Rating: Summary: I don't know why I was surprised it's so good! Review: I grew up with Judy Blume and was surprised to find out that now she has adult novels! What a treat! This book speaks so true and at times as though I was reading about myself. It was hard to put down and the talk of sexual tension and fantasy really caught me off guard but were such a fun read...who doesn't feel like they shouldn't be having certain thoughts?!?! What a great character...the way it's written you have emotions right along with her. I am glad I took the chance and picked this one up based on author alone. Can't wait to try her other ones now!!
Rating: Summary: Wifey, a book that tells all... Review: Imagine having the same routine everyday of your life since you were married. Chicken on Wednesdays and Sex on Saturdays. Sandy Pressman was getting quite bored with her everyday life. It was summer time and the kids were away at summer camp. Sandy was home alone; she planned to read several books over the summer but her plans changed. One day Sandy heard a man on a motorcycle driving down her street and she went to the window. Standing there, a man dressed in only a white sheet and stars and stripes helmet, gets off the bike, and revels all to Sandy by removing his garment. Sandy, disturbed yet intrigued by the man on the bike calls her husband. All through out this novel is explicit details of Sandy's love life, not only with Norman. So if you enjoy reading a fun filled, dirty book, Wifey by Judy Blume is just the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Definitely a winner!! Review: Take one bored wife, Sandy, add a routine, clueless husband, Norman, couple that with the motorcycle flasher, still unknown and the demands of the family and you've got the beginning of a conflict. Sandy is a bored housewife who tries to discover herself. Unhappy with the routine life her husband seems to enjoy, she is lost when Norman enrolls her in tennis and golf lessons at the Club for the summer. To relieve her boredom, Sandy goes outside the safety of her family to relieve her itch for something new. It's a rollercoaster ride she is prepared to take, along with the consequences afterward in order to experience life. Normally, it's the man who faces a midlife crises with a seven year itch, not the woman. I'm surprised Sandy stayed as long as she did as bored as she was. That's what makes this book different and not dated to me. Norman did what he was supposed to providing for his family. Emotionally he was detatched. He also had certain ideas. His chauvinistic attitude sickened me. It was Norman who decided what they would do at the Club that summer. He decided what Sandy served for supper every night and what day he had his 'little something'. I mean, the guy was so scared of bacteria and disease that he wouldn't go to sleep till he washed. He even went so far as to track his dog's bathroom habits. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something different, but because of the rough language I only recommend this book to those over 21.
Rating: Summary: Depressing and Dated Review: My advice is don't even bother with this book if you're not already 50. I am the same age as the main character, but I could not relate to her at all. Sandy ("Wifey") is stuck in a dull, lifeless marriage with a relentlessly controlling, soulless man, and the whole time she acts as if she is somehow at fault for her unhappiness. The only thing she is to blame for is staying with this man in the first place. Maybe this resonates with women who were 32 years old in 1978, but I spent the whole time (all 6 hours - it's a mercifully quick read) inwardly screaming at this woman to leave the idiot and get a real life. She certainly demonstrates in the book that she knows what she wants and what would make her happy. Why anyone would put up with what she does, I don't know. But then again, maybe I'm just too 2003 for this book -- which is why I say it's hopelessly dated. I grew up on Judy Blume books - they taught me more about life and love and sex and growing up than anyone in real life did. I was intrigued when I saw "Summer Sisters" about a year ago and picked it up. Having found "Summer Sisters" to be an excellent "grown-up" novel by an author once close to my adolescent heart, I had similar hopes for "Wifey". What a disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Good, Dirty, Fun Review: I grew up reading Judy Blume, and as an adult I can't say how happy I am that she also writes for the older audience as well. Wifey, a tale of an upper-middle class housewife, is quick, dirty and a lot of fun to read. I imagine a lot of women, not just housewives, feel the way Sandy does when life is routine with little or no excitement potential. Sandy's imagination takes off when the lone motorcycle man comes by, and she just can't stop there. Her imagination is wild and eventually becomes reality. However, Sandy is just not ready to face some of the realities within this fantasy world she has created. And that makes a good story!
Rating: Summary: I could hardly put this book down!!! Review: From the first page I was hooked and never knew that Judy Blume who wrote books I enjoyed as a 10 year old, would write something quite so erotic. The ending was a little boring though, I expected a little bit more. But otherwise, a good book.
Rating: Summary: just awful Review: this was the most frustrating and annoying book i have ever read. the main character was such a sap it was painful to read about her exploits. the back of the book made it seem like she went out on sexual adventures when in actuality she either fell into the situation or didn't have enough of a backbone to get out of it. It was just agitating to read about a woman who couldn't think for herself and was walked all over by her husband. the only reason i can think you might want to buy this book is to skim it and only read the dirty parts otherwise, forget it.
Rating: Summary: An okay Blume read. Review: I was a bit disappointed in this story. It had all the Blume characteristics, lots of sex, interesting characters, but for some reason, this book did not grab me as others have in the past(like Summer Sisters). Sandy is frustrated in her marriage to Norman, who is very rigid and has sex once a week and never deviates from their "routine". Sandy feels there must be more to life and marriage than cooking meals, raising the kids and making Norman happy. Sandy begins to come alive as she is in several sexual situations with several different men (I won't tell you who...that would give it away!) Perhaps I have outgrown the Blume story mould and was looking for a more enriching read. Overall, those who like Blume, will probably like this book.
Rating: Summary: Not worth the time Review: There are so many other great books out there. As a woman, I did not identify with this repressed, depressing character at all. The dialogue drags on pointlessly sometimes and the writing is unpoetic. If you are in the mood for a brainless read for a plane ride, this would be it.
Rating: Summary: Good Review: I use to read Judy Blume as a child.I had no idea she was writing books for adult's.A friend told me about this book. Sandy is a fustrated housewife, after an encounter with a moctorcyle man.Her fantasies awaken leading her to seek fufillment and adventure. What she finds is heartache and disappiontment.I would have given this book 5 stars.Yet the ending was alittle disappionting.
