Summary: I don't think you're ready
Review: This is the 2nd book I've read written by Donald Goines. This story is considered fiction, but like it's been said many times about this guy, he writes from experiences he's had, and the only way a story can be told this well is through experience. Some of the things in this book will leave you more than surprised, startled, angered, saddened, and then some. Every character in this story has something behind them and he is able to bring it out in a way only he can. If there is one word to sum up this story by Goines, it's REALISTIC.

Summary: Hard to put down!
Review: This is the first Donald Goines book I read. Actually, I read this book for my "Introduction to Urban Studies" class for extra credit. In our class, we were reading about the thriving African-American community that once existed in Detroit from around 1880 to the 1920's. "Dopefiend" vividly illustrates what happened in 1960-1970's Detroit as a result of Urban Renewal (UR) and disinvestment in the inner city. Sadly, it was not a trend limited to Detroit. It was a problem that affected inner cities nationwide. I recommend it to anyone (especially sociology, anthropology, psychology, and history majors out there!). Before reading this book, I thought dopefiends were disgusting. I didn't understand how they could do "that" (shoot up) to themselves. "Dopefiend" helped me understand the psychological, emotional, and physical journey that heroin addicts face. This book is fascinating, tragic, and hard to put down. I highly recommend it!

Summary: CLASSIC
Review: This is the second book by Donald Goines and I have to say that after this I am hooked. It took me only one day to read this book. I just could not put it down. I think it was a brilliant piece of work with vivid (sometimes disturbing) images that show the torture of heroin addiction to the reader in detail. For anybody thinking of getting involved with heroin even minutely I would recommend this book

Summary: In the head of a true dopefiend
Review: This was a very exciting book specifically because of it was told in the voice of a dopefiend and most other books that tell stories don't know what actually happens but this is a dopefiend and he knows what goes on and I just feel that it had a lot of insight and will help people understand more why people actually are pulled when pressured and how violence ties in to this lifestyle.

Summary: classic
Review: This was the first book of Mr.Goines I had the privilege of reading. When I read this book it took me home. I could see the streets he was on and the places he would describing because I had been there at one time or another. My dad was a dopefiend when I was growing up. Donald depicts the life...inside and out. I think everyone should read this book so that they might be able to see this world from a far...and prevent there loved ones from slipping into it. It's a lot worse when you can't put the book down because its real life.

Summary: Very Good!
Review: This was the very first Donald Goines book that I had read. I read this book in one day nonstop because it was so good that I couldn't put it down. In this book Goines get's to the bottom of the Ghetto dopefiends and what they would do just to get dope. And after they really don't have anymore veins left, how they would stick the dope into sore's just to get a hit, and things people will do just to get high. This book is great, I mean there's no other way to explain it, it would make you think twice before you might even think about trying dope.
