Rating: Summary: British Backstabbing Review: Finally, the epistolary novel gets the e-mail treatment. This novel is hard to put down. It takes a while to get into it, but once you have all the characters straight, it's hilarious. I found myself picturing my own coworkers in each of the characters' roles. We all know people like this - the humor that comes with recognition is the greatest humor of all. Hope to see a sequel!
Rating: Summary: Funny but something's amiss Review: The book has its good and funny moments but the stories just don't have a purpose nor do you feel connected with any of the characters. But maybe that's the point.
Rating: Summary: Kept the Sydney to LA flight awake with laughter for hours! Review: I bought this book while on a trip through Australia and actually read it twice during the two weeks I was there, it was so funny! I haven't read anything this clever and hilarious in ages! Definitely worth the price of admission!!! Working for a large corporation and being held hostage by e-mail myself, it hit almost too close to home. And, although I'm not in accounting, I'll be at BZ at 6 if anyone wants to join...
Rating: Summary: e-tainingly funny Review: There's nothing new in this book stylistically or in its content. Nevertheless, I found it to be very fumy, made more so by the way in which the conventions of e-mail messages tie the various characters together within the mailing group. For example, RE: 'I'm gutting'. - This is the CEO from Helsinki, Pertti van Helden replying to London's CEO, David Crutton, with regard to the abrasive brush-off sent in response to his rejected advertising campaign. I know it sounds a bit nerdy to cite such a technicality as an interesting and novel way to add dynamics to a story but the RE:s work really well to add context to the actions and reactions of the characters. The occasional 'Attachment' also works well as a way to spread the vitriol at the speed of e. I thought e was similar to Nicholson Baker's 'VOX' . VOX was two characters on a Chat Line. The principle is exactly the same but across a wider net of participants. The spoof, millershanks, web-site is worth having a look at, too.
Rating: Summary: where do I meet Lorraine? Review: Brilliant and funny! I cried laughing. I lost my breath laughing. If there has been anything published in this century that is funnier, I would like to know. Not since Mark Twain translated the Jumping Frog back from the French to Englist have I laughed as much. Yes, I think you have to have worked in a corporate environment to really appreciate it as much as I have but then I've met a lot of those characters. Congratulations to Matt Beaumont. How can you ever top this?
Rating: Summary: What ad agencies DON'T want you to know Review: I work for an interactive advertising agency and I swear I can equate each of these characters with someone at work. I wouldn't be surprised if they were up to the same no-good, backstabbing, shallow, oversexed, unscrupulous, political crap as Beaumont's characters. Okay, who am I kidding, I know we...er...they are. In short, it's advertising and it's funny. You don't have to be in the biz to appreciate it. Be prepared to laugh where ever you are when you read it, and you won't care who hears you cackle. Pony up the bucks, it's well worth it.
Rating: Summary: A Comic Genius Review: This book is hugely witty. Beaumont is an utter delight. If you have a sense of humor - buy this book NOW!
Rating: Summary: Very interesting Review: I stumbled upon this book by seeing it here, on someone else's wishlist. The concept of a book written entirely in e-mail seemed interesting, and indeed, it was an interesting book. The beginning was a bit hard to follow, as it took some time to remember who belonged in what department in the agency, but once I caught on, the rest was a breeze. Was this a great work of literature? No, but it was a quick and fun read and I wouldn't mind reading more books written in this style. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because, while it was a very creative attmept and the email style was interesting, the actual story seemed a bit far fetched. Then again, I have never worked in advertising, so what do I know? It could be right as rain.
Rating: Summary: You'll laugh out loud Review: One of the funniest books I have read. Clever construction which adds to the humor. If you're worked in advertising, you'll appreciate that he has the business nailed.
Rating: Summary: Give Me More E Review: This book is laugh out loud funny. I work in the ad business and it is such a great encapsulation of some of the goings on and delightfully wicked characters this business attracts. I read the book on a few flights and Beumont had me laughing out loud, regardless of the people around me. I was sorry when the book ended. If anyone knows some other titles of a similar ilk, please leave a review with details. Failing this I'll be keeping an eye peeled for Beumont's next effort. Well done.
