Rating: Summary: An oldie, but so good! Review: This was the second time I read The Mirror by Marlys Millhiser. It is an excellent book although difficult to categorize. The plot begins when a young woman on the eve of her wedding looks into an old family mirror and is transported into the body of her grandmother. And if that isnt' enough, her grandmother also finds herself in her granddaughter's body.Part romance, part supernatural this is considered by many fans of time travel to be a classic. If you enjoyed Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, this book is for you. I loved this book whenI first read it in 1978 and 25 years hasn't changed my feelings.
Rating: Summary: Really good premise, really good book Review: I read this book twice because I loved it so much. Shay Garrett, living in the 1970s, somehow switches places with her grandmother after looking into a mysterious mirror. She then finds herself living a half century before her own birth. She inherits her grandmother's life situation, her marriage partner and her destiny, and has to live that life instead of her own. Regretting how little she paid attention during history class, she miscalculates the start of the Great Depression, but otherwise has (from the perspective of her new contemporaries) an eerie ability to "see the future", including the future of her own mother, to whom she gives birth, but with whom she never had a good relationship. She's also brought with her the "loose woman" attitudes of the 1970s, and finds she has philosophically more in common with the town prostitutes than the "virtuous" townspeople and has to struggle to tone it down.In the meantime, her grandmother finds herself in the future, living as Shay. She's brought with her turn-of-the-century innocence and bewilderment over things like indoor plumbing, and has to cope with a world completely different from the one she was raised in. While I truly loved the story, my only complaint was that the storyline for Shay sent back in the past was far better-developed than the storyline for Grandma Bran brought into the future. Even though Shay was the primary character, I was left feeling let down that the story had so little to say about Grandma Bran's experiences. I was almost bewildered when the book was over, thinking: "Yes but..." I also never got a clear picture of the relationship between Shay and her mother. I knew they never got along and never had a good relationship, but never really understood why that was - I was just supposed to take the author's word for it. Aside from that, I definitely recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: read more than once Review: I initially read this book over 15 years ago, and I have never quite been able to get the story out of my head. I recently stumbled across an original copy and re-read it again for the second time. NOT your typical time travel novel, and I love the author's style
Rating: Summary: I've read this book six (6) times Review: I'm almost 40 and first read this book back in high school. I believe it captures your complete attention because although it's a time travel story, it takes place in the not-so-distant past. Plus, it takes place in Boulder, Colo., right here in America as opposed to some chick traveling back eons to the knights of Middle Aged England or some Viking escapade - - places and times we perhaps really can't relate to. Being that this story is around the turn of the century here in America, you feel that it actually could happen or did happen. Plus, you want to scream at the main character to tell everyone about an important event in history about to happen or for her to go ahead invent something before it actually was invented. It's not a book that rambles on and you wind up skipping pages. Rather, you're glued to each page and reading like all get-out to get to the next page. Slow down, relax and take in a story that I betcha you'll wind up re-reading because you'll wish to experience it all over again.
Rating: Summary: The BEST Book I've ever read!!! Review: I don't remember how long ago I first read this book, or for that matter where I first obtained it, but it's worn, beaten and the pages are falling out I have read it so many times. I wish she would have written a sequel, or for that matter a screenplay, I'd love to see this made into a movie. No matter how many times I read it, it just gets better!! Just today I stored away several of my books but this one stays on my night stand - always.
Rating: Summary: The Mirror Review: Read this because I enjoy time travel stories, especially Time And Again. The Mirror was an excellent read, and tough to put down. I thought that the Shay section was more interesting than the Brandy section, which seemed more of an afterthought. Perhaps it's always more interesting contemplating another time period than the time period one lives in.
Rating: Summary: Unexpected, wonderful, at times scary....adventure Review: I couldn't put this book down. Not a romance, not a thriller, not a whodunit.... good time-travel fiction with historical flair for reality. I bought it on Friday night, and finished it Sunday afternoon. It was so interesting, so very different from anything I've read lately. This thoroughly unique story moved me to feel what the characters must be feeling, especially their fright and efforts to return to their times. I feel so lucky to have found this book because of a recommendation by an amazon.com listmania list! Thank you!
Rating: Summary: What a Ride!!!! Review: I have read this book many times over the past several years. I have bought at least 10 copies and loaned them to people who never return it. I don't know why the premise of trading places with your own grandmother is so titillating, but it certainly captures the reader's attention quickly and keeps one entertained. I find something new each time I read it. The descriptions of the clothing and hairstyles will really click with those of baby-boomer age. I also recommend "The Threshold" by the same author. It is almost as good as this book.
Rating: Summary: The Mirror -- by Maryls Millhiser Review: I also read this book many years ago. I loved it so much and I really got caught up in the characters and the author's description of the two different women's experiences. As I was reading it I became fascinated with the two women - it's unlike any book I have ever read. I put the book away, but when I went to look for it I couldn't find it. I never forgot about it and have looked for it over the years. What a thrill to find it on Amazon.com! I can't wait to read it again.
Rating: Summary: Unforgetable! Review: Iread this book many years ago and have managed to hang on to it still- it is a 1978 copyright. Never have I read such a compelling book-I have probably read it 3 or 4 times and all my sisters have read it and my daughter and my mother, too. ... all so unforgetable! It just [scooped] me right into their lives! I thought about it constantly and dreampt about it nightly. It is time to read again!
