Rating: Summary: Finally a good book! Review: I have been really disappointed in several books amazon recommended, I was getting stuck in a rut! But your Oasis pulled me out of the rut and into the Oasis. Though there were turbentlant times it wasn't depressing. I couldn't put it down. If my boss only knew what I did while sitting on hold.
Rating: Summary: Emotional, affecting study of 2 families facing adversity Review: I liked Lorna Landvik's first book, "Patty Jane's House of Curl," but "Your Oasis on Flame Lake" is even better. BiDi and Dev have been friends since high school; now they are married, with kids, and still living in their small Minnesota hometown. "Your Oasis" tells of the crises each faces within the short frame of a year or so: infidelity, a violent attack on BiDi's daughter, an addiction to pills, and more (I don't want to spoil the plot). There's a lot packed into the book, but Landvik skillfully shows the emotional impact of these events on both families. Landvik states in the reader's guide (at the back of the book) that she considers this a more thoughtful and less emotion-driven book than "Patty Jane"; but I think "Your Oasis" also benefits from its contemporary setting and the more compressed time period ("Patty Jane" takes place over a much longer period of years). The characters are believable and very real, like people you know. The dialogue is particularly well-done and rings true. Once you get a few pages in, it's a hard book to put down: smart, funny, touching "chick lit" that is a refreshing change from the urban professional scene of the post-Bridget-Jones genre.

Rating: Summary: Mixed reviews Review: I loved Patty Jane's House of Curl, but was disappointed by Your Oasis. I found the five voices used to tell the story to be contrived. The voices were so similar that I found myself having to look back to see who was speaking. There were a couple of good plot twists and there is potential here. The book couldn't offend many or depress anyone, but it didn't provoke much emotional reaction either. Read Patty Jane's House of Curl instead!
Rating: Summary: Great depth of characters Review: I picked this up for a book group and was delighted. I have not yet read Patty Jane's House of Curl but definitely will after this warm and genuine book. The story line is sparse but the characters draw you into the story. I loved the Sergio character and especially appreciated how each character spoke from their own unique perspective. I didn't want the book to end. An excellent read that I would highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: If you liked Patty Jane's House of Curl, you'll love this! Review: I read Patty Jane's House of Curl about a year ago, then pick up Your Oasis on Flame Lake. Landvik has a different character speaking in each chapter. It is very interesting, because as the story progresses, you are hearing it from a different point of view. Landvik did a great job capturing the characters personalities. I loved it.
Rating: Summary: Fun ! Review: I read the book and also listened to the audiotape. I enjoyed both. I've circulated them around my office: one person didn't like the book at all (too hard to follow the characters, she said) but loved the audiotape. I liked the different format. I have a (minimum) 40-minute drive to work and the audiotape made the drive time fly by. Lorna Landvik did a great job reading, I thought. The book had a bit more substance, and having additional background on the characters fleshed them out better in the book than the tapes. I don't care for fiction writers that take themselves too seriously, while writing unbelievable characters: THIS BOOK IS NOT THAT AT ALL. It's a lot of fun and really enjoyable!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful characters and story. Review: I read Your Oasis on Flame Lake about six months ago and have since given it as a gift to several people. Everyone has loved it. I can't wait for Lorna Landvik's next book.
Rating: Summary: Landvik just keeps getting better! Review: I really really REALLY liked this book. Lorna Landvik is incredibly funny and talented and this book is her monument. I loved her quirky and endearing characters, especially Dick and Darcy--they cracked me up! YOUR OASIS was a better read for me than PATTY JANE, although the latter was a great book as well. I can't wait for her next release in September. I will be the first in line.
Rating: Summary: CHARMING BUT HARD TO FOLLOW Review: I tried to get into the lives of these people but found the book rather choppy and hard to follow .I liked Patty Janes house of curl much better
