Rating: Summary: Definite "Do-Not-Miss" Review: I finally picked up this book when it came out in paperback. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long! Amanda Davis conveys more in a paragraph than others do in entire novels. The book is engrossing from the first few pages and has left me captivated long after the end. Rarely do characters capture my imagination more than the ones in this novel. The author's richly addicting story creates entire worlds-within-worlds where anything is possible. I highly recommend this book to those who like coming-of-age stories, and also to anyone who has an appreciation for beautifully-rendered prose.
Rating: Summary: Engaging but flawed Review: I have to agree with one of the other reviewers and say that I was very disappointed upon reaching the end of this book. There was no resolution for Faith or the reader and it left me feeling frustrated. I was also let down by the discovery of Charlie's "secret" and its impact on Faith.Overall, this is a very engaging and interesting read and I do recommend it but it falls short at the end so be prepared.
Rating: Summary: A Tragic Lose - She's A Wonderful Writer Review: I loved "Wonder When You'll Miss Me" by Amanda Davis. I was heading to Amazon.com to write a rave review of this debut novel from a wonderfully clever and talented author who has a great career ahead of her. I was going to say how I was looking forward to next book. Sadly, there won't be another book. I was shocked and saddened to read that Ms. Davis was tragically killed (along with her parents) in a plane crash in March 2003. Luckily, we all had the opportunity to read this amazing book before her untimely death. Her characters are well rounded, deep and fully engaged. Her plot and story is well crafted and really interesting. I found her work really interesting and couldn't put it down. I loved it.
Rating: Summary: The Voice of the Fat Girl Review: I picked up this book, looked at the cover-ho hum, read the flyleaf-different, I thought. I could not decide whether to read it or not. There are too many books, so little time. So I decided to read the first page. I was immediately hooked. Ms Davis was a great storyteller. I could not wait to pick up this book between reading sessions. Her main character and second voice of the fat girl captured my heart. Anyone who has had something horrific or extremely sad knows about this special type of inner voice. Her presentation of the inner voice worked for me. I also enjoyed her details about life in the circus as well as work as a bus girl in a restaurant. I could tell Ms Davis researched her settings well (I doubted she had lived the life of a circus employee, but her depiction of life in the circus made me wonder if maybe she had). I particularly liked the ending of the book-no it was not tightly wrapped up. But one could think ahead as to how Faith's life might be (like endings in a French films). I knew there was a reason I had chosen this book, but I could not remember until I looked up Ms Davis' web site. I so liked this book that I was going to send her an email to tell her just that and beg more. When the web site came up, I remembered having read good things about the author in an obituary. I was so sad that this wonderful writer would not be giving us another book. Read this book; give it or recommend it to others. Let us all make sure Ms Davis is remembered. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put It Down Review: I read this book straight through--it's excellent. The circus is vividly portrayed and was obviously meticulously researched (apparently she even traveled with a circus); the author recommended books about the circus at the back of the novel, and I've already ordered one that she recommended. I've always liked bildungsromans, but this one transcends that genre. It's funny as well as achingly sad, and very literary. I'm crushed that there won't be more from Ms. Davis.
Rating: Summary: Unforgettable Review: I used Unforgettable as the title of my review because this one word is used on the cover of the movie Elephant which was an incredible movie just as this is an incredible book. I looked forward each night to read this book and to continue on with its journey which fasinated me the whole time. Some felt opposed to the ending of how some situations seemed unfinished but thats the whole idea really..her new found confidence clarified those situations and what would become of them. Wow..amazing book, amazing author (r.i.p) and I reccommend everyone of every type to read this remarkable book.
Rating: Summary: very dissappointing............. Review: I was expecting this to be a fantastic book after reading some of these reviews. I found this book to be a real struggle to get through. It started off quite well but soon became quite boring. There were still so many unresolved issues in Faith's life by the end of the book that it really left you hanging. It shocked me when she revealed that she had not told anyone about the Homecoming incident. I just don't think that is realistic after what she went through. I would not recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Faith Renewed Review: It is no accident that the main character in Wonder When You'll Miss Me is named Faith, as this is more than anything a book about faith. Having faith, losing faith, and finding faith once again. Though the book could be termed a coming of age story, it will appeal to readers of all ages. Reading it is definitely time well spent.
Rating: Summary: Great book, talented author that died too young. Review: It was a great book. Especially more so because of the tradgedy surrounding the author. Both she and her parents were on a press junket promoting the book when the plane her father was piloting crashed. The author and both her parents were killed. Just read the book, I dont need to say any more than that.
