Rating: Summary: A Psychological Study on Human Nature and Growing Up Review: What I liked most about this book was that it explores and exemplifies social, philosophical, theological and psychological ideas through captivating characters and plot. I, along with probably almost every other reader, am now convinced that I posess "The Mark of Cain". This novel approaches universal teenage struggles of identity crisis and not-fitting-in through the bewildering protagonist, Sinclair. The ideas presented on biblical stories and God/Satan are fascinating, and the most disturbingly believable versions I've been exposed to. This book also introduced me to Nietchshe, whom before now I was never very interested in reading. Hesse never fails to keep me in an agitated state of wonder and confusion for weeks after reading one of his books. But, this one topped the others by raising not only questions on theology, philosopy, psychology, etc. but also about the story itself. Is Demian real? Is this book even more a study of psychology than I originally suspected by studying multi-personality along with identity crisis?

Rating: Summary: This is not Hesse at his best! Review: When Demian was first published in 1919 I can imagine that the book would have had a strong impact. In certain circles this novel still is a spiritual guide, but it certainly does not have the true literary excellence of Hesse's best works. There are some very good bits and pieces along the way, but the story is not sharp enough and it makes it seem to long. Hermann Hesse wrote books both before and after Demian that was far more superior and should not suffer from lack of interest in the belief that Demian is one of his major works.
Rating: Summary: A Jewel of German Thought Review: Ah yes, what can one say about this tiny, often unrecognized gem among the numerous works of Hermann Hesse? i read this about a year ago, and was captivated by its gripping story-telling and highly philosophical insight. After reading this, one may feel confused or even slightly depressed, as it raises more stinging questions than it gives illuminating answers, but that certain brand of mystical existentialism is common to Hesse's work, and indeed is its most memorable "feeling". Well, it is less dour than "Steppenwolf", though less inspiring than "Siddhartha"(naturally!), but in one sense it may be a great introduction to Herr Hesse's novels. i would recomend it for that purpose, as it is the shortest of the four works of his i've read (the fourth being "Narcissus and Goldmund", which does drag on..), and it really is rather good.

Rating: Summary: Question everything; believe nothing; Trust, in yourself! Review: This is the message that " Demian " inparts to its' readers, for it tells us to have the courage of our own convictions! The key point, though, is our making sure, that those very same convictions, are truely our own, first!!! Our own, Spiritual growth, is Will growth, and Emotional growth, combined with, our Mental Growth; and these, in turn, can only come from, ones' own, experiences and thoughts. This is our challenge and our duty, alone! Read this book!
