Rating: Summary: So funny...so true... Review: I think I have reread this book 4 times since initially reading it almost 2 years ago. I don't think I've enjoyed a book this much in a very long time. A must read for anyone who has ever, or will ever work in an office setting. Suddenly I look at my coworkers in a whole new way :).
Rating: Summary: e-xcellent! Review: Beaumont has written an excellent book in the form of a collection of email messages from a dozen or more characters at a London ad agency. From president down to accounting clerk everyone has a unique personality that comes through in the emailed missives. He weaves a hilarious story out of the self serving, backstabbing, egocentric employees of the firm.A quick read, I first finished it at a single sitting at a bookstore. Then on a trip to London I picked it up at a bookstore and reread it on the flight back.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Review: This book is a riot! It has everything...sex, drugs, rock 'n roll, and plenty of back-stabbing. I laughed all the way through it. I can hardly wait to get my hands on "The E Before Christmas". Happy reading!
Rating: Summary: Truth in advertising Review: He nailed it! I know each and every character in this book. Matt Beaumont has done an amazing job at bring the exciting, sometimes scary, always interesting world of an ad agency to life. As a copywriter, I totally related to all of the whining, the bickering, the back-stabbing and the gossip that went on at Miller Shanks. While the email format takes some time to get used to, it is well worth the effort. This book is entertaining enough for anyone to read. But if you work in an ad agency it's downright scary how on-target Mr. Beaumont is. You will finish this in one sitting. Must go now: the circus that is Miller Shanks is right outside my door.
Rating: Summary: One of the funniest books EVER Review: This is one of the funniest books I've ever read; no matter how many times you read it, it never gets old. Matt Beaumont wrote a sequel called "The E Before Christmas" that hasn't been published in the US, but is available from Amazon UK. It's almost as good.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful book! Review: Not fair! I started reading this book when I was tired. Big mistake. I found myself unable to put it down. Late into the night I'm still reading...and laughing. I had the distinct impression that Beaumont had worked side by side with me, and had read some of the same emails I used to get. I swear I know Carla, Zoe, and Crutton personally. What truly surprised me was how easy it was to separate all the characters. At first, I admit I was lost, but then I started to sort them out - enough that I went back and re-read the first part of the book. Bottom line - great book, wonderful read.
Rating: Summary: Rib-Crackingly Hilarious Review: To my knowledge there just isn't anything out there quite like "e". Sure, there may be other books that use the texts of e-mails to advance their stories, but in Matt Beaumont's extraordinary first novel the e-mails do it all. Set in the London offices of a worldwide advertising agency called Miller Shanks--Armitage Shanks being, in real life, a popular British urinal manufacturer--which is hot on the trail of an account with Coca-Cola. They might win it, too, if the self-aggrandizing executives and back-stabbing secretaries would allow the lascivious creative staff the freedom to do the job. Anyone who has worked in an office, or knows someone who has worked in an office will recognize Beaumont's archetypal characters even though he has blown them wonderfully out of proportion: the artistic director who does no work and takes all the credit; the lonely accounts staffer who runs auctions from his desk; the secretary who can't do simple tasks because she has a body waxing appointment; the tongue-pierced graphic designers who only come to work for the toys, the female co-workers' cleavage, and the beer money. That's just the outer offices! Beaumont gets a remarkable number of different voices pitch-perfect. The only time I was able to put this book down was when it forced me into uncontrollable fits of falling-off-the-couch laughter. I've laughed out loud to other British authors Stephen Fry, Nick Hornby and Martin Amis, but to none of them so often or so long as to "e". If you like sarcasm, if you like dramatic irony, if you love it when horrible people get exactly what's coming to them, you will not be able to put "e" down either. And once you've enjoyed "e", check out Amazon.co.uk to pick up Beaumont's short, but worthy follow-up not published in the US: "The e Before Christmas". Cheers!
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT Review: I loved this book so much I keep checking back to see if Matt Beaumont wrote anything new. In fact I bought about 15 copies to give away because I wanted to share with my friends and family. The sarcastic British humour is perfect, and the book is written all through Dilbert-y email dialogues. You get to know the characters and their quirks really well and you will not be able to put the book down. The worst thing about this book was that it had to end. I hope Matt Beaumont writes more of these funny novels...
Rating: Summary: Make It Stop. Review: Wah hah hah! I am glad my office is less e-mail dependent than my home life. This book was impossible for me to stop reading. And all the unexpected little turns and ever present two-faced handlings - the book was a blast.
Rating: Summary: Write on Target!! Review: This guy *must* have worked at Ogilvy before... its just to close to home!! Hilarious read for anyone in the ad/marketing/PR world!
