Rating: Summary: Back Roads...Great BOOK! Review: This was a great book, I couldn't put it down! Yes the ending was intense, but the book was awesome and there was a lot of humor mixed in! READ IT!
Rating: Summary: Big disappointment Review: I really expected to like this book as it started off with vivid descriptions of locales and characters. But it slowly and inexorably descended into a mixture of foul dialogue, foul situations, and some not-to-be-believed character interactions. The climax and ending are totally depressing and left me with a bad taste in my mouth. This book is headed for the trash.
Rating: Summary: Back Roads Review: Great book! It kept me intersted from cover to cover. I hated to put it down, and was so sorry when I finishes reading it. I am looking forward to more books by Tawni O'Dell.
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: Tawni ODells first novel is exceptional. Dylan Baker reads the audio (you know - hes the guy from "Happiness") - and he really makes the writing comes alive. I cant wait to see what comes next from Tawni ODell. Definitely a writer to watch - and definitely an audio to listen to
Rating: Summary: BACKROADS - an absolute page-turner! Review: BACKROADS is absolutely a MUST-READ! A very well-written novel! Right when you think you know where the plot is heading, it takes another twist which totally catches you by surprise! I simply could not put it down! O'DELL keeps the pages turning by allowing you to so easily become involved in Harley's life and all the mystery, suspense, romance, laughter, intrigue, and heartbreak that evolves around him and his dysfunctinal family, friends, and acquaintances. You will not figure out this ending until you read the very last page! Looking forward to reading O'DELL's next novel.
Rating: Summary: BACK ROADS BY TAWNI O'DELL Review: THIS IS A WONDERFUL STORY! SHE KEEPS THE READER INTERESTED FROM BEGINING TO END. JUST AS THE READER THINKS THAT THE PLOT HAS BEEN UNCOVERED, MS. O'DELL MANAGES A NEW TWIST. UNBELIEVABLE! SHE BRINGS ALL HER CHARACTERS TO LIFE. I CANNOT WAIT FOR HER NEXT NOVEL.
Rating: Summary: Back Roads is gripping! Review: I read this amidst the chaos and activity of a household with young children, and miraculously managed to finish it in two sittings. Back Roads is not just a gripping story, it is also beautifully written, and the character is completely engaging. The author has captured an endearingly honest (and humorous) voice in Harley. To put the book down felt like hanging up on a friend in need, so I had to keep reading. I look forward to more works by the author.
Rating: Summary: Gripping Review: I bought this book without knowing a thing about it. When I saw the "oprah" selection on it, I almost took it back... I wasn't interested in a smarmy, uplifting book. I was looking for something snappy and a bit dark. After reading one page though I knew I had made the right decision. The book was gripping, I couldn't stop once I started, but I didn't want it to end. It was brilliant, and oh so painful to read. You just want to go into the book and help those kids in some way, yet you know their world is so ugly and so intimate, there would be no room for strangers. Three cheers to Tawni O'Dell on this book, and to her publishers for putting it out. I recommend this book highly, but only to people who can deal with the harsh, ugly realities of life. This isn't a book for kids. And it isn't a book for light reading. I finished the book several weeks ago, and still have to pick it up to read the ending over and over because I couldn't remember it. The entire story is what sticks in your mind, not the outcome.
Rating: Summary: Not for young readers... Review: I have worked with Emotionally Disturbed teenagers as an English teacher for 10 years. In that time, I have heard stories of abuse that are so disturbing I thought nothing could shock me. This book shocked me. I didn't know what I was getting into when I picked it up. The back and cover are very misleading. I feel, after reading this, that I know now exactly what Holden Caufield was trying to protect kids from. Many times during reading this book I thought of putting it down and not finishing it. It was written in such a way, though, that I felt compelled to finish it. In fact, I read the last 100 pages in one sitting. I am warning the faint of heart, the weak of stomach, the prudes out there who don't want to hear about things that make people uncomfortable: Don't buy this book. For the rest of you, be open-minded, read it, and think about ways to make this world a better, safer place for those who need it most.
Rating: Summary: Excellent story writing at its Best - Must Read Review: Back Roads -- by Tawni O'Dell - one of the best books I've ever read. I read without putting it down in three hours! A first-time book for this author, completely compelling, intelligent writing, mesmerizing and heart-wrenching. Definitely one of my top ten books I've ever read. I didn't want to put it down. It compares to "Memoriors of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden, "I Know This Much is True" by Wally Lamb, "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood: A Novel" by Rebecca Wells; "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb, and "When It Rains" by Marjorie Spoto and "The Davinci Code" by Dan Brown.. A Must Read.
