Rating: Summary: Tim has topped himself! Review: Serge, Coleman, Sharon--innocents from the midwest-plus just a few other players. I do not know how he does it but Tim gets better and better every book. I really am at a loss for words; when I am laughing by the first page I know I've got a good one. First Florida Roadkill, then Hammerhead, then Orange Crush and now Triggerfish-I already want the next one. I do not feel the need to explain the characters. Tim Dorsey has outdone Hiassen by a long shot. He is the "Florida Writer" in my opinion. Let's all hope the next one isn't to far away. Star
Rating: Summary: "So it begins in Tampa...." Review: This is one of the funniest novels ever written. The story of Tampa's newest residents, the Davenports from Indiana, is a classic modern American fable. Dorsey exhibited comic genius in his first two novels although I found the plots slightly meandering. The third, Orange Crush, was well-plotted but perhaps not quite as hilarious. In Triggerfish, Dorsey has perfectly balanced all the elements. Perfectly plotted, pithy satire, easy to read but hard to put down. I'm a writer in the Tampa Bay area myself, and I guess I'll have to stick to the gritty hard-crime stuff, because Dorsey is the king of Tampa Bay comedy-satire. I'D GIVE ANYTHING TO HAVE WRITTEN THIS. Read Dorsey now, the guy's still young and he's got a lot of comedy left in him. Excellent work, Tim, esp. the "jaws of the apocalypse" thing.
Rating: Summary: Triggerfish Twist Review: Serge A. Storms is by far the most hillarious character ever written! Tim Dorsey takes you on the ride of your life through the lives of the most disfunctional people on the planet! I laughed so hard, I cried.
Rating: Summary: this one starts to turn me off from tim dorsey Review: this is a messy and pointless novel. simply could not finish it.
very messy and random, and the plot is kinda boring. well, i've had enough of this serge character and would like turn to hiassen again and never look back.
Rating: Summary: Tim Dorsey Meets Quentin Tarantino Review: This whole series of books by Tim Dorsey can be described as a twisted and funny study on the dark side in all of human beings. Tim Dorsey manages to take everyday situations and make them incredibly funny. Based in Florida, the series follows the twisted life of Serge Storms (one of the best characters ever created) and all his sick, violent and disturbed adventures. Of course, along the way you will get to meet every kind of character you can imagine.
The interesting thing about this series is that behind all the funny stories, there are tons of social and political criticisms. I have read all the books in the series, and each one keeps getting better. If you are a fan of Quentin Tarantino movies, or South Park cartoons, you will love these books. A must buy.
Rating: Summary: Reading for the fun of it at its best Review: Dorsey is loads of fun, like Hiaasen and others who write the wacky Florida mysteries. I enjoy reading them when I need a breather from more demanding reading. His books go down like cotton candy, light and sweet, and highly aerated.
This zany work introduces a dizzying array of characters -- all misdirected or misused, drugged or crazed -- who collide with one another and form unlikely alliances. The plot leads them to a climax beyond any you've read, one that generates more fireworks than you'll see in the biggest July 4th bashes. Keeping people straight can be tricky at times, since they all spin out of control, careening toward their explosive rendezvous.
This is satire raised to absurdity. You'll smile, you'll laugh, you'll love it for what it is, entertaining escapism.
But ... let's be judicious and discriminating with our ratings, please. A book, like a movie, can be great fun without being great art. This is an example. For this reason, I cannot in good faith give this 5 stars when I've given a finely written, fully realized, and well-developed work such as REMEMBERING BLUE by Connie May Fowler 4 stars.
This is a hoot of a good book, for easy and hilarious entertainment.
Rating: Summary: triggerfish Review: Triggerfish Twist was not my usual 'type' of book to purchase. It was the most hysterical and entertaining book I have ever read. Since then, I have not only read it several more times, I have purchased every book I can find of Tim Dorsey's. It is not a book for the subject-sensitive reader but it will make you laugh and smile.
Rating: Summary: Another fun read from Dorsey... Review: A "South Florida" novel about a guy who transfers to Tampa with his company, and starts meeting all sorts of strange Florida neighbors who are nut cases. He finally ends up killing someone inadvertantly, and the dead man's brothers start to come after him. And there are so many other strange subplots that all meet up at the end. Very funny, but very weird...
Rating: Summary: Twisted! Review: Its twisted, but so good! Its scary that the main character is so appealing, but he is! Can't wait for a new one by Tim Dorsey!
Rating: Summary: Tampa Truisms Review: This was a heck of a funny book. I really enjoyed reading about the Tampa people and the actual Tampa locations mentioned in the book. The book must be true as it is so accurate on the types of people found in Tampa. The book is written in a Dave Barry type of writing (also a Floridian). The situations of the strange neighbors had me in stitches and all the strange goings-ons all culminated in a way that was unpredictable. It was dark humor but if you like Monty Python situations, you will love this book. Serge was definitely my favorite character with his violent personality but basically a good neighbor to Jim. All Floridians - especially those in Tampa - must read this book.
