Rating: Summary: Wonderful Medical and Medieval Lore Review: Just after the last turn of the millenium, a young boy is orphaned in London. Raised by a travelling barber-surgeon, Rob J. decides to be a great physician. Problem: the best medical school is located in Persia. Problem: they don't much like Catholics in Persia. Solution: Rob J. masquerades as a Jew in order to attend the school. Through the seven or eight years he spends in Persia, Rob J. falls in love, gets married, has kids, gets some really great friends, meets up with the Shah, nearly gets killed, and discovers appendicitis. This book isn't gory despite its medical scenes, and is actually a really interested read if you like reading about long-time-agos or medical lore. Though most things I've read that have taken place that long ago are really difficult to read, this one wasn't.
Rating: Summary: Captivating Review: This book is captivating and almost edable... I enjoyed every chapter as a little kid enjoys candy! Gordon takes you back in time into such foreign (marvelous) places yet in a way that makes them feel so familiar... Cole's vocation is moving and so is his relationship with Mary... as to the feel for daily life in England, Persia, Scotland, and Jewish communities by year 1000.... wow! I wonder how much reasearch this guy went through for this book! Now I'm eager to complete the Saga with Shaman and Dr. Cole! Warning: If you work late hours you may not sleep for a week devouring this book!
Rating: Summary: a really really passionate book Review: Ok, I read this book like 2 times---with 2 years between each read. I like it better each time. It's great. You can totally feel his loneliness...maybe that is the motivation that drives him to be the physician that he's destined to be. I think that if you like adventures of different places set in times of old..then this book will be very enjoyable. Also, I like how multicultural the book is..it talks and revels in all kinds of culture, touching on gaelic with emphasis on jewish and arabic cultures...it's certainly an interesting, insightful read.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book ever read. Review: This book has so many characters and it's very clear who are the good ones. I felt with Aliena all the times and I was angry about William when he disturbed her life once again. This book shows you the real life of the midage and you can a liitle bit imagine whathas happend in these times.
Rating: Summary: Set into another world Review: Actually I wasn't really fond of reading this book, when a friend of mine told me of it. By now I've read it twice and even though I've read it before, again it was simply great. When the end was near, I felt so sorry that I couldn't get to know more about Robert Jeremy Cole and his wife Marry (Cullen) Cole. I think I'm gonna read it for the third time too. And I'm sure, I won't need more than four days to read those 700 wonderful sites again.
Rating: Summary: A very good and amusing book, and interesting story. Review: I liked The Physician very much. The characters were very interesting, the ambientation of the medieval ages and different cultures, also. I liked Cole very much and was very interested in the book. What I found disappointing was that, after reading it and being anxious to see how his life in Persia (while studying) would be, and how his life in Europe would be after his return (after having studied) maybe his reencounter with Mary, etc., I found that the next book (SHAMAN) did not cover this part. So it was a very good book that lacked a continuation or a good end. That really disappointed me as the real saga did not exist!!! It lacks a naturall continuation!
Rating: Summary: Simply Captivating Review: A wonderful look into the beginings of the Cole family dynasty, as well as breathtaking insight into 11th century history and medicine.
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK!!! Review: I read the german translation of the book and can HIGHLY recommend this to anyone in any language. Very good!
