Rating: Summary: Warning Scarpetta fans! Review: I just finished "Blow Fly" and can't believe how awful this book was! I was bored through most of it with the incredible descriptions of computer intelligence and weaponry! There was no real plot here - it just rambled around and around. Wrapped up in a few pages at the end with lots left unfinished and I am not the least bit interested in the next book because it will have to wrap up all the lose ends that left this book most unsatisfying. What a disappointment for a Cornwell fan.
Rating: Summary: Black Notice Part III Review: In my review of The Last Precinct, I described it as Black Notice Part II. Here is Part III and it bears more resemblance to Friday the Thirteenth Part III, than to the decent complex plausible work Cornwell gave us early in her career.Cornwell has created some good characters. In this book, while many of them are back, their connection to the plot is questionable. It is as if someone has a list of characters and is seeking to work them into some sort of plot. One has to wonder if this is Cornwell's work or that of a ghostwriter. There is no love for or attention paid to any of them. Here we have Lucy, Pete, Rocco, the werewolf, Benton, Jaime, Jay, Bev, and wait...Benton? He's dead! Well no, he is resurrected for some unknown reason in this tale of unfinished business. To make it worse the werewolf has escaped from Texas's death row (yeah right) and may have freed a necrophile and cannibal named the Beast who was in transit to get the needle. They just disappear, undoubtedly to return in an even worse sequel. By the way, Cornwell describes a corrupt member of organized crime who is the United States Attorney in Baton Rouge. U.S. Attorneys can be jerks, they can be political, and they can be boorish. What they cannot be is members of the Mafia or its French equivalent. Fortunately, this particular character is the most poorly developed character in the book. Let's give this series a rest before Rocco, Jay, and Bev return from the dead. One resurrection is enough.
Rating: Summary: Double the pages, we need more character development! Review: It COULD have been good. I wish so much that Ms. Cornwell could recapture the essence of the first three books in this series. I thought this book was the one to do it, but I needed much more character development. I'm not sure if the book got the life edited out of it, but so much seemed to be missing. I just don't care about these people like I used to, and want to again! Even the big surprise wasn't enough to hold my attention. I hope so much she will continue to write this series and rekindle the fiery magic from the beginning, starting with the complete removal of the "wolfman" please. How about bringing the first lover back from the dead too? Working on the past of these characters would be fine, but not this brutal, sick, freaky creature, that frankly, I can't, or won't buy. Check this one out of the library. It's worth continuing the series. But, I'm sorry to have invested the money.
Rating: Summary: sounds plausable, Review: I don't know if I agree with Cornwell on what she thinks in this book but her explaination certainly is plausable! Very compelling!
Rating: Summary: Big fan letdown...again!! Review: I almost stopped reading on page one when I realized Cornwell carried the use of the third person narrative into this book, too. It did not work well; it makes me think she's not writing these books anymore. And, when what's produced is ridiculous and boring, it solidifies that thought even more. I was surprised and confused about Lucy coming on to Rudy and that Scarpetta was barely in the book at all. I don't understand how intelligent readers are to accept that the Wolfman just strolls out of prison...blind, on death row, high security, etc. Ridiculous. I was tired of that character when he first appeared and am dreading the next book where I'm sure he'll take center stage. Also, to so quickly kill Bev without much story, to not share Jay Talley's ending with us, and to wrap up the story in about three pages? What a letdown. As a book editor myself, I am stunned that something like this went to press.
Rating: Summary: A very long Epilogue and Prologue Review: That's what I felt this book was - an epilogue from the last Scarpetta novel and a prologue for the next one. The cutting of the chapters was disconcerting. A chapter would end in the middle of a conversation and the following would begin with the next line in the same conversation - huh? The book is full of hints of things that had taken place over the past three years, but no worthy details. The details were spent on things I had long stopped caring about, like why Lucy left the FBI. The revisionist history of the big "twist" is insulting to faithful fans, and unless the FBI has access to the same Time Turner Hermione uses in the third Harry Potter novel, flat-out impossible. Borrow it from your local library and save your money to write letters of encouragement to Ms. Cornwell, since she obviously needs it for the next installment.
Rating: Summary: Read Patterson instead Review: I am disappointed I choose to read this before reading the new Patterson book. At least he can keep a character fresh and interesting. This book is awful. Patricia you are the reason I started reading mysteries. Hopefully you have already started the next Scarpetta novel and will renew our faith in you.
Rating: Summary: Quick ending Review: I have just finished Blow Fly by Cornwell. It kept me turning the pages. I was amazed at how well it was flowing and how I could visualize this book in movie format but the ending was quick and a lot of issues unresolved, I assume so we'll buy the next book, which I will. Hopefully, her and Benson can have more time to sort things out in the next book....?
Rating: Summary: Don't Blow Your Time Review: Over five hundred pages with some of the same creepy characters that were featured in the previous books, I did not like them then and I don't like them now. I was hoping to move beyond the Chandonne brothers. If you have not read the previous books the reader will be totally lost because Cornwell seems to be tying up a lot of loose ends from previous books. It seems ludicrous that after all the grieving Kay Scarpetta did for Benton that he gets resurrected. There is a big build up of events in this book, but the conclusion comes with amazing speed. It could not believe the story wrapped up so quickly. First time reader, go back and read an earlier Scarpetta novel; they were actually good.
Rating: Summary: Some loose ends tied up, some more unraveled. Review: I love Patricia Cornwell and I immediately rushed out to purchase this book as soon as it was available. I was hooked from the first chapter, as usual, and it was a wild ride into both new and old parts of Kay and Lucy's lives. But, I have to admit that the entire thing with Benson really threw me. I was almost reminded of Kathy Bates in "Misery" when she spoke of the dime cliff-hangers with unbelievable twists. I haven't quite decided if I want to go back and re-read Benson's demise...I think that I want to let the good guys prevail this time. Especially since Kay deserves to have her love by her side. Other than that, I found Blow Fly to be another Cornwell roller-coaster that I didn't want to end.
