Rating: Summary: gimme a break...this sucks Review: This is an AWFUL book. Had a bad beginning, middle, and end. I didn't have the highest of expectations to begin with, but it was just BAD. Im not even talking about morality or anything, its just very poorly written. Its a very flat plot, not a lot of interesting things in there- just weird random things that dont seem to lead anywhere. The characters are lacking in all places. Reading the back of the book would make you think that its -at least- a halfway decent novel, but its TERRIBLE. It took me nearly a month to finish reading this it was so bad. Don't buy it. It had me wretching.
Rating: Summary: It wasn't THAT great. Review: Now I know why more and more writing contests and submission guidelines are demanding characters other than writers. What a self-absorbed story this is. It doesn't completely suck, but it's about a sorry ass writer, and frankly I'm sick of reading about writers too. It just tells me that the author has done nothing else with his life but trying to become a successful author. And he's bitter about not making it. Well...have your friends ever heard of this book? The prose itself is thoughtful, but the story moves a little slow. I love reading about NYC, but this one did not draw me in. I only picked it up because I saw it at a bookstore and I admit, was drawn in by the title, not because I had heard good things about it. I think the description on the back of the book over-hyped it a little.
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: Nersesian's first novel is still his best. This book is a raw, madcap, sometimes goofy -- but always fun -- story of a perpetual screw-up who can't catch a break to save his life. Sound familiar? This novel also offers the best tour of downtown New York City since Richard Perez's The Losers' Club. Of all of Nersesian's books, I prefer this one the best. It's a hilarious diamond in the rough. I guarantee you'll be entertained. Also recommended: Dogrun, The Losers' Club by Richard Perez, Post Office by Charles Bukowski
Rating: Summary: Horrible Review: This is a book for the very depressed. I would've enjoyed it, had it not been too prolonged and drawn out. It took forever to read, and was not worth the four hours in the middle of the night, frantically thinking the end was near. You will think, wow, I am so glad not to be him. Basically, his girlfriend dumps him, he looses his job cause he asked for a raise, this girl who wont have sex with him he later sees grinding wiht some 40-year old guy in a club, his friend dies, he gets brutally beat-up, loses his home, has to pretend hes gay so he can work in this porno theater, then he runs into this girl and they have sex and she says he raped her, and the police are after him. It is a horrible novel. I loved The Perks of Being a Wallflower and was severley disappointed by this, which amazon recommended as a related item.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Ouch. I picked this up due to the title alone, having never heard of this book before. In my opinion the narration was too restrictive; the story was told in the same fashion it would be told verbally to a casual acquaintance, only scratching the surface of the main characters' personal motives, doubts, fears, and many of the aspects that make a character compelling. Too much text was used describing what happened, as opposed to why and how. I thought it came off very flat, and, as the reviewer from Library Journal said, bland.
Rating: Summary: Read this book. Review: Read it. Let your friends borrow it. This is a good read for high school kids. It is about his guy who goes from having a decent job, and a decent girl friend to a street walker who is digging in trash cans for his next meal, then starts his climb back to humanity. Believe me, it will make you realize how good life really is for you.
Rating: Summary: Just ... GREAT! Review: It's a great book. I wasn't sure whether the ending would satisfy me even two pages before because it seemed like there wouldn't be enough space to tie up the loose ends but Mr. Nersesian did it with much style and grace! I'm glad to know that in a world of screw ups that something good can come. "Like a cockroach on water, I had floated on my spindly arms and legs in the giant toilet bowl of New York." The last line of the book runs a close second to the one above for the best line of the book only because it shows that happiness can simply be being content with what you have! Don't let the title keep you away! It's such a great book!
Rating: Summary: a forced read Review: a forced read that i thought would be better cant say more
Rating: Summary: True to it's title Review: I loved this book. Although, many will disagree! I thought it was hilarious! Nersesian is a clever writer. The book sucked me in and left me laughing. His character didn't disappoint his title! I would recommend this book to anyone with a strong stomach!
Rating: Summary: Interesting Review: Definitely an interesting read. I disagree with some of the reviews that found this a forced read. I didn't find the latter situations the "hero" fell into predictable at all. Think of it as a "worst-case" scenario slacker model for the mid/late 80's. I know a few people like this guy, of course there situations aren't as extreme...yet. Overall, it was interesting, humorous, and a bit sad. A modern tragedy.
