Rating: Summary: Jeffrey - Don't sleep, don't eat - just write. Review: Superb author. Bone Collector and Coffin Dancer were my introduction to Jeffrey Deaver. Wow, there are not enough superlatives to describe how much I enjoyed both books. Devil's Teardrop is right up there with them. The heros are ordinary people, with extraordinary skills. The characters he molds are uniquely real. The details of document examination are so artfully woven, they never get boring, you only want to know more. The glimpse of Lincoln Rhyme, was pure genius. I can hardly wait for the Empty Chair. Jeffrey, don't sleep, don't eat, just write.
Rating: Summary: adequate but ultimately disappointing Review: I really liked The Coffin Dancer, and was intrigued by the excerpt of this book that appeared in the back. Now, however, I'm glad that I just got The Devil's Teardrop from the library instead of splurging on a bookstore copy. There were too many twists, and they stopped being believable. And I'd like to hear from someone who has some background in psychology. Generally, does a sociopathic _know_ he's a sociopath? I'll still read some of Deaver's earlier books, but I think he's slipped into deadline-driven hack mode.
Rating: Summary: Excellent story - Great characters Review: This was my first Deaver book and I'm looking forward to reading more. His characters had depth and interest and the story was engrossing with unexpected twists, heroes, and villains. I finished it in 2 days. Mr. Deaver also managed not to commit one of my major pet peeves - setting a story in a major city without adequate research as to the geography and local vernacular. The book, set in DC, differentiates between DC and the NoVA suburbs just as people who live here do, but others do not. His characters also weren't referring to Dupont Circle as on the way from the White House to the Capitol, or similar gaffes, as one major network TV show regularly does. One warning, if you live in DC Metro, this book might make you check over your shoulder and notice those on the Metro with you a little more closely.
Rating: Summary: A Thriller with new twists Review: I started this on Sat. afternoon - finished Sun. morning. I learning more about document identification and had a great read --- probably his best book yet! If you haven't read any of his try this one James Patterson would be proud!
Rating: Summary: worst book of the year Review: I had read The Bone Collector, loved it and was SO excited that I got Teardrop for my birthday....until I started the book. This has got to be the sappiest, most unlikeable "hero" ever! Not once did I even feel the slightest bit of empathy toward any character, the premise was goofy, and for the first time in years, I put a book down without finishing it. This one rates a great big "YUCK", and I doubt if I'll read another of Deaver's works. So there, I said it and I'm glad.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: A very good book indeed. This is the only the 2nd book of Deaver's that I have read. The 1st being " A Maiden's Grave ". A Maiden's Grave was good but this was excellent.
Rating: Summary: Good Read Review: This was an enjoyable book, and has many similarities with the Bone Collector- a short time window, a forensic specialist and a serial killer. It was fun.
Rating: Summary: It's a dud Review: Jeffrey Deaver's style of writing is getting old. We've all come to expect his stories to twist and turn until the very last page, and he's become so intent on writing like this that he's abandoned any sense of believability. When the final "shocker" came at the end of this novel, I said to myself, Well, I knew that was coming. Okay, so I didn't know exactly what was coming, but the possibilities were very limited. And it was just so fake, like a really bad movie. I recommend his stuff from a few years ago, especially The Maiden's Grave.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Having just read The Bone Collector and The Coffin Dancer, I was expecting big things from this book which I had asked for from Santa. However, unfortunately I was quite disappointed in his latest effort. The plot was OK, but the focus on the main characters melodramatic thoughts in regards to his children really put me off. As a separated mother myself, I know how it feels to think your access to your children will be taken from you, but his thoughts about it were always far too melodramatic to be true. I did not find this book as absorbing as his previous books, sometimes finding excuses not to read it for long periods. All in all, not bad, but compared to his others, nowhere near as effective. Looking forward to better writing next time. I won't give up on him yet.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed to say the least Review: This was the first Deaver book I have read and I was very disappointed with it. I would have attributed a novel of this quality to a budding author who had not yet got the formula right and had yet to realise readers are not particularly interested in authors who have an axe to grind about a boring or irrelevant topic.By far the biggest problem is that the story line is simply not credible. Perhaps Mr. Deaver should move into science fiction writing. I do not read crime stories to get helpful, home grown hints on how to deal with children. Nor do I read them to get hints on the correct use of grammar. A certain element of grammar was involved in the story line but the author included extra pieces that were simply annoying. The 'twist in the tail(tale)' came far too long before the end. With so many pages to go and the story drawing to what might have been a logical conclusion I realised I was soon to deal with a further totally unbelievable plot twist. It came with great predicability and further disappointment.
