Rating: Summary: This one will stay close to my heart forever! Review: My Mother-in-Law told me about this book years ago. I was able to find a beat up old copy at a garage sale and it sat with my "books to read" for years. I finally picked it up to read and I almost put it back down because of its size...well I started reading this book and had a very hard time putting it down..this book is a classic. So well written with the characters climbing into your heart and soul.It was wonderful to read a book that was not filled with fowl language and so nice to leave the love scenes up to your imagination....David Champlain was a prince and Sarah his princess. If you consider yourself a "reader" then this one is for you. It will be a long time until another book has so much impact on me. I suggest that you find a copy of this book and get your self comfortable. My copy will stay with me forever!
Rating: Summary: Five Smooth Stones Review: I am from Australia and whilst living in Viriginia in the mid seventies a black American friend gave me Five Smooth Stones to read. I have remembered it to this day and recently tried to find a copy via bookstores in Oz and any people from America who I happened to come across here. To no avail. When I recently became hooked up to the Internet I idly looked up Five Smooth Stones, not expecting to find anything and to my wonder and delight there it was with fifty or more reviews. As an young Aussie living in the US at the time I did, I was (sad to say) totally ignorant of the real history of black Americans. Five Smooth Stones was the best way to learn. Ed or Shirley White if by any chance you happen to read this please email me. I would love to contact you.
Rating: Summary: Five Smooth Stones Review: I read Five Smooth Stones when I was a teenager, over 25 years ago. I lost my copy many years ago and always wanted to get another copy and read it again. I never could remember the author's name and I am thrilled to finally find out I can get a copy. I strongely recommend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: One of my most beloved books Review: I came across "Five Smooth Stones" quite by accident at least 25 years ago, and have re-read it many times since. I recommend it to all my reading friends, and their reaction to the book tells me a lot about that person. I have always wanted to talk with Ann Fairbairn, and I, too, wonder why it hasn't been made into a movie. I also wonder why "Five Smooth Stones" is not on required reading lists. I am happy to find other works by Fairbairn at Amazon.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite books of all time Review: I picked up "Five Smooth Stones" from the library at least 25 years ago by chance and fell in love with the book immediately. Since then I have read it many times, enjoying it just as much each time. I recommend it to all my reading friends, and their response to the book tells me a lot about the person. I have always wanted to talk to Ann Fairbairn, and I, too, am amazed that a movie hasn't been made of it.
Rating: Summary: Five Smooth Stones Review: I read this book when it was first published and have lost or given away my copy. When I think of my favorite books over the last 50+ years of reading, no list is complete without this basic human rights story. I will never forget David and Sarah and all the other humans.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read and Excellent for the Long, Hot, Summer Days! Review: I first read this book many years ago and then re-read it a few years later. The characters are so well done...David's grandfather is wonderful! I lost my copy when I let someone borrow it and am eagerly looking forward to purchasing another to read again. It's difficult to understand how anyone could read this book and be unchanged by it. It provokes serious introspection and soul-searching!
Rating: Summary: Five Smooth Stones Review: I found this book quite by accident and am so glad I did. Ann Fairbairn's characters have changed my whole attitude about what it's like to be a black man in a white world. David is one of the most memorable of men, and Sara is his match. Be prepared, though. This book is a real tear-jerker.
Rating: Summary: Best and most memorable book I've ever read Review: I read Five Smooth Stones about seven years ago and after finishing it I was changed perhaps forever. The characters were so real and yet so unlike anyone I had ever known. I became so involved in their lives that I felt as though I did know them. I just recently began thinking about this book and I know that I will read it again soon.
Rating: Summary: 5 Smooth Stones Review: I've read this book 2 times years ago. Now I want to read it again.I found myself as watching a movie as I read. I can't believe no one has made a movie from it.Most of the characters, I put a actor or actress face on, are dead or too old to play in a movie version. In the meantime I'll just have to read it again. The size of the book shouldn't hinder you from reading it.You'll enjoy every page.
