Rating: Summary: Well... I've read better. Review: This is the first book I picked up by Mr. Deaver and as soon as I got to the checkout line, people who saw the book said "he's really good!" Then another person tells me that he's the guy who wrote the book that became the movie, The Bone Collecter. Now that impressed me as the movie was definitely well made. With high expectations I delved into it, only to be sadly disappointed. While the premise is exciting and there are twists in the tale, the characters are cliches and the story rambles at every opportunity it gets. No doubt the author is a good writer as it shows on occasion, but this book was a major disappointment. While I was reading it people asked me if this book was any good and when I said "not really" I was informed that I should read his earlier works which are supposed to be "very good." Uh... no thanks, I'll skip.
Rating: Summary: once, twice, three times a brilliant thriller Review: It's 9 AM on New Year's Eve when a killer known as The Digger enters a Washington DC subway station and fires a silenced machine gun into the crowd, killing many, and then escapes in the confusion caused by his crime. Shortly after, the Mayor's office receives a note... $20 million must be paid or even more killing will occur, at 4 PM, 8 PM, and midnight, each massacre occurring in a similarly crowded location... The ransom is left at the place instructed, yet no one comes to collect it. Then, a hit-and-run victim is identified as the mastermind behind the operation, and all of a sudden there is no way of stopping the crazed gunman from killing again, and again, and again... All the FBI has to go on in the note, so they call in the help of Parker Kincaid, a retired forensic document examiner, supposed to be seeing the New Year in with his kids. At first he refuses, but then a change of heart brings him into the investigation and closer to pure psychotic madness than he has ever before been... This is yet another fantastic novel from Jeffery Deaver, packed full of surprises and brilliant characters. (Lincoln Rhyme even makes a brief appearance!) Deaver's plot moves at brilliant pace, and it's fiendishly clever and wholly exciting. It may not be incredibly believable, but I don't read his books because they're realistic. I read them because I know that I will be treated to a completely engrossing, shocking, roller-coaster-ride of a thriller that never slows down right to the final pages (besides, when reading of acts of atrocious murder, it is not comforting to think "wow, this is realistic!"). And with The Devil's Teardrop, Deaver delivers the goods in spades. The book has more twists than the Gordion Knot. Indeed, the final fifty pages contain more action and surprises than most 400+ page novels. The Devil's Teardrop is a book I would unhesitatingly recommend to any thriller fan, as would I almost any book by Jeffery Deaver. He is one of the few writers who supply EVERYTHING I require in a book, and this is one guaranteed to keep you awake until the small hours.
Rating: Summary: Death in The City Review: The Devil's Teardrop is another of Jeffery Deavers masterfully written novels. It is packed with twists and turns that always keep you guessing. He is not one of the boring mystery novelists that give away the solution in the first line. No, Deaver somehow always manages to completely turn the tables just when you think you have the plot figured out. The Devil's Teardrop is about a madman set loose on the streets of D.C. He moves through the throngs of holiday shoppers with his silenced uzi. Every two hours firing a ferocious volley into the merry shoppers without a care as to who is struck by the madly flying bullets. With the recent events in Maryland, having the snipers shooting people in cold blood and at random, Jeffery Deavers book takes on a whole new meaning and an entirely different dimension of "scary". While reading this book the realization came to me that no matter what you are doing or where you are there is always the unpredictable in our society. The unknown can be lurking and waiting to come out and snare you from the comforts of your everyday routines and change your life to something you never imagined it could be.
Rating: Summary: AvidReader Review: I loved this book! The back cover didn't intrigue me. The author's name was the reason I purchased it. I was sitting at the Cleveland Clinic waiting for my husband to get out of surgery and needed something to occupy my time. The twists and the unexpected were a wild roller coaster ride that kept me hooked . . . I couldn't put it down! Read it!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Twist In the Plot Review: THE DEVIL'S TEARDROP AUTHOR: JEFFERY DEAVER PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades BOOK REVIEW: Once again, Jeffery Deaver writes a great book with an unexpected twist for an ending. It is the Christmas Season and Parker Kincaid only wants to celebrate in peace with his son and daughter. But his ex-wife plans to contest custody of their children and the City of Washington, D.C. is going to need his forensic expertise. As the country's top forensic document examiner, Parker will be pulled from retirement against his will to assist in capturing the Digger before he kills again. Unfortunately, the Digger's accomplice is killed in an accident before he can pick up the ransom money he demanded to stop the Digger's killing. Working with Special Agent Margaret Lukas, with a secret of her own, Parker studies the documents available and begins the task of finding the killer. Deaver writes with great detail regarding the forensic tasks and has the intriguing twists in the plot for which he is known. It is a book that is hard to put down until you know the ending.
Rating: Summary: Not the Best Deaver Review: This book really has more holes in the plot than the -click- Digger's gun. The document forensics is good though, and there are some good spots in the story. Parker is not as good as Lincoln Rhyme, but it was interesting that they did contact him near the beginning of the book for forensic advice. There is some excitement in the book, and that is why I gave it a 3 instead of less. I will continue to read Jeff Deaver, and hope for more Rhyme.
Rating: Summary: Murder in America's capital Review: What happens when a criminal mastermind with the ability to control a cold-blooded killer suddenly dies? This is the premise for "The Devil's Teardrop". Deaver's fabulous prose, attention to detail, and surprising plot turns are evident throughout this fast-paced story. Deaver's forensic specialist, Lincoln Rhyme has a cameo here, but this time, the reader is introduced to Parker Kincaid, a former FBI man who specializes in handwriting analysis. Kincaid is called back to duty in assisting the Feds and cops in tracking a killer on New Year's Eve who is following a precise time schedule. With many of the city's residents and visitors gathering to celebrate, the killer has a vast amount of targets. The author once again gives you a peek into how the good guys go about catching the bad guys. Deaver also adds a good human element to the story by showing Kincaid's diffuculties of being a single father and how he has to juggle his work on the case while avoiding losing his son to his ex-wife in a custody battle. The relationship between the characters is well done, as is his insights into the killer's mind. I would have given this one 5 stars except for the fact that at times, the killer seems a little too invulnerable, but this is a minor point that is overshadowed by the intensity of the plot. If you don't care much for crime stories, as I once felt, give this one a try. Once you're done, you just might become a Jeffery Deaver fan.
Rating: Summary: a suspenseful read Review: I found this book on the bookshelf on a cabin I rented last summer, and decided to take in down to the beach to read, and blame it for the sunburn I got that day... I think it was the first book I'd read by Jeffrey Deaver. As soon as I was back home I immediately ordered 3 other books by the same author. I still consider his "A Maiden's Grave" one of the best books I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: One of his best books Review: This book keeps you interested from the first page to the last. Although some chapters seem to be less interesting than others. When you're reading this book, you think it's over and then comes a shocking twist to the story that you never would have expected. And then a another twist comes along after that one.
Rating: Summary: Deaver is amazing! Review: I just finished THE DEVIL'S TEARDROP, and I can say that it is the second best book I've read to date (right behind DeMille's PLUM ISLAND). All the twists and action in this book make it a non stop thrill ride. Just when you think the action is going to take a break, something else happens. Deaver's characters are all very strong and the dialogue is very realistic. I don't think he did as good with descriptions of setting as my other favorite author (DeMille), but it was still very good. With this super strong plot and non-stop action the setting is barely noticed anyway. I would classify this one as a Must Read. Other recommendations: Plum Island, The Lion's Game, Cathedral, and A Maiden's Grave
