Summary: Old Read, New Review
Review: Whenever someone asks me what my favorite book is I ALWAYS say Far Pavilions. I read this book over 15 years ago and still remember the vivid scenes like I read it yesterday.

So why write this now? Well, my favorite books are almost all referred by someone else and I don't mean Oprah. In turn I like to share special reads with others. Like some other reviewers, I have wanted to go to India ever since I read this. I can picture the mountains, I can smell the back streets, I can feel the tension and I can't even remember the entire plot.

I'm a visual kind of guy. If the author describes it and I can see it I will remember forever. This happened over and over again in FP. The visual images are burned into my brain. I love them.

Summary: A masterpiece!
Review: I first read this book when I was about 14. It is truly one of the most unforgettable pieces of literature I have ever come across. It made me fall in love with India. It is, without a doubt, my favorite book. I have recommended it to friends many times. It will appeal to someone who loves romance novels, or action-adventure, or exotic locations. M.M.Kaye has managed to put so much of the essence of what India really was into this book that it transports you back in time to the days when she was an untamed creature fighting against British imperialism.

Summary: Reading this book is to have an unforgettable experience
Review: I read this book first when I was 15, and it has got to be one of the best that has ever been written. The honesty, love and wonderment with which M.M. Kaye writes about India is magnificent. The characters of Ashton and Anjuli are unforgettable, and more than just magical - there is too much pain, anguish and struggle for that. It can leave you shaken as well as elated at times! This book, its characters and the whole experience is something I would wish everyone, who loves reading, share and enjoy. I promise you that it will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Summary: Excellent Fiction!
Review: This is the classic historical love story by M.M Kaye- her best known work and well regarded as her best work. This is a great gift for someone who is going to be cooped up for a long period of time- say in the hospital or on a global flight in coach......I my humble opinion nobody does armchair travel better than M.M Kaye when she is writing about the far flung outposts of the British Empire. Her masterpiece is on no fan of historical fiction should be without!

From back of book:

We all remember certain sweeping noves we hated to see come to an end, it was almost like breaking up with someone we love. You will feel that way about The Far Pavillions. From the foothills of the Himalayas, through the palaces of the exotic East, this novel is a passionate amd triumphany story that excites us, fills us with joy, moves us to tears, and helps us remember just what it is we want most from a novel. It is a mesmerizing story of hatred and bitter combat; of courage, and human scarifice, of the star-crossed wedding of East and West. Above all it is a tale of love. The story of Ash , an Englishman, and Juli, a princess who must choose between the heritage of her people and the man she loves. It is a story that transcends time and place, a monumental epic we will never forget.

Summary: A simply wonderful book
Review: This book is comparable to War and Peace and that's saying a lot. The names and characters, as in War and Peace, can be a bit daunting to remember at first, but stay with it. It is a love story, but the story moves so fast and with such an interesting chain of events that the story never drags. This is one of those books that you wish wouldn't end. I've never seen it listed among the all time greatest books, but it should be.

Summary: Truly a literary work of art.
Review: This book is like crack cocaine. Only it is crack cocaine that is good for you. I have read it many, many times and each time I find myself thinking about it to distraction. I can be driving, eating, in class or studying and all I can think of is "when I finish this, I can read some more Far Pavilions".

Summary: Far Pavilions
Review: The bestseller about a Eurasian couple seeking for love and survival amidst the turmoil of 19th century India and Afghanistan.

Astonishing in scope, but exhausting in length. Painfully expository, though the battle sequences near the end are worth reading. Largely a romance novel, and quite old-fashioned in its view of gender relations. Also old-fashioned in its portrayal of ethnicity, but quite sensitive for the time period (late 1970's). Rather interesting in the light of recent history -- Kabul as the city founded by Cain. One character slides annoyingly in and out of a particularly irritating stereotypical Irish brogue. On the other hand, some of the landscapes are lovely.

I found my eyes glazing over, but I can't deny there were exciting bits. I remember Kaye's other work as being somewhat more original and less bloated.

Summary: Fabulous!
Review: Simply Fabulous. I just took it from the library thinking it's the kind of book which will make me fall asleep quickly. IT WAS A BAD CHOICE! After the first few chapters I could not stop myself from continuing to read. For a few days I've been living in India back in time with Ashton.M M Kaye is a fantastic writer.
