Rating: Summary: Bad writing, lame characters Review: I ordered this book because the premise sounded amusing and there were so many five-star reviews! I found the writing to be bad, the protagonist to be annoying and the rest of the characters to be cardboard. It felt like a Mad Libs of chick-lit cliches with lots of trying-too-hard-to-be funny scenes that made me roll my eyes. Good idea, lame execution.
Rating: Summary: Fun, delightful, easy read Review: I LOVED the Wife of Reilly, and am going to recommend it for my book club. After some pretty heavy-duty books, this is just what we need to restore our humour and levity. The whole "dating" sequence -- from dinners with losers and drinks with neurotics, to the delightful Yasmine, to huge parties with life size cutouts -- had me in stiches and endeared me to Prudence (the main character)even more. What woman could read this book and not find bits of herself in it? It's a true gal-pal book!
Rating: Summary: Chic Lit a Guy Can Love Review: Oh my. Ever finished a book and then just started rereading it from the front? That's Wife of Reilly. After two hilarious reads I'm still not willing to put it away. The first chic lit that I am actually recommending to the guys at work. When's the sequel???
Rating: Summary: Funny. Scary, Even for guys! Review: Ever had to choose between two lovers? One the passionate-great-sex lover -- the other the practical one? If you have, you can relate to this book. If you haven't, it still makes a good fantasy. I hadn't even heard of "chik-lit" until I had the pleasure of meeting the charming Ms. Coburn on a plane to Detroit where she was headed for her Michigan book-signing tour. Despite the fact she almost hurled on me because of motion sickness, I went ahead and bought the book and read it. It was great! If you liked the show "Sex and the City", you'll love the way this book reads. It's written in a similar style, so it's fun to "listen in" on the frank conversations she has with her friends, but what made me laugh out loud were the thoughts that went through Prudence's mind as all this plays out. So true. Sometimes scary. Very educational. I stayed up 'til 3 AM reading it because each chapter makes you curious about what the next scenario will be as she goes about her devious plan. I give Coburn credit for not selling out with a fairy tale ending. The resulting reactions were realistic and made the story believable. Definitely worth a read!
Rating: Summary: crazy, fun, and clever - a great read! Review: What a hoot! A perfect story to take you away from the 'every day'. As for Prudence- I'm not sure if I want to hug her or shake her! I do know I'd love to have a drink with her!!!
Rating: Summary: A Fun Read Review: I read it in one (late) night - it was so entertaining, I couldn't put it down. Witty and fun, perfect for the beach or poolside, an airplane flight, or a sleepless night. I confidently predict that this will end up as a hit movie!
Rating: Summary: I wouldn't recommend this one................. Review: I bought this after reading the reviews on here, and was highly disappointed. The main character was very shallow and one-dimensional. It was a struggle for me to get through the book, and after I had, I wished I wouldn't have wasted my time.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: The wife of Reilly has a rather unusual problem. While at a college reunion, she becomes engaged to Matt (the one who got away) forgetting for the moment that she's married to Reilly. Reilly, who is really a very nice guy - just a little boring. So she feels that the only right thing to do is to find Reilly a new wife before she tells him that she's engaged. Sounds silly? But it works so well. She puts ads in newspapers and interviews the perspective dates. And when Reilly is out of town she has an exhibit of him at a local gallery. Of course, this is when he unexpectedly comes home and discovers what is going on. This book is uniquely funny but also poignant. Prudence's relationships all come in for scrutiny and combine to make her a better person. The best part of the book? It's left open for a sequel!
Rating: Summary: Tangled webs... Review: The author of this novel really cares about getting her audience. She writes an original book, and then emails people who may be interested! Otherwise, I may have never known about this book! At first, I was very repelled by the main character, Prudence. She seems to have no redeeming qualities, she cheats on her husband, tells her new boyfriend that her old husband is dead, and agrees to marry the new guy, while her poor "nice guy" husband Reilly is back at home in New York with no knowledge of any of it... yet. I realize, we are supposed to dislike this character! Because, like all of us, she is not perfect. She is somewhat of a self-serving narcissist, who gets collagen, botox injections, and an eye lift, wears blue eye contacts, all before she hits 40. But, does she get what she deserves at the end? Or, will she get the man of her dreams, and get to "recycle" her husband to another lonely woman through the personal ads, all the while, having her cake and eating it too? It didn't take me that long to find out because I was forcing myself to stay awake for this one! Very quick and entertaining. Read it if you want some original chick lit! I believe that this author is going somewhere! Recommended!
Rating: Summary: HILARIOUS! Review: I loved this book! Lots of twists and turns with a great ending. Super dialogue and funny characters. Once I started reading it, it was very difficult to put down. I just finished the last half all in one sitting. It helped that I'm sick and can read guilt-free while the laundry and dishes are piled a mile high. I can't wait for her next book!
