprise ending for me.
Rating: Summary: A summer read, but nothing more Review: There were more holes in the story than in swiss cheese. If you bother to think about things, not much of it makes sense. Only one character--Riva--is fully drawn. The rest are very one dimentional. That said, the story moves along. If you're looking for a good read, this is it. If you're looking for a great book, this is not.
