Rating: Summary: Stunning Review: Penned by Finnish author Mika Waltari, The Egyptian is superlative in every aspect from cover to cover. This is right up there with the best from Pauline Gedge. However, it is much more than an ancient Egypt fiction novel. It is the story of Sinuhe, a young man of moderate means growing up in Amarnian Thebes. What is unique about this story, is its essence of human commonality. Although set in ancient times, Sinuhe's portrayal by Waltari could indeed be the story of any young man in any era. The character depth of Sinuhe is extraordinary, and he exemplifies the best and worst in all of us with a natural and sometimes embarrassing crystal clarity. In eloquent simplicity, this is the ancient story of everyone. I have read thousands of books, and this one is in my top ten.
Rating: Summary: Genious Review: This is the best book ever! Forget anyother from Shakespeare to Kippling.
Rating: Summary: When I read this book I was proud to be a finn ! Review: I could not put this book away for one single moment. I just got totally into the story, and I sometimes felt so sorry for Sinuhe, I nearly cryed, and sometimes I was so mad at him I thought I'd explode. I was only 14 that time, but this book is still frshly in my memory. Everyone who can read, MUST READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Sinuhe's story Review: Although this book is supposed to be one of the best books ever written by a Finn, I don't really go along with this. It's definately not a book for "all ages", more like for people ages 40->. Me, being 15, reading the book at 13, found it good but a little bit too long-winded. True, once you start you can't stop, but you won't get a good feeling after it. When I came to the ending, I had a feeling of "What? That's all?". Some of the parts could have been said in fewer words, while some of the parts were not as much as touched upon. Not recommended for those people looking for slightly more action in a book. If you want Egyptian style and don't like long-winded books, go for Christian Jacq's Ramses.
Rating: Summary: DonJaime's Review Review: Mr. Waltari's storytelling style comes forth in colorful detail and complex characters. The mix of history, intrigue and involves the reader in a way that one feels as if one is in these ancient places with these people. The characters are fleshed out to the point that one could almost toch these people and engage them in a conversation. "The Egyptian" is a tour-de-force of storyteling and social commentary. It is a great read and a compelling story for lovers of history and epics.
Rating: Summary: The Magic Of Egypth In Your Hands Review: Mika Waltari, takes us to the anciente Egypth showing us the life at that time. The characters are simply fantastic (sinhue e Kaptah)... It's pure magic to read
Rating: Summary: This book is a MUST for anyone capable of reading! Review: Mika Waltari tells a story like no-one else. He brings his characters and places alive. His observations about human nature seem genuine, sharp, even amusing and any reader of "The Egyptian" would be forgiven for thinking that the events in the story actually took place... If you can, do try to get your hands on his other titles - you won't be able to put then down either!
Rating: Summary: Definitely among the best ten books I've ever read. Review: Mika Waltari entered my life nearly accidentally as a $1.00 purchase of "The Egyptian" from our local library yearly fund raising book sale. I have not often said that much of anything could be said to have "changed my life", but I have to admit that his work has had effects on my life's views seconded only to readings of the Torah and Frank Herbert's six "Dune" books. Is this hyperbolic? I don't know, but I do know that I absolutely loved the "Egyptian" and all the other Waltari books on which I have been able to get my hands. I highly recommend it to all readers of all ages. I feel this book is that important.
Rating: Summary: Superb Review: I read this book by 1970, in Portuguese, and I remember I couldn't put it down. Now, since I am studying French and Spanish, I've already bought a Spanish version copy and I am in the process of ordering a French version one.
Rating: Summary: This is an outstanding novel. Read it. Review: This is an outstanding novel. Read it. Better than River God, which I liked, but with more depth.
