Rating: Summary: An interesting look back at the '80's. Review: I grew up with girls like Tracy. She got off easy. The young women I knew all ended up pregnant. The plot was thin, but I would recommend it to friends who had similar experiences.
Rating: Summary: very nice Review: I first noticed this book on my friend's table this summer while at a program for high schoolers at Xavier in New Orleans. The writing was flavorful and brought the characters to life. Even though Tracy was the main character, I identified with Raheema more and understood what she was going through. I highly enjoyed this book and recommended this book to my sister as soon as I got off of the plane.
Rating: Summary: Potentially excellent teenage reading! Review: As the mother of two African American teens, I felt that Mr. Tyree wrote an excellent book that could get the teens interested. He covered all aspects of being a teenager. I tried, but was unsuccessful at keeping this book from my 17 year old son who is not a reader. He saw himself and his friends in this book. However, there was no need for the vulgarity. This book could have been recommended reading for 16 and over if not for the unnecessary, highly descriptive sex. I think our young authors should start thinking about reaching our young would be readers. Leave something to the imagination next time like you did with Single MOM!
Rating: Summary: First loves are forever Review: WOW, take me back to the 80's. This was a great book to just "read". You could put it down and start back up a week later and enjoy it. This book depicted the way things were when I was growing up. I loved it and am going to search more of Tyree's books. Hope they are as flamboyant and easy reading as this one was. The ending was great - I also am stuck on my 1st sexual experience - that's why I married him!
Rating: Summary: A great disappointment Review: I was very disappointed in this book. I struggled through it but will be very careful before I buy another book by Mr. Tyree. I felt the characters were poorly developed. One of the things that makes a great book is that you need to connect with the characters. All I wanted for the characters to do in this book was disappear.
Rating: Summary: Annoying and Disappointing Review: As a teen who spent summers in Germantown in the late 70's, I could certainly appreciate the settings and the essence of what Mr. Tyree was trying to capture. However, because of the grammatical errors, plot inconsistencies and profanity, "Flyy Girl" became so difficult to read that I was unable to finish it. As an avid adult reader and African-American mother, I was turned off by the profanity, particularly when used by Tracy's mother when speaking to her. Yes, I, my cousins and our friends spoke this way among ourselves but I don't recall any adult that we were aquainted with, then or now, speaking to children using such language. Grammatically, it appeared that Mr. Tyree's editor used Grammar-Check to read and correct the manuscript instead of doing it himself. The constant inappropriate use of "inside of......" (she went inside of the kitchen; Tracy looked inside of the mirror, etc.) and the plot inconsistencies (on pg. 174, Victor pulls a 'quilt' out for them to lie on, then on the next page, Tracy's grabbing for the 'rug', etc.) became so annoying they interfered with my enjoyment of the book. I think Mr. Tyree has a lot of potential as a writer but he should perhaps write fiction expressly for teens until he has honed his craft a bit more for adult readers.
Rating: Summary: COULD NOT FINISH IT Review: When I first began to read this book, it really captured my attention. However, as I continued reading about Tracy (the main character) I noticed the scenarios kept repeating themselves. It seemed like Omar got stuck like a broken record because the story wouldn't really move on. Unfortunatley I did not finish the book and returned it to the library. (I did sneak and read the last page). I still want to read Mr. Tyree's other books and hope they are more readable than Flyy Girl.
Rating: Summary: A little sumpthin sumpthin for the jitterboppers! Review: This book could get the average teen hooked on reading but it's not for the average adult that wants to read a good novel. I understood the plot but Tracy, her parents, and her brother just really got on my nerve. They had too much drama for me compared to Raheema's family with the abusive father and rebellious sister. Tracy and her family were just downright dysfunctional. I didn't really like this book. Maybe the next book, Omar!
Rating: Summary: Everyone should read this book Review: I do not care what anyone else says, this book is one of my favorites. I think Tyree is a very good writer, and deserves all the praise he can receive. The story was very vulgar, however in the end Tracy changed and understood everything she did was not right, even though she actually waited on Victor. This book was well-written.
Rating: Summary: Pretty Bad First Try Review: I found this book to be lacking in depth. Character development was extremely poor. Never understood what made "Flyy Girl" tick. Never understood the thought processes of any of the characters. I made it through the book, but I will hesitate to purchase another book by Mr. Tyree.
